It's no secret that Big G's tight with the federal government, whether it's White House staff hanging out on Google +, or the company giving us all a personal tour of Obama's abode. This time around, though, Larry Page & Co. have announced a partnership with the GOP which makes Mountain View the official social platform and livestream provider of the upcoming Republican National Convention. Essentially, this means Republicans at the gathering will use sites like YouTube and Google+ to stream live events and pop in at the occasional Hangout. That said, it wouldn't surprise us if attendees dabbled in that other social network, as it's no stranger to politics, either. Too bad Santorum's not around to try on those snorkeling goggles...

Why are we doing all of this??Student loan debt in the U.S. recently surpassed $1 trillion, and the average student loan debt is $25,000.?We know it?s an issue affecting many of you?and many of us.

To inspire you, below LearnVest Senior Editor Laura Shin writes about how she finally paid off her student loan.

In May of 2008, I graduated from journalism school with a master of arts, new friends from around the world ? and a decade?s worth of student loan debt.

I was lucky in that my student loan was, due to a hefty scholarship, ?just? $20,500. I was lucky in that my parents paid for my much more expensive undergraduate education and that they paid my living expenses while I was in grad school. I was lucky in many ways, but in one way I was deeply unlucky: I had somehow managed to reach my mid-30s without having a clue how to manage my finances.

My journey to the final loan payment I made in February was filled with so much fear, shame and, above all, anxiety, that when my colleagues at LearnVest suggested I write this piece, I didn?t want to.

I didn?t want the world to know that I?d spent the first two years of the loan payments in a fog of confusion about how to get rid of this debt, or that I?d racked up almost $8,000 in credit card debt, and I had to pay that off too, or that the way I got rid of the debt was by freakishly and obsessively tracking how I spent every dollar. I didn?t want to reveal these things to future editors or to people in the well-to-do, achievement-oriented?communities in which I grew up.

But given how many ways I went wrong on my way to becoming debt-free, I thought my own tale of ?how I did it??that is, paid off more than $20,000 in student loan debt within three-and-a-half years?could help LearnVesters and the 37 million Americans with student loan debt get there too.

How I Made a Mess of My Finances

My predicament had nothing to do with bad parenting: My sister, who was raised by the same people, has always handled money well.?Purely because of my here-and-now personality, until about two years ago, my basic philosophy toward money was, ?Have it, spend it.? I also had no concept of a separation between ?I want that? and ?I?ll get that.?

As recently as April 2010, I didn?t have a savings account. When I was in college, I remember that my bank told me to get a savings and a checking account, but I never fully understood why savings even existed since, if you actually wanted to use the money, you needed to take it from checking. So when I got my first job in New York, I opened only a checking account and put ?all? my money in there. I put ?all? in quotes because I lived paycheck to paycheck, not thinking there might be a time when money wouldn?t come every two weeks.

So in spring 2010, two years after graduating, I had a good job and made good money for a writer, but I was digging myself a credit card hole that would, by September, reach $7,500. (The culprits: Gilt Groupe and New York City boutique shopping, a three-week trip to India, constant dinners and drinks out with friends,?my book addiction?and God knows what else.)

See why I hesitated to tell you?and the world?what a money mess I was? But if someone as far gone as I was can pull her finances together, then so can you.

When Things Started to Turn Around

In April 2010, when I was $6,500 in credit card debt and $18,432 in student loan debt, I read?an article in The New York Times?about female-focused personal finance sites. (That was how I got hooked on LearnVest, long before I worked here.) In September, after my trip to India, I took a personal finance workshop, where I learned about this fabulous tool. It was called a budget.

It worked just like the?LearnVest Budgeting Tool. You take your monthly income, subtract your monthly expenses such as rent, utilities, etc. Then you do this magical thing: You put some money in savings and keep it there to watch it grow. Next, you make a payment toward your debt or, in my case, payments since I had the student loan and credit cards. As for the rest? That?s what you live on.

I figured out that, depending on how fast I wanted to pay my loan and amass savings, I had to live on between $190 and $240 per week. In cash.?

Planning My Spending

I immediately stopped all credit card spending except for items I could only buy online. I unsubscribed from Gilt. I stopped getting drinks almost every night. I stopped buying every single thing that looked good at the grocery and the farmers? market (I love to cook) and instead started planning out my meals so I only bought what I needed for that week.?I even started looking up restaurant menus online and choosing my meal before going out so I knew how much I would spend.

In essence, I started ?planning? all my spending.

This is how it worked: I took out the amount I had to spend that week from the ATM, and if I had to buy something with my credit card online, I immediately returned that same amount in cash back to my checking account. I started a Google spreadsheet that tracked every single dollar I spent so if I spent over my limit one week, I knew how much less to spend the next. Similarly, if I underspent one week, then the following week, I knew my how much bigger my budget was.

The sheet also tracked money I hadn?t even spent yet: As soon as I made plans for the next week or the next month, I would mark on that future day a dollar estimate of how much that activity might cost, i.e. ?Birthday dinner, $50,? so that when I got to that week, I already knew I had that much less for other spending.?It also kept me, when the night finally arrived, from being tempted?to have another drink I hadn?t planned on.

How My Financial Picture?and Life?Started to Change

Not everyone in debt may need to be as obsessive as I was, but since I was trying to undo more than a decade-long habit of buying myself whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, I needed to be hyper-vigilant.

I am not going to lie: Living on this budget had an impact on my social life. But I had fallen in with an international crowd at grad school, so coincidentally, at the same time I was trying to go out less, the last of my grad school friends moved back to their home countries, so my social life naturally became less active.

I had already made some balance transfers so my credit card debt was no longer accruing interest, but for one card, the 0% period was going to end in January 2011, and I didn?t think I would be able to pay it off by then. I was getting heart palpitations just thinking about interest growing on my already sizable debt.

That Christmas, I got a gift from my parents?several thousand dollars they said I should put toward my student loan debt. I?m sorry, Mom and Dad, but the truth is, I used it to help pay off that credit card. (As I type this, tears actually spring up because it really hurts me to tell the world that I lied to them.)

But thanks to that gift and the five months I had spent being really diligent about my budget, by February 2011, I was free of my credit card debt. I had even saved enough money to take a trip to Mexico with 15 of my grad school friends.

Finally Paying It Off

I began to use plastic again, but I stuck to my weekly budget?and I ramped up the student loan payments. By this point, my student loan debt was just over $15,000.?

Around the same time, I got a new job?at LearnVest?and increased my freelance income with a new regular writing gig. (Increasing your income, whether through a raise or side income, is an under-sung way of helping pay down debt.)

I also started learning more about personal finance, and realizing, not only did I need to pay off my debt, I needed to build an emergency fund.?A CFP I worked with counseled me not to worry about my student loan since the interest rate was a ?low? 6.8%. She suggested I stop the loan payments, build my emergency cushion, then pay the loan off.

I tried and watched with pride as my emergency fund grew. But I felt dismay every time I looked at the student loan balance. Before meeting with her, the debt had fallen below $10,000, but by the time winter arrived, the interest, which accrued every day, pushed it above $10,000. Again.

Over Christmas, I made a decision: When I got my bonus in late January, I immediately sent a payment in the same amount to the lender. Then I took a massive amount out of my savings account, essentially decimating it. The February day it hit my checking account, I quietly logged onto the student loan website while at work and made my final payment.

But I?d been so traumatized by the experience of seeing the interest increase my debt on a daily basis, I still didn?t quite believe it. It wasn?t until a full month passed and I received a paper letter from the lender showing that I owed nothing, that I finally?finally?breathed a full sigh of relief.

The big inconvenience is that the tank that holds the compressed natural gas takes up a lot of room; even your whole trunk! And there may not be places to refuel on a road trip from Ft. Collins.

Plug-in electric vehicles are now available in our Ft. Collins area. Battery technology is the limiting factor right now. Electric cars have a limited range and are really best for use close to home. As battery technology advances, electric cars will perform closer and closer to conventional power plants.

That brings us to hybrids. There are a bunch of hybrids on our Ft. Collins roads, with more to come. Hybrid technology combines internal combustion engines with electric motors.

A mild hybrid has a regular gas or diesel engine that?s assisted by the electric motor. The electric motor can propel the vehicle by itself up to a certain speed under gentle acceleration. There are mild hybrids in full-sized pickups and SUVs. They deliver city fuel economy similar to their highway ratings.

A full hybrid will rely primarily on the electric motor for power. It?ll have a small gas or diesel engine that generates electricity for the batteries.

Processes at the surface of catalysts: Using infrared spectroscopy, scientists detect that oxygen defects act as active centers

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? In chemical industry, heterogeneous catalysis is of crucial importance to the manufacture of basic or fine chemicals, in catalytic converters of exhaust gas, or for the chemical storage of solar energy. Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum (RUB) have developed a new infrared spectroscopy method in order to study processes at surfaces of oxides used as catalysts.

Their results are published in the Angewandte Chemie journal.

Catalysts support many chemical reactions. In heterogeneous catalysis, the substance used as a catalyst and the reacting substances exist in various phases. Usually, the catalyst is a solid, while the reacting substances are gaseous. At the surface of catalytically active solids, highly complex chemical processes take place. They have to be understood in detail in order to further improve products and reduce costs. The processes are known well for metals. However, conversions at the surface of oxides ? compounds of metals or nonmetals with oxygen ? have hardly been studied so far.

The research team of Professor Christof W?ll from KIT and Professor Martin Muhler from RUB first studied processes at surfaces of oxide monocrystals and then transferred the findings to powders, the technically most important form of oxide materials. Doing this, they were the first to bridge the gap between fundamental research into reference systems and applied research into real catalysts. A newly developed combination device for infrared spectroscopy (IR) allows for highly precise measurements of the vibration frequency of carbon monoxide. The exact value of this vibration frequency is highly sensitive to defects.
?
Such defects result from the removal of individual oxygen atoms from oxide materials. ?Oxygen defects act as active centers and give the material a high catalytic activity,? explains Professor Christof W?ll, Director of the Institute of Functional Interfaces (IFG) of KIT. With the new combination device for infrared spectroscopy, the researchers from Karlsruhe and Bochum developed a method that was first calibrated for reference systems. For the first time, they then measured defect densities of real catalyst powders using a high-performance FTIR spectrometer made by Bruker Optics (VERTEX series).

To demonstrate their new method, the researchers used rutile, the most important modification of titanium dioxide (TiO₂). ?This material used as white pigment and in photocatalysis normally is chemically highly inert and rendered catalytically active by the oxygen defects only,? explains Professor Christof W?ll. Professor Martin Muhler from RUB points out that such defects in powder materials have only been detected indirectly so far.

With their method, the researchers, including Dr. Mingchun Xu, Dr. Heshmat Noei, and Dr. Yuemin Wang from RUB as well as Dr. Karin Fink from the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) of KIT, followed the ?Surface Science? approach developed by the Noble Prize laureate Gerhard Ertl. They demonstrated the potential of their method by studying the carbon-carbon coupling reaction of formaldehyde to ethylene. Doing this, it was confirmed that the density of oxygen defects at the surface of r-TiO₂ nanoparticles is of decisive im-portance to the catalytic activity of the oxide powder and, hence, to the yield.?

The Silent Hill series may have taken a dip in narrative quality since its heyday on the PlayStation 2, but fans of Konami's early survival horror efforts can relive those glory days with the $39.99 Silent Hill Collection, which brings Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 into the high-definition era. These two genre classics (available for both the PS3 and Xbox 360) receive the 720p treatment, but do the games in this mini-compilation hold up after a decade of gameplay innovation? In some areas, yes; in others, no.

Entering Town
It wouldn't be wise to spoil these games, so I will not. After all, the Silent Hill games?the early ones, at least?are known for their dark, mysterious tales. But it's worth giving a general overview of the storylines so you can roughly understand what the games are about. Silent Hill 2 focuses on James Sunderland, a man who ventures into the mysterious town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife?his dead wife?asking him to meet her there in their "special place." Silent Hill 3 follows Heather, a teenage girl pulled into the town's madness. Both stories serve up some genuinely creepy moments that will stick with you long after you've powered down your consoles.

As these games are HD (720p) upgrades and not full-on remakes, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 feature the original games' positive and negative elements. The titles feature the rich, psychological (and psycho-sexual) horror that defined the series, as well as slow, clunky combat and an overreliance on fog in outdoor areas to mask the game engine's slow building, car, and creature rendering.

Something's Amiss
Even if you can go along heavy fog effect as creating atmosphere, there's no excuse for the slowdown that occurs when multiple monsters appear on screen. Silent Hill 2's more claustrophobic locales make this less of an issue as there are fewer characters on screen, but Silent Hill 3's more open environments allow for more simultaneous enemies?and more slowdown.

On a positive note, the re-recorded voice work is light years better than the original's, but purists have the option of going without the original voice tracks. Speaking of audio, both games feature outstanding moody music that assists in setting the fright-filled mood. You will, however, have to learn to ignore James Sunderland's heavy breathing, which occurs when he tuckers himself out after strenuous activity. It sounds like a monster breathing down your neck, so it may prove distracting when you first venture into town. Heather, thankfully, doesn't have this issue.

Peering Through The Fog
Silent Hill HD Collection is, naturally, a package for series diehards, but also for gamers who want to experience a side of the survival horror genre that doesn't involve armed-to-the-teeth agents who can lay waste to zombies with military-grade weaponry (I'm looking at you, Resident Evil). Silent Hill HD Collection has its issues, but they aren't ones that will stave off anyone who loved the games the first time around. Newcomers may want to try the Silent Hill HD Collection before buying.

One week after Yahoo announced that it would lay off 2,000 employees, the company has now confirmed the second part of its restructuring: a reorganization that puts the company's assets into three new business units -- consumer, regions and technology, with at least one operation put to the side for a potential sale. Facebook to buy Instagram for $1 billion

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook will pay $1 billion in cash and stock for Instagram, a 2-year-old photo-sharing application developer, in its largest-ever acquisition just months before the No. 1 social media website is expected to go public.

The price was stunning for an apps-maker without any significant revenue, even when measured by the lofty standards of Silicon Valley, where startup valuations have soared in recent years. It highlights the rising stakes in the social networking market in which services such as Facebook need to constantly excite consumers with new features and mobile applications.

By acquiring Instagram - in a deal announced days after the startup closed a funding round that valued it at $500 million - Facebook may also have sought to absorb a potential rival or at least prevent it from falling into the hands of a major competitor like Twitter or Google Inc.

"Anytime you see a social platform that's growing that quickly, that's got to be cause to be nervous," said Paul Buchheit, a partner at the start-up incubator program Y Combinator and a co-founder of FriendFeed, which Facebook acquired in 2009.

"It would be better to have bought Twitter at this stage," he said of Facebook. "So if you're thinking this could be the next Twitter, it could be a smart thing to do."

The Instagram application, which allows users to add filters and effects to pictures taken on their iPhone and Android devices and to share those photos with their friends, has gained about 30 million users since it launched in January 2011.

Instagram says that as of the end of 2011, its users had uploaded some 400 million photos or about 60 pix per second, suggesting the sort of activity that Facebook seeks as it tries to wring revenue from mobile devices. Instagram launched its Android app just last week, garnering more than one million downloads already.

As Instagram's popularity has shot up in recent months, the company's leadership has mulled possible strategies to expand the service into a fully featured social network - much like a photo-driven, stripped-down version of Facebook, Twitter, or even Path, a company insider said.

Instagram is "a property that would have been amazingly valuable to not just Facebook, certainly Twitter was in the hunt as well," said Lou Kerner, founder of the Social Internet Fund.

"I'm sure Google was interested as well. So to some degree an acquisition like this is both offensive and defensive. It would be a highly leveragable asset for anybody who wanted to compete against Facebook."

Instagram, with roughly a dozen employees based in San Francisco, closed a $50 million funding round last week from investors including Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners, according to a source familiar with the matter. The funding valued the company, founded in early 2010, at $500 million, it said.

Facebook, which is expected to raise $5 billion via the largest Silicon Valley initial public offering by May, will acquire Instagram's entire team.

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

The deal, a closely kept secret at the tiny start-up, is expected to close this quarter. CEO Kevin Systrom announced the transaction to Instagram employees at a 9 a.m. meeting on Monday, according to the source inside Instagram.

TAKING PAGE FROM GOOGLE'S BOOK

The acquisition marks an exception in strategy for Facebook, which has traditionally bought small companies as a means of hiring coveted teams of engineers. Facebook typically discontinues the acquired company's products or builds similar versions that it integrates into its service.

Instagram, however, will not only remain running, but Facebook will build features into it as time goes by, both companies said.

Tech industry insiders were quick to draw parallels with Google's $1.65 billion acquisition of video service YouTube in 2006. YouTube retains its own offices in San Bruno, California, and largely operates independently of Google.

"Facebook is acquiring a similar company in that it's fast growing, doesn't have revenue or a business model, but has become part of the online culture," said Gartner analyst Ray Valdes.

"I would wager that almost everyone is also a Facebook user, so it's not like they're expanding their market," Valdes said of Facebook. "What they're buying is traction, they're buying engagement, they're buying brand value."

Facebook, the world's No. 1 social network with more than 845 million users, is facing increasing competition. Last year, search giant Google launched Google+, a rival service that offers many of the features available on Facebook.

With its purchase, Facebook said it would continue to develop Instagram as an independent app that remains compatible with other social networking services.

Some tech industry observers noted that deal may dramatically ramp up the valuations on other fast-growing social media companies and app-makers - such as Pinterest - as entrenched Web players seek to snap up attractive assets and bolster their social capabilities to challenge Facebook.

"It will be interesting because if Facebook has to keep buying up the hot new social network, that could get expensive after a while," said Y Combinator's Buchheit.
