'RHOBH's' Adrienne Maloof, Paul Nassif split

Updated at 1:30 p.m. PT:?Another broken "Housewives" household.

As suspected, "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' "?Paul Nassif has filed for legal separation from wife Adrienne Maloof. The plastic surgeon and hotel mogul have been married for nine years and share three young sons, Gavin and twins Colin and Christian.

PHOTOS: Housewives splits

Filing the documents in an L.A. County Superior Court Monday morning, Nassif told TMZ : "The welfare of our children is my primary focus as Adrienne and I work through this difficult time. I want the best for her and our children and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy away from the cameras."

Friction between the couple was never exactly a secret to fans, as their sometimes uncomfortable bickering was a common focus on the Bravo hit. "There is a lot of anger and frustration. It's all the stuff you saw on TV," a family friend of the couple tells Us Weekly. "They fight constantly."

Adds the friend: "It was a very volatile relationship. But they are trying to keep it civil for the sake of the kids."

Original story: Adrienne Maloof is stepping out on her own. After nine years of marriage and three sons together, the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star and husband Paul Nassif are splitting.

After TMZ reported that plastic surgeon Massif plans to file for legal separation this week, hotel mogul Maloof told Radaronline: "I'm so sorry that this is happening, but my children are my life, and sometimes we need to do what's best for them."

On the first two seasons of Bravo's smash reality show, Maloof and Nassif bickered -- seemingly good-naturedly -- on camera.

PHOTOS: Most shocking "RHOBH" bombshells

Their young sons Gavin and twins Colin and Christian were rarely seen on-camera for the show, costarring Kim and Kyle Richards, Lisa VanderPump, Camille Grammer, Taylor Armstrong and Brandi Glanville.

"It's an unfortunate situation, but I have to have my kids' best interest at heart," Maloof added.

PHOTOS: Biggest reality TV breakups ever

It's not the first marriage to disintegrate on "RHOBH." The end of both Grammer and Armstrong's marriages also played out during the show; tragically, Russell Armstrong took his own life in August 2011.

Health Law's Insurance Rebates, Exchanges And Mandates ...

News outlets report on a variety of health law implementation policies, including state-level action.

NPR: Affordable Care Act's Insurance Rebates In The Mail
Robert Siegel talks with Julie Rovner about an immediate effect of the new health care law ? rebate checks ? how they vary, and why some insurers owe Americans money (Rovner and Siegel, 7/27).

CQ HealthBeat: On Exchanges: This Summer The Policy Community Is Sweating Implementation Details
It was not everything they wanted to know about health insurance exchanges, but it was a lot. With deadlines looming, audience members at a standing-room-only Capitol Hill forum Friday peppered federal and state officials with dozens of questions about the nitty gritty of creating the new insurance marketplaces. And they got answers. For example, it now appears that a proposed rule for the "essential health benefits" that must be offered by plans sold in exchanges will come out in August (Reichard, 7/27).

The Washington Post: Health Insurance Mandate Faces Huge Resistance In Oklahoma
The Supreme Court may have declared that the government can order Americans to get health insurance, but that doesn't mean they're going to sign up. Nowhere is that more evident than Oklahoma, a conservative state with an independent streak and a disdain for the strong arm of government. The state cannot even get residents to comply with car insurance laws; roughly a quarter of the drivers here lack it, one of the highest rates in the country (Somashekhar, 7/29).

Arizona Republic:? Health-Care Act To Have Tax Impact
Several key tax rules are scheduled to change in 2013, especially for higher-income individuals.? Republicans are still trying to overturn the law, and that could happen based on what transpires in the November election. But if nothing changes, here's what to expect in terms of the health-related tax impact, with focus on items that apply to individuals rather than businesses (Wiles, 7/28)

CT Mirror:? Connecticut's Health Exchange Board Determines Basic Coverage
Connecticut's health insurance exchange board has selected a mandatory benefit plan that many state residents will choose for coverage that is more generous than the federal Affordable Care Act requires.? The plan will offer abortion services, although people receiving federal help to buy health insurance will have to pay for pregnancy termination coverage out of pocket.? That plan would be the minimum health insurance companies will be able to offer when the largest phase of the Affordable Care Act is implemented in 2014.? The exchange board members decided to model the "benchmark" plan on a ConnectiCare HMO that provides coverage for thousands of state residents (Radelat, 7/27).

Acting Green vs. Buying Green

The following is a guest post from Jaclyn at eLocal.com.

As we work to enhance the health of our environment, there are two options to consider: do you act green or buy green in your home?

For example, you can shorten the length of your shower or use fewer lights ? or you can just update your appliance to low-flow, energy efficient appliances. By updating the products in your home, you do not have to change your lifestyle.

This infographic compares the two choices.

5278576347 d5ca50c831 Getting To Know The Key Essentials Of Home Improvement Financing

Jumping into home improvement projects can be very exciting. You get to increase the comfort of your home while at the same time making it more marketable. Some projects even lead to massive savings in the long run, who would not want to be part of such? Then why is it that not all homeowners have joined in the bandwagon to do their own home improvement? I think we all know the answer to that; finances.

Home improvement projects can be quite costly, running up to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the type of project undertaken. Most homeowners cannot afford that, and thus feel like home improvement is not for them. Well the good news is that there are options available for financing your home improvement project but you ought to know some essential things first.

?

?

Paying in cash is best

If you are lucky enough to have some savings stashed away somewhere, then that is your best bet for financing your project. Cash is simple to use and is a once-and-for-all deal. If you use cash, you do not need to worry about paying back the principal amount, leave alone the ever-increasing interest rates.

You can also put the fear of having your home repossessed firmly behind you. It may pinch when you see your savings reduce right before you, but if you made wise choices in your home improvement project, you ought to be able to regain that amount and more in the due course of time.

Next best option?

Your next best option if you just do not have that amount of money would be to get a personal loan. Get it from a family member or a very close friend and you will find that it is a flexible option. These will allow you to pay back slowly, without any exorbitant interest rates or the threat of foreclosure of your home.

Of course, this is a delicate balance because most of the time where friendship is mixed with money there are disastrous consequences, but if you have good family members/friends and you stick to your end of the bargain, it should work out alright.

?

Other options

There are many loans offered for the homeowner who wants to carry out improvement projects, but perhaps the best is a home equity loan. This allows you to borrow against your house?s equity, that is, the amount remaining when you deduct the remaining mortgage from the house value. The amount of money you borrow is fixed, great for financing a once-in-a-lifetime project. The interest rate is also fixed, so you can rest easy even when interest rates are skyrocketing. Your home will be repossessed if you cannot pay back though.

Another option is the home equity line of credit. This is quite like the home equity loan in that you borrow against the value of your home equity, but in this case, the money you get is not one fixed amount. You are allowed to make several withdrawals until you hit a particular set limit. This makes it a great option for those projects that take quite some time and require regular payments to be made. Beware though, just like the home equity loan, you risk foreclosure if you are in default of payments. The interest that is paid on this loan and the home equity loan is tax deductible.

The government might also offer financing for improvements on property, but such loans are usually of a fixed amount and do not cover luxury improvement projects such as adding a whirlpool to your bathroom. There are some governments, which also finance their citizens in their quest to create more energy-friendly homes. Make sure to do your research to find out whether this option is available to you.

Last word of advice

Unless you are completely sure, do not take a loan from your contractor. They are known to charge notoriously high interest rates. You might not see it at first glance but too many homeowners have had to keep up with some hidden costs that they had not seen. Be careful as you undertake your home improvement, the last thing you want is to lose your home. Contact your solicitor wherever you are not sure.

Drought may mean fewer, smaller animals at fairs

State and county fairs in the sweltering and drought-stricken Midwest may see some skinnier pigs and smaller squash this year.

The dozen pigs Greg Marzahl and his 15-year-old daughter are bringing to the Wisconsin State Fair are smaller than those he'd normally show. Marzahl, who had three grand champion pigs last year, said his pigs are around about 15 pounds smaller than the normal 275 pounds. The heat is affecting their virility and appetites, he said.

"We've had a hard time getting them to eat enough to get that condition on them," said Marzahl, who has about 35 show pigs and a few lambs on his 160-acre farm in Oxford.

The Wisconsin fair opens its 11-day run Thursday in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis. State fairs also are set to begin in the next two weeks in Indiana, Iowa and Illinois, which also have been hit hard this summer by unusual heat and drought.

Marzahl still plans to bring his pigs to the fair, expecting his competition will have smaller animals too.

That's been the case at some county fairs that already have been held in the state.

David Laatsch, an agriculture agent with the University of Wisconsin Extension, said he's judge several poultry contests for county fairs this summer and has seen fewer exhibitors and smaller animals. The heat also causes narrower and fewer feathers on poultry, he said.

Laatsch thought some potential exhibitors might have decided to leave their dairy cows home because they were already stressed. Heat disrupts cows' reproductive cycles, and their milk production goes down, he said.

Liana Glavin, secretary of the Adams County Fair Board, has three teenage daughters involved in 4-H. They will bring some of their 12 cows to the county fair this year but leave a mother and her calf behind because of the stress of the heat.

Other exhibitors aren't even coming, she said, although she didn't immediately have figures.

Glavin said the pasture on her farm in Arkdale is completely dried up, when normally the cows can eat until October. Prices for feed have skyrocketed, and Glavin said she doesn't know how much longer she can afford to keep her farm if the prices stay high and the drought continues.

"It's scary but at the same time it's sad," she said. "My kids bought their cows for a 4-H project. We've had the cows for seven years. When you only have 12 of them you are more attached to them."

Astrid Newenhouse, an agriculture scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, judged vegetables and flowers for ages 8 to 18 at this year's Dane County fair, which ended July 22. She said entries were down by about two-thirds.

"I have never seen the drought like that before, this severe before," said Newenhouse, who has judged for 23 years.

The fair had just one gladiola. Typically, it has about two dozen. She said lilies were smaller and not as colorful and all of the vegetables were smaller.

Most years when she asks children to describe their projects, they usually say what they liked best about the plant.

This year, "the first thing they mentioned was how much they watered them," Newenhouse said.

What're On the web Paid Reviews, and Do Online Paid Surveys Really

The truth is that the opinion counts, and businesses want to know what you believe. Usually you sign up with one of these marketing and research organizations as panelists that supply surveys focused to your demographic, geographic area and more specific traits that they are looking for. When signing up as a new panelist you will usually have to complete a form and provide some general information that will help the marketing organization determine if you are a good match for a specific study. The best part is that once the organization has your page the surveys will normally only deliver you surveys via email that you can answer and complete easily. The common time needed to complete a particular study depends on several things, certainly one of which is the power to type. The faster that you are able to sort obviously the faster you?ll be able to perform each survey.Another thing to keep yourself updated of is that there are a whole lot of scam websites out there claiming to be legitimate questionnaire internet sites that you could make money on and they are merely a terrible scam trying to get you to invest your time on them, and they will pay you nothing. There are a great deal of respected companies though. One caution is that you get what you pay for, and while you could have to pay a little money to get an to date and real listing of recent survey companies it is well worth not having to discover the hard way doing work without the reward.Typically the survey achievement time takes somewhere between 15-30 minutes and they will generally pay between $50-$80 for you doing a survey. You can also visit the Job Centre Online for more information how you can start making money online by getting a trustworthy organization that works together proper marketing and research companies to get you started today.

Top Ten Tips to Remember in Choosing the Right Pest Control ...

Are you having problems with ants, roaches, moths, ticks, termites, and fleas' infestation? The bigger issue when you have these pests at home is that they can bring harmful diseases to your family. If you are in Islington and are looking for professional help, here are some tips to consider in choosing the right pest control Islington company.

1.)Locate a licensed N1 pest control company. Make sure the firm you are dealing with has passed all necessary requirements to operate in this kind of business.

2.)You can find a contractor through print ads, referrals, and the Internet. The best way to find a contractor is by means of referral. At least through referral, you know someone who can attest the efficiency of the company. However, if you do not have referrals, you can always rely on good old print ads or the more high tech Internet to help you search.

3.)Once you have found contacts from the pest control Islington company, it is time to call their representative and ask for their licensing status and insurance. See to it that the company has coverage for operator errors such as damaging any property or staining your carpet.

4.)Once you have talked to the representative, it is time to verify their authenticity. Check with the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau to verify if the company is registered. At the same time, check if there were complaints filed against them in the past. 5.)Another way of making sure you are dealing with an efficient pest control contractor is to ask for referrals from the company. Those who are confident about their previous contracts will be proud to give you names and contact numbers from previous clients who agreed to do referrals in behalf of the company. Check with the referral if the contractor finished their job satisfactorily.

6.)Make sure you know about the coverage that the company is providing. This means you have to find out if they are handling year-round services or only service calls.

7.)Find out how much they charge for their services. Remember that each contractor has varied coverage for their services.

8.)Make a deal with the company and observe how they perform for the first couple of days.

9.)Notice how the agent handles business. Is the agent always on time? Is the agent dressed presentably during visits? Is the agent professional enough?

10.)Finally, take time in considering which N1 pest control company to deal with. Make sure you go through the contract thoroughly and that you agree on everything before you sign for it. Remember that the main priority is the safety of your family and the people living close to you.

If you need a pest control Islington contractor that can deal with your pest problems efficiently, visit our site for more information. We provide extensive information and recommendations about N1 pest control techniques we can do to solve pest infestations in your business or home.

Young Stranger: 750

Seven hundred fifty is the number of gay men and lesbians who reported having spiritual experiences in which they were reassured by their Heavenly Father that their gayness was a good and intrinsic part of who they are.? This was 47% of a sample of 1600 respondents to an in-depth survey that covered information about early perceptions of sexual difference, sexual identity formation, efforts to cope with sexual orientation, and the role of faith in all of this.? Preliminary findings from the survey were presented by John Dehlin and Bill Bradshaw at this year's Sunstone Symposium.

That number made me feel much less alone.? I had a very powerful (and unexpected) experience of this nature in 1986 (as I've described in my spiritual autobiography).? For many years, I was the only person I knew who had had such an experience.? Gradually, over the years, I read of or encountered others who shared experiences of a similar nature.? I've encountered these types of stories often enough to realize that they are not uncommon.? Still, 47% out of a group of 1600 gay men and lesbians seemed like an astonishing number to me.

Any reckoning of the ultimate significance of this number, however, needs to account for the fact that 16% of survey respondents reported receiving spiritual confirmation that God rejected their homosexuality.? The apparent conflict highlights the challenges of validating spiritual experiences and evaluating them in a broad context.

The other reported data I found interesting had to do with respondents' reported levels of happiness and quality of life.? This is the first time I've seen the different relationship configurations of gay men and lesbians evaluated in this way.? Single or celibate gay men and lesbians reported the least happiness.? Gay men and lesbians in mixed orientation marriages reported the next lowest levels of happiness.? Gay men and lesbians in some sort of committed relationship reported quality of life slightly less than average, healthy heterosexual married individuals.? Gay men and lesbians who were legally married reported levels of happiness comparable to or even slightly higher than healthy, married heterosexuals.

What I thought noteworthy about this is the fact that while, on average, gay or lesbian individuals in mixed orientation marriages reported lower quality of life than gay or lesbian individuals in committed same-sex relationships or in same-sex marriages (or, for that matter, married heterosexual individuals), they were still happier than single/celibate gays and lesbians.? This is logical, when one considers the fact that needs for human touch and companionship will be fulfilled even in a less than ideal marital relationship.

This data confirms the observation that the Church's recent emphasis on celibacy as the only acceptable option for gay and lesbian individuals is unlikely to deter individuals from entering into mixed orientation marriages.? Since the Church's emphasis on singleness/celibacy for gays and lesbians effectively consigns them to the most stressful and unhappy life status, no one should wonder why, if gay individuals don't opt for a mixed orientation marriage, the vast majority eventually end up leaving the Church if a same-sex relationship is an option.

I think these data also beg the question: If singles (gay and straight) are the most unhappy of these demographic groups, how have we as a Church/society failed singles?? These are the individuals that demand our most serious and immediate attention.? What can we do to address this problem?? Are our families, Churches and social groups structured in such a way as to create or exacerbate the unhappiness measured in this survey?? And if so, what do we need to do to change that?

Finally, these data speak to the question of why legal relationship recognition in the form of full marriage equality matters.? Based on the data that was presented, it's impossible to know conclusively why legally married same-sex couples reported higher levels of happiness than same-sex couples who were only in extra-legal committed relationships.? Is it because commitment in the form of marriage offered a greater sense of security and stability in the relationship?? Is it because gay couples who are legally married are more likely to live in states where society treats them as equals?? Whatever the case, it seems to me that any commonwealth that claims to be concerned about the well being of all its citizens, needs to consider the impact that denying marriage rights will have on the health and well being of its gay citizens.

Parenthetically, it's worth considering the implications of this data about quality of life and happiness for religious beliefs about homosexuality.? Religious opponents of same-sex relationships have always argued that a lifetime of diminished happiness is a small price to pay for exaltation in eternity.? Regardless of what the data say, in other words, we still have to wrestle with larger questions about the meaning of suffering, and the relationship between holiness and happiness.

I think it's worth noting that I did experience an increase in personal happiness after I found and made a commitment to my life partner, G?ran.? However, I feel like my level of happiness in life increased even more dramatically after I opened myself up to wrestling with what my testimony of the Gospel and of the LDS Church meant to me as a gay man, and after I started attending Church and applying Gospel principles to my life.? Our decision to get legally married and the personal satisfaction I've derived from getting married are connected to my faith.? In other words, I am happy to the extent I am able to live a life of integrity and wholeness -- in my relationship with my husband, as well as in my relationship with God and with my community of faith.

None of the data presented by Bro. Dehlin and Bro. Bradshaw free us of the responsibility of wrestling with difficult questions.? Data never just speak for themselves.? All the same, it is helpful to have data.? With or without the data, we still have to wrestle with the questions of meaning.? But it is better to wrestle with these questions in the presence of good data, than with no data or bad data.? I've personally wrestled with a lot of these questions, and I've for the most part found resolutions to the most troubling questions, and Bro. Dehlin's and Bro. Bradshaw's data offered me some helpful perspectives on my own experience.

US team expects tough challenge in chase for gold

LONDON (AP) ? It's go time for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team. It's gold time.

The challenging exhibition schedule is over, marching in the opening ceremony is already a memory and the Olympic flame is burning brightly.

"We're ready," said coach Mike Krzyzewski.

They'd better be. Don't expect any opponents asking for photographs or autographs ? there are teams here that feel they can beat the Americans.

Although heavily favored to win the 12-nation tournament and capture gold just as they did four years ago in Beijing, the superstar-studded U.S. squad will face a talented field loaded with NBA players.

On Sunday, the U.S. opens pool play against France, an experienced squad led by San Antonio guard Tony Parker, who nearly missed the London Games because of a serious eye injury. Parker's ability to break down defenses and create in the open floor could pose an early problem for the Americans. And he's not the only headache for the U.S. as France's roster includes Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, Kevin Seraphin and Nando de Colo ? all currently on NBA rosters.

"It's a big test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said, lacing up his sneakers Saturday before practice at East London University. "We're going up against guys that we normally play on a night-to-night basis, and those countries have put them all together just like we have. And at the end of the day their main goal is to beat the United States.

"There's going to be some good battles."

France will only be the first. This isn't going to be some easy sightseeing stroll along the Thames for the American team before stepping onto the gold-medal stand. Spain, Argentina and Brazil are all talented enough to not only compete with the U.S., but potentially upset the world's No. 1 team.

That wasn't the case four years ago, when the U.S. steamrolled through the field, winning by at least 20 points in each of its first seven games before beating Spain 118-107 in the final. Krzyzewski, who guided the 2008 "Redeem Team" to gold, believes a potential road to gold could have some dangerous bumps.

"The overall 12 teams are more talented, more seasoned," he said. "Spain is just in the prime of their ? 28, 29 (years of age). Brazil is in that wheelhouse. I think Russia's really, really good. Obviously Argentina, everyone says they're older but their heart and talent has not gotten older, It's just gotten better.

"There's just more teams that feel that they have a chance to win the gold medal ? and medal ? than they did in '08."

Count the French among them. They finished second to Spain at last year's European Championships, and maintain they won't be intimidated by the U.S. team's collection of All-Stars, MVPs and household names. France's players have no intention of being posterized on a dunk by LeBron James or Kobe Bryant the way 7-foot-2 countryman Frederic Weis was famously embarrassed by a soaring Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games.

France, 0-4 against the U.S. in Olympic competition, isn't frightened.

"For us there is no fear factor because we play against them all the time," said Parker, who will wear goggles to protect his surgically repaired left eye. "We know they are really, really good. But it's not going to be like the other teams where they don't see them and it's like, 'Oh, wow, I'm playing against Kobe and LeBron.'"

Bryant likened France's offense to the one Parker runs with the Spurs. Everything starts with the ball in Parker's hands, so the U.S. team's challenge will be to make him give it up.

"Slow him down and surround him," Bryant said. "Keep bodies in front of him at all times."

This U.S. team, comprised of five holdovers from the '08 squad, five from the 2010 world championship team and two newcomers, was loose and relaxed before Saturday's workout, a final tune-up before beginning the five-game preliminary round. Durant and Anthony playfully horsed around in the foul lane and Bryant smiled amusingly as photographers jockeyed for position like paparazzi trying to record his every move.

The mood will be decidedly different Sunday.

That's when everything change. That's when it matters.

"Everybody expects us to win gold," James said. "And that's what we're here for. Nothing else."

In recent days, Bryant, James and the other U.S. players have been careful not to get trapped into making comparisons to the Dream Team. Bryant recently caused a stir by saying the 2012 Olympians could beat the 1992 version that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Jordan called Bryant's comments "not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

For now, the talk has quieted, the comparisons can wait. For this American team to be regarded among the others before them, there can only be one medal.

"The legacy will be determined if you win the gold or you don't," Krzyzewski said. "We're not talking about legacy everyday but it is. We're here to win a gold medal, and if we do less than that, then it will be a big loss for us."

Chinese Firm That Nailed Apple for $60 Mil Sued by Its Own Lawyers

I distinctly remember marveling that a bankrupt Chinese company dragging around at least $400 million in debt owed to Chinese banks was able to afford lawyers to sue Apple when it lodged a short-lived suit against Apple in America.

Well, according to a Google translation of a Chinese-language story in Sina Tech, Grandall, the Chinese law firm, was fronting Proview Shenzhen's expenses and now it's suing Proview in China for a piece of the $60 million Apple agreed to pay to get clear ownership of the iPad trademark in China that Proview contested. Apple, of course, claimed it had already paid for the privilege.

Grandall wants the $2.4 million Proview promised or 4% of the $60 million that the Chinese court overseeing the negotiation ordered deposited in a special account to pay the banks. Proview reportedly refuses to pay the bill, calls the Grandall suit "a nonsense," and recants its alleged agreement because it's broke.

Apple released its latest iPad in China last Friday because of the settlement. China is Apple's second-largest market.

(AP) ? Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display earlier in the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Remote camera mounts replace AFP photographers at Olympic Games

AFP photographers kit out robots for the Olympic games with Nikon D4s

Remember those robotic camera rigs Reuters cooked up for the Olympic games? They won't be alone -- the AFP have lined the games with their own remote mounts. Traditionally, aerial shots are captured by brave, well harnessed photographers -- but the AFP's acrobatic photojournalists have been grounded by the powers that be. "The Olympics Committee has warned us that, for security reasons, no photographer will be allowed on the stadium roof," stated the AFP's chief editor of technical issues, Francois-Xavier Marit. "We had to come up with a system of remote-controlled photography." Marit worked with Nikon and Mark Roberts Motion Control to build a dozen rigs to pepper throughout Olympic facilities. It's not Marit's first time kitting out the games either -- he's been using remote camera rigs to snap underwater Olympians since 2004. Each mount is equipped with a Nikon D4 and 16 to 400mm zooms, ten will be mounted in the main Olympic stadium with an additional two covering the swimming complex. Worried you won't be able to see the hardware from the bleachers? Mosey on past the break for a quick preview.

Google rolls out fibre optics for gigabit internet

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

rexfeatures_1476282a.jpg

They sure love speed in Kansas City (Image: KeystoneUSA-ZUMA/Rex Features)

Google has launched its own internet service provider with connections so fast you could download an HD movie in the time it takes to read this sentence, it claims. Google Fiber will offer download speeds of 1 gigabit per second, around 100 times faster than the average US internet connection.

The service will launch in Kansas City, which saw off more than 1100 other communities that had applied to be the first with gigabit internet when Google first announced its plans in 2010. Data will be delivered via Google's own fibre-optic network, which the company is laying down as residents in areas of Kansas City dubbed "fiberhoods" sign up.

Google is offering three flavours of fibre. The top package, which also includes a 2-terabyte TV box capable of recording up to eight programmes simultaneously and the new Nexus?7 tablet as a remote, costs $120 per month, though it lacks popular channels such as HBO, AMC and ESPN. Gigabit internet alone is $70 per month, and there is also a 5-megabit service with no monthly fee - you just have to pay a one-off $300 to get fibre laid to your home.

The fibre connection is actually so fast that users will need a wired home network to take full advantage of it, as even the best Wi-Fi networks top out at around 300 megabits, a third of the speed Google is offering.

Google Fiber isn't the world's first gigabit internet project. That prize goes to South Korea, where five cities are wired up to the nation's pilot gigabit project - and the government wants every household to enjoy such ultrafast speeds by the end of the year.

Goal Achievement - Olympic Show And Tell! | The Great Gordino

July 27th 2012, and it was the Olympic Opening Ceremony. My brother was in the cast, so that?s the show I want to focus on, and the goal achievement lessons it tells us?
goal achievement The Great Gordino
The show could certainly be described as an extravaganza, and it was also quirkily British, or should that be Britishly quirky?

In sport and entertainment, long time readers will know I love to go behind the scenes, focus on the people who are maybe not slap bang in the spotlight. So, my brother Glen being in the Opening Ceremony screamed out for me to write about it!

The picture above is of my brother with director Danny Boyle, I?m sure Boyle is thinking ?how many of these fecking eejits do I have to have a picture with?? but according to Glen he was always accommodating.

Glen has loved the Olympics longer than I have (because he?s older!) so when he saw the chance to audition for the show, he took it. It was several rounds of auditions too, not just one.

Then, once in the show, it was committing to getting to rehearsals, and hour after hour of them. Day after day, he had to sort things around him being at the rehearsals, all on public transport around a very full time job.

Then as the show approached, he asked me if I wanted to go to a dress rehearsal at the stadium ? naturally I did, so it was a thrill to be able to watch him in the stadium.

July 27th ? showtime! Glen?s slot lasted around 10 minutes as he strutted his stuff around a bed in the section celebrating the NHS. All that effort, time, work, commitment, led to a wonderful evening of enjoyment.

I would say it?s something to stay long in the memory, but in fact for him it will stay in the memory full stop!
London 2012 Opening Ceremony
This is a snap from the BBC coverage, even though he sings like a woman and screams like a little girl, neither of these are Glen. It does show the segment he was in though.

Scroll back up though, and take a closer look at the photo at the top of Glen and Danny. The goal achievement lessons are not hard to spot in Glen?s case ? spot a goal you want, take action towards it, put in the work, and get there. Look behind him though?

Look at some of the other performers. There were over 10,000 of them in total, and *all* of them did the same as Glen. They all have their individual stories of arranging their lives to manage the requirements of being in the show.

Many different routes to being in the same place at the same time.

So, think of the fireworks yes, think of the spectacle of such a mass of performers yes, but then think of the individuals involved ? your goal may or may not to be in the Brazil 2016 Ceremony, but whatever your goal is, think how you apply the lessons from London 2012.

Let me know what you think! Leave a comment, or like, share, tweet and so on ? I love the feedback!

(AP) ? Great Britain is a kingdom made for a horse.

Every morning, the dust of Rotten Row, a sweeping dirt path in London's Hyde Park, rises from the patter of cascading hooves. Venerable steeds from the queen's military regiments are practicing so they can glitter at Royal Weddings carrying uniformed riders wearing shiny tasseled helmets.

Then there are horses that support the Household Cavalry's massive drums. Achilles and Mercury are not only known by name, but hold the rank of major when on parade. How can you not love that?

While it's often said that Britons are very good at seated sports ? think rowing and cycling ? this is shaping up to be the year of the horse at the London Olympics. Among the highest profiles are the queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips, who is competing for Britain in three-day eventing and a horse co-owned by Ann Romney, the wife of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, which is set to take part in the dressage competition.

British eventing team competitor Mary King hopes the high visibility of the British riders at the London Olympics will encourage more people to take up riding throughout the country.

"We hope this will get more bums back in the saddle," said King, a decorated Olympian competing in her sixth games.

First and foremost in this calculation is Phillips, the 31-year old daughter of Princess Anne who won a berth on the British Olympic equestrian team after a series of blistering performances on the country's rain slogged courses this year. Phillips, the 14th in line to the British throne, will draw cameras from around the world to the equestrian venue at Greenwich.

Being royal and on a horse at the Olympics is a dead certain combo to win media attention. And if that weren't enough, her very famous relatives might be spotted in the grandstand ? cousin Prince William and his photogenic wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Phillips competes in three-day eventing, a grueling sport that combines the disciplines of dressage, show jumping and cross country. She rides High Kingdom, a 16.2 hands high (5-foot-6-inch) bay gelding.

And then there's Rafalca, the 15-year-old mare owned by Ann Romney, being ridden by Jan Ebeling of the U.S. dressage team.

The Romney/Rafalca duo has proved to be a godsend to Republican critics. American comedian Stephen Colbert has lampooned dressage and its image as the sport of the well-to-do ? but at least he noticed it. Rafalca has also been a gift to American equestrian writers, who suddenly find dressage on Page One, rather than in the stats section of the Olympic roundup.

Princess Haya, the head of the international equestrian federation, FEI, told the AP in an email that her sport has more than just outstanding athletes and horses.

"What makes equestrian sport truly exceptional however is not the participation of athletes who may be famous by virtue of their status; it is the magic that is created by the perfect harmony of horse and rider," she wrote. "Horses do not understand titles or connections. ... Equestrian sport is one where men and women, the young and the not so young, the disabled and the able-bodied compete together, and where the horse is the great equalizer.'

But will young people flock to the stables, hoping to ride like Zara? Will the little girls who ride ponies in Hyde Park ? helmets strapped around the chin, boots tucked into stirrups ? become big girls who chase medals at the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and beyond?

Not necessarily, says Stephen Greyser, a Harvard University professor who has long studied the games.

Greyser said while there's plenty of evidence to suggest that non-famous people who rocket to the fore at the Olympics sometimes make others interested in their sport, but there's little evidence it works the other way around.

He cited the example of snowboarder Shaun White, aka the "Flying Tomato," who secured back-to-back Olympic gold medals in halfpipe and drew people to the sport because of his fluid grace on the snow, quite aside from the shock of long red hair.

But Greyser said the media is attracted to celebrity, not necessarily their sport.

"I think a famous person has an opportunity to draw attention, but not necessarily to turn an entire sport into something more popular," he said.

Still, half the lenses on the planet will probably be turned on Phillips rather soon.

"But that's more a media thing," he said.

Explorers find sunken German U-boat off Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ? Divers have discovered a World War II-era German submarine nearly 70 years after it sank under withering U.S. attack in waters off Nantucket.

The U-550 was found Monday by a privately funded group organized by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani. It was the second trip in two years to the site by the team, some of whom had been searching for the lost U-boat for two decades.

Using side-scan sonar, the seven-man team located the wreck listing to its side in deep water about 70 miles south of Nantucket.

Sonar operator Garry Kozak said he spotted the 252-foot submarine during the second of an exhausting two days of searching. Kozak said the team asked him if they'd found it, then erupted in joy without a word from him.

"They could see it with the grin (on my face) and the look in my eyes," Kozak said.

On April 16, 1944, the U-550 torpedoed the gasoline tanker SS Pan Pennsylvania, which had lagged behind its protective convoy as it set out with 140,000 barrels of gasoline for Great Britain, according to the U.S. Coast Guard website and research by Mazraani.

The U-boat slipped under the doomed tanker to hide. But one of the tanker's three escorts, the USS Joyce, saw it on sonar and severely damaged it by dropping depth charges.

The Germans, forced to surface, manned their deck guns while another escort vessel, the USS Gandy, returned fire and rammed the U-boat. The third escort, the USS Peterson, then hit the U-boat with two more depth charges. The crew abandoned the submarine, but not before setting off explosions to scuttle it. The submarine hadn't been seen again until Monday.

The U-550 is one of several World War II-era German U-boats that have been discovered off the U.S. coast, but it's the only one that sank in that area, Mazraani said. He said it's been tough to find largely because military positioning of the battle was imprecise, and searchers had only a general idea where the submarine was when it sank. Kozak noted that the site is far offshore and has only limited windows of good weather.

The team towed a side-scan sonar vessel in a mow-the-lawn pattern over the search area and found the U-550 after covering 100 square miles of ocean, between the trip this year and last year, Kozak said.

Just the nose of U-boat was visible on sonar on the first pass, but the team was delirious after the second pass, when the sonar image made it obvious they'd found it, Mazraani said. Quick dives to the wreck to beat bad weather confirmed the find with pictures.

The other team members were Steve Gatto, Tom Packer, Brad Sheard, Eric Takakjian and Anthony Tedsechi.

Mazraani is cagey about the vessel's precise location, saying only that it's in deep water. Mazraani's said his best estimate was that the team spent thousands of dollars of its own money on the expedition. He joked that no one on the team, whose members range in age from the mid-20s to mid-50s, stands to make money from the find unless someone writes a book.

Mazraani said the next step is to contact any sailors or their families from the escort vessels, the tanker and the German U-boat to share the news and show the pictures. Another trip to the site is coming, he said, adding the investigation has just started.

"The history behind it all is really what drives us," Mazraani said.
