A New Jersey man who skipped town after he was accused of bilking money from nuns was captured in Las Vegas on Monday, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.
In November, Adriano Sotomayor, 54, was indicted by federal prosecutors on 13 counts of mail fraud. He allegedly scammed more than $439,000 from the Dominican Sisters of the Rosary of Fatima and others between May 2009 and June 2011 through a bogus will scheme, according to the FBI.
The Dominican Sisters of the Rosary of Fatima operates out of Puerto Rico and has members in cities in the Philadelphia-South Jersey area.
Sotomayor allegedly persuaded an elderly nun that she had been named?a beneficiary in a will of an estate estimated at $2.1 million, the indictment said.
He reportedly was able to lure the nun by telling her the man notifying her of the will was a priest, and the person leaving the will was a parishioner.
Sotomayor, according to prosecutors, induced the nun to send him $255,379 from May 30, 2009 to February 4, 2010 by telling her she needed to pay taxes and other fees associated with the bogus will.
He also allegedly targeted other victims as well with a similar scam. Some of the money was sent by wire transfers to Atlantic City casinos, according to prosecutors.

I have yet to find a comprehensive list of gifts for writers. ?Sure there are holiday lists and occasional valuable articles, but I?m hoping to gather a list of the tools and products that you can advise others to gift to you or that, should you be so inclined (as I am), you could gift yourself?products that will actually help you become a better writer.

The Worthy:? What?s worthy about this product is that it actually works as advertised! ?I have found this to be an amazing tool since purchasing it around the holiday season. ?I do most of my writing in word processors, but I frequently need to move away from the keyboard and plot out my ideas with pen and paper. ?The problem is that I often lose the paper where I write my notes, or I have so many notebooks going that I can?t remember where I put some notes. ?This pen solves that problem by transferring all of my writing to a free piece of software that makes digital versions of my LiveScribe notebook pages. ?I can then put all of my handwritten notes into an easily locatable folder on my computer.
Additionally, sometimes I need to think aloud about the notes I?m taking down, or talk it through with a friend. ?Having the ability to record what I don?t necessarily need to write down is great. ?So, let?s say a friend is critiquing my writing in person (or a creative writing group is meeting for a critique of my work), I can record their comments while taking notes and then sync up my notes to what they actually said, should I be confused later on. ?This is an incredibly valuable tool?and the audio sync really does work.
There are other uses for the pen too that are quite magical. ?You can push some buttons on the pen, draw a piano keyboard, and start playing the piano on your paper, for example! ?Not the most useful thing for me, but quite intriguing.
The Not Worthy: ?The only major caveat I would suggest is that to ensure that your notes can be transferred to the computer software, you need to make sure that you write hard when you write your notes. ?My normal way of writing ended up with an unsuccessful transfer on my first go around, and once I made sure to press down more forcefully when writing the next time, it worked fine. ?It?s a bit annoying, especially if you just don?t write that way, but I?ve found that it?s a flaw that easily outweighs the benefits.
Trend Setting:?This part of the review asks what is, to me, the fundamental question of any product review:?will this be something I buy and use twice or will it change the way I write? ? For me, I certainly don?t use this to draft my stories?because I don?t draft by hand, but it has seriously changed the way I take notes during planning time. ?The brain sometimes needs the freedom of the page that a notebook offers?something my computer screen and MS Word can?t provide. ?This product blends the ability to handwrite something with the ability to easily and securely keep your work on your computer.
Final Thoughts:?If I was asking for a gift as a writer, this would be towards the top of my list. ?It?s useful, fun, and it actually functions as advertised. ?You will likely need to purchase additional ink and notebook paper soon after buying the pen, but they aren?t too expensive and will definitely be used. ?As a writing tool, you can?t do much better than this product.

The first horses in North America would not have been able to hold their own in the Triple Crown. At just about 5.6 kilograms the Sifrhippus sandrae hoofed onto the scene some 56 million years ago about the size of a small dog.
But then a funny thing happened. In the next 130,000 years during the Paleocene?Eocene Thermal Maximum, these small equines got even smaller, reaching the tiny size of 3.9 kilograms?some 30 percent lighter than their initial heft. Just 45,000 years later, however, the genus had bulked up to seven kilograms. And the horses were not the only ones. Many other mammals in the area followed the same pattern.
These animals' sizes likely resulted from relatively rapid climate change, suggest the authors of a new study published online Thursday in Science.
The study "highlights the importance of temperature on evolution?particularly mammal evolution," says Felisa Smith, a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, who wrote an essay on the findings in the same issue of Science. And it adds a new high-resolution tracking of body size and temperature during a crucial?and long puzzling?time in geologic history.

The researchers did not have complete skeletons to measure for all of the animals, so to track the size of the horses over time they looked at their teeth?in particular, their molars. "It turns out that teeth are much better than femurs," Smith says. A leg bone "does tell you something about size, but teeth are much better." And as far as teeth go, she says, "the best thing to know is the area of the first molar."
The teeth came from a fossil-rich area called Cabin Fork in Wyoming and are part of a substantial collection at the University of Florida built in part by study co-author Jonathan Bloch, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology there. From the collection, the research team could estimate the size of about 44 diminutive adult horses.
Some 40 percent of other mammals in the area seem to have experienced similar shrinking and subsequent growth, notes co-author Ross Secord, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Nebraska?Lincoln. They stuck with the small horses, however, because they had much more solid records from which to accurately date the samples.
The researchers used oxygen isotopes left by freshwater in the fossils to track mean annual temperature from when the animals had been alive. In particular, they sampled the isotopes from teeth of a large, water-dwelling mammal Coryphodon. With these isotope readings, "you get a little, tiny window as to what the temperature was at that time," Smith says.
This close reading has excited Smith and others who have been tracking animal size over the ages. "Although we knew that temperature might set a maximum for body size," Smith says, the new findings actually present a mechanism?and do so in a very detailed manner, showing "how animals responded to a particular temperature at a particular place at a particular time."

An international team of astronomers led by Zachory Berta of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) made the observations of the planet GJ 1214b.
"GJ 1214b is like no planet we know of," Berta said. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water."
The ground-based MEarth Project, led by CfA's David Charbonneau, discovered GJ 1214b in 2009. This super-Earth is about 2.7 times Earth's diameter and weighs almost seven times as much. It orbits a red-dwarf star every 38 hours at a distance of 2 million kilometres, giving it an estimated temperature of 230 degrees Celsius.
In 2010, CfA scientist Jacob Bean and colleagues reported that they had measured the atmosphere of GJ 1214b, finding it likely that it was composed mainly of water. However, their observations could also be explained by the presence of a planet-enshrouding haze in GJ 1214b's atmosphere.
Berta and his co-authors, who include Derek Homeier of ENS Lyon, France, used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) to study GJ 1214b when it crossed in front of its host star. During such a transit, the star's light is filtered through the planet's atmosphere, giving clues to the mix of gases.
"We're using Hubble to measure the infrared colour of sunset on this world," Berta explained.
Hazes are more transparent to infrared light than to visible light, so the Hubble observations help to tell the difference between a steamy and a hazy atmosphere.
They found the spectrum of GJ 1214b to be featureless over a wide range of wavelengths, or colours. The atmospheric model most consistent with the Hubble data is a dense atmosphere of water vapour.
"The Hubble measurements really tip the balance in favour of a steamy atmosphere," Berta said.
Since the planet's mass and size are known, astronomers can calculate the density, of only about 2 grams per cubic centimetre. Water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimetre, while Earth's average density is 5.5 grams per cubic centimetre. This suggests that GJ 1214b has much more water than Earth does, and much less rock.
As a result, the internal structure of GJ 1214b would be extraordinarily different from that of our world.
"The high temperatures and high pressures would form exotic materials like 'hot ice' or 'superfluid water', substances that are completely alien to our everyday experience," Berta said.
Theorists expect that GJ 1214b formed further out from its star, where water ice was plentiful, and migrated inward early in the system's history. In the process, it would have passed through the star's habitable zone, where surface temperatures would be similar to Earth's. How long it lingered there is unknown.
GJ 1214b is located in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), and just 40 light-years from Earth. Therefore, it's a prime candidate for study by the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, planned for launch later this decade.
A paper reporting these results has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal and is available online.

Some of Ireland's oldest inhabitants are facing serious threat and possible extinction because of foreign species, according to researchers at Queen's University.
The red squirrel, Irish hare and red deer are just some of Ireland's indigenous species which are under threat as a result of the introduction of foreign species. A new study which took place over the last two years looked at the impact of two introduced species the bank vole and greater white toothed shrew on two native small mammals, the wood mouse and the pygmy shrew. If the rate of invasion continues as at present throughout the island of Ireland, its native small mammals will die out in at least 80 per cent of their available habitat.
The study, published in the international journal Biological Invasions, found that in the recent past the pygmy shrew has completely vanished in parts of Ireland where both invasive small mammals are found. Wood mouse numbers have decreased by more than 50 per cent in areas where the bank vole is longest established.
Small mammals occupy central positions in food webs, so major changes in species composition which are already occurring, will have both top-down and bottom-up effects in the ecosystem affecting bird and mammal predators as well as the invertebrates, seeds and seedling that small rodents and insectivores feed on.
Professor Ian Montgomery, lead researcher from the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University, said: "The introduction of alien mammals to Ireland over the last 100 years has had major detrimental effects, threatening our indigenous habitats and species. The American grey squirrel, for example, passes a deadly virus to native red squirrels, whilst European hares threaten the ecological and genetic integrity of the native Irish hare through competition and interbreeding.
"Governments, both north and south of the border, are urged to work together to address the overall problem of invasive mammals throughout Ireland, and ensure that we understand both the mechanisms of invasion and the impacts of these aliens. It is no longer tenable to treat each invasive species as an isolated case. We should establish a realistic plan identifying the mammal species that are key to maintaining our unique biodiversity and ecology and those that we should eliminate or control."
The new study is the first of its kind to systematically analyse the cumulative effects of invasive mammal species on indigenous species. Such a process is known as 'invasional meltdown'.
