Associate Director, Communications (Brookline, Massachusetts)


The Associate Director, Communications, ensures the communication and dissemination of Facing History and Ourselves? vision and mission to all external and internal audiences. Under supervision of the Director of Communications, and in conjunction with Senior Management, this position develops communications plan to position the organization and its work optimally with its various audiences. This position oversees the development, writing, and editing of a wide variety of high quality external materials, including the annual report, newsletters, marketing brochures and mailers, e-mail marketing, and development communications. The Associate Director ensures a consistent message and visual design across all external communications, working in close conjunction with the Associate Director, Design.

Responsibilities include:

* With the Director of Communications, Senior Director of External Affairs, and Director of Content, Research and Development, coordinate strategies for external communications. Executes strategies and crafts materials that deliver a consistent message to targeted audiences, including the press, donors, and educators.

* Works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Communications and Senior Management to develop a multi-channel communications strategy and plan for publications and various communication opportunities, consistent with Facing History?s strategic goals.

* Devise communication plans to meet needs of Executive Director and organizational goals; oversee execution of plan, report on performance, and ensure that information is shared internally and externally.

* Ensure that all communications needs from Executive Director, Director of Communications + Senior Management are met in timely manner, including drafting emails and press releases, initiating monthly ?headlines,? making information available and accessible, and anticipating upcoming communication needs.

* Serve as resource for all Staff regarding initiative best practices, including email marketing processes and protocol; present at various Staff retreats.

* Serve as primary liaison with External Affairs team ? develop work plan, identify metrics, and report on goals quarterly.

* Ensure that Facing History?s work remains timely and relevant. Identifies the organization's most urgent priorities and latest information, seeking out interesting organizational events, people and stories; plans the maximum use of this information through new and existing communication vehicles.

* Meet weekly with various teams (Facebook, Website, Press) to set strategy, determine content, and ensure consistent branding and messaging. Ensure organization is presented effectively through websites and advise on and write content, as needed.

* Manage publication projects as appropriate from initial concept and writing to final approval. Ensure timeliness and accuracy of all published content.

* Ensure Staff are kept up to date on organizational priorities thru internal communications, including Wednesday Notes, staff meetings, Intranet.

* Meet with staff from following departments on regular basis to ensure alignment and consistent organizational branding and messaging: Content, Research + Development, Vertical Response, Facebook, External Affairs, HR, Website, Program, Technology.

* Lead supervisor to Project Coordinator, External Affairs and co-supervisor to Assistant Director, External Affairs. Ensure short-term and long-term tasks are on-target and completed by deadline. Help Staff to prioritize goals and ensure workflow is on target. Ensure organizational messaging and branding is clear in all work of Staff members.

* Builds professional relationships across the organization that support the goal of capturing and making more visible all of the good work being accomplished in offices, departments, and initiatives
