IBM (NYSE: IBM) has opened a US$30mn, 600m2 Smarter Data Center (SDC) in Mexican city Guadalajara, with which the company will aim to provide optimized services for an "under penetrated" IT market, Jos? D?az, services manager for IBM Latin America told BNamericas.
The new building, located in IBM's technological campus, is IBM's first SDC in Latin America, though its fourth data center in Mexico - one of which is for internal use.
The SDC is part of a new generation of data centers designed to provide companies access to services such as predictive analytics and real time monitoring of operating performance, which can help reduce costs and energy savings.
"This data center is strategic for us. An intelligent data center can help us differentiate ourselves with a different value for clients and support their different industries by having greater accessibility to their business applications," D?az said.
According to D?az, the SDC offers greater energy savings through different distribution of energy and data cables.
"You'll be able to have smaller equipment with greater capacity mounted on the racks. Air conditioning used to be distributed between the walls and under the false floor. Now we can distribute it in a more complete way than before," D?az said.
"With predictive analytics we can monitor alarms on devices to help shape performance. We can take decisions head of time if there is an expected interruption in service," he added.
IBM said it could potentially increase the size of the data center four times, depending on demand. The data center would be connected to and complement IBM's IT outsourcing command centers launched in June in Mexico City.
The SDC comprises the largest chunk of a US$70mn investment planned for IBM in Mexico in 2012.
Other projects include new infrastructure for offering services, manufacturing projects and the expansion of operations into new cities.
The SDC will form part of IBM's global data center network. Services offered from the new facility will include infrastructure as a service, hosting, virtualization of business applications, scalable cloud projects, business continuity and disaster recovery services, and outsourcing of IT services.
