NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Federal prosecutors filed charges this week against a New Albany man accused of sharing and possessing sexually graphic images of young children and infants.
Patrick Durrett, 24, is charged with one count of distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
"It may now be close to a thousand different images and videos," U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett said.
The investigation began online in February 2012 when Durrett allowed other users to download files on a peer-to-peer network.
Undercover FBI agents accessed 46 files from Durrett's user name.
In March, federal investigators served a search warrant at Durrett's New Albany home where prosecutors said he lived with his mother. U.S. marshals took Durrett into custody immediately.
Investigators would later discover hundreds of images and videos showing young children and infants in horrible situations.
"The compromised positions the infants and toddlers are placed in, in these images, are almost unspeakable," Hogsett said.
FBI agents gathered so much evidence it took at least half a year to process the electronic files.
"It takes an extraordinarily lengthy period of time to review the images and review the videos," Hogsett said.
Durrett has agreed to plead guilty to the charges. He faces up to 20 years in prison on the most serious charge, child pornography distribution.
