GREEN BAY - The president of the Green Bay Packers has unveiled when he wants to retire record-breaking quarterback Brett Favre's number, ending a long rift where both sides have already begun the healing process.

"Brett will be a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2016, and we would like to retire his number prior to his induction," said Packers President Mark Murphy in an online question-and-answer session on the team's web site.

Murphy cited the joint presentation by Favre and current quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the NFL Honors event before Super Bowl XLVII as a "great first step" toward healing.

Favre has admitted his portion of responsibility for the five-year feud with the Packers, following his trade to the New York Jets in 2008 and two years with the co-archrival Minnesota Vikings in 2009-10.

"I know that many of our fans were upset that Brett played for the Vikings. As time goes by, though, I think wounds are healed and people focus more on the great things he did for the team during his 16 years here," said Murphy.

"It is really just a question of timing in terms of retiring his jersey. The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization."
