GM Dealerships Have Glut of Unsold Pickups
In the best year for U.S. auto sales since 2007, GM hasn?t been able to boost its mar?ket share. Part of the rea?son could lie in deal?er?ship lots over?stocked with trucks. Days? store could be ?embar?rass?ingly high,? says one sales manager.
GM had a plan in mind, when it entered July. Could that plan backfire?
GM said it entered July with more than five months? sup?ply of full-size pick?ups, the most since April 2009, accord?ing to researcher Ward?s Auto. This isn?t entirely acci?den?tal: Detroit? based GM wants a stock?pile to carry it through the change to a new design next year. That plan may back?fire if the segment?s sales remain below those assumed at the start of the?year.
?If GM?s mar?ket share does not improve mean?ing?fully, we could see the automaker cut 3Q12 pickup truck pro?duc?tion by more than researcher IHS Automotive?s esti?mate of an 18 per?cent reduc?tion from the sec?ond quar?ter? ? David Lucas, vice pres?i?dent of Autodata.
