Women's Soccer - Golden Hawk Athletics & Recreation

Golden Hawks Blog - Women's Soccer

Hello everyone! My name is Krista Cellucci and I am a fourth year striker for the Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer team. I am a communications major with an interest in public relations and marketing. I was asked to give you guys an inside scoop on everything Laurier women's soccer and our journey throughout nationals or what I like to call, The Big Show.

Before I start talking about the big show you should know that I am also an undercover rapper. I like to refer to it as pure swag but my teammates have other names for my hidden talents. Many people I have classes with think I don't own regular clothes because I live in Laurier & Adidas apparel. The most recent addition to my swag was the black eye I received playing against Western a few weeks ago. I looked more like a swollen avatar the first week but it looked pretty intimidating the last 2 weeks. The truth is, if a black eye is all that comes out of putting in 100% for my teammates, it's the least I could do.

This group of girls is definitely something special and that is what Laurier women's soccer has been for me each and every year during my career with the Hawks. After a tough preseason, many rainy wet practices, injuries, laughs and nail-biting games, I wouldn't have it any other way. With most of our starting line up graduated last season, we definitely had people doubting our ability to live up to our previous successes. I am proud to say that we have made it to the BIG SHOW that I brought up earlier. After coming 1st in the OUA West and earning a Silver medal for our school, we have proven many people wrong and are on the path to bring Home the Gold.

The day started bright and early, and I mean 4:00 am early. We loaded the bus with all the equipment and we were headed to Pearson International airport. Destination - Victoria, British Columbia for the most competitive tournament known to university women's soccer. ?Behind the droopy eyes and the contagious yawns on the bus, we made our way to the airplane. Might I add I am not a fan of flying and the girls definitely got some entertainment from my various facial expressions. Thanks to Maggie [Carmichael] and her counseling services, I was able to fall asleep to one of my favorite songs and found my self in a dream running the beep test (thanks to my shuffle playlist). I woke up on level 21. For those of you who don't know what the beep test is, we'll keep it that way.

After the longest five hours of my life we arrived in Vancouver. It was rainy, wet and foggy so it didn't seem like we were far from home at all. ?We had a training session at an indoor facility, had a bite to eat, and then it was off to Victoria. The vans piled onto a ferry, the local girls were so happy to be home! We always tease them about their "British Columbia lingo" - Did you know that Chundy means 'puke'? Thanks to Katie [Bishop] for expanding my urban dictionary. Anyways, we parked the vans on the ferry and we thoroughly enjoyed the sun that peaked through the beautiful mountains and small islands. The views were breath taking and I am sure we haven't even seen the best of it yet. We saw seals, otters and even where Twilight was filmed!

We are staying at a very spacious hotel and I won rock paper scissors against my roomie for the king size bed. (Emily needs to work on her rock paper scissors skills) Just kidding roomie =) We went on a walk around the harbor, what beautiful scenery! I find myself continually taking the little moments and memories in that I know I will cherish forever, especially because this is my last year with Laurier soccer. Time definitely flies when you enjoy what you do with it. Good thing we are three hours behind here, more time for me to be with this group of people that make every minute worthwhile.

That's a wrap for my first blog! I will be giving you more info about the games in my next edition! ?
