Tonight on AC360: Bringing military dogs home

In a war zone, the important role of military dogs can't be underestimated. The canines detect explosives to save the lives of troops, and they serve as steadfast companions.

The United States has nearly 3,000 military working dogs, with about 600 overseas serving alongside soldiers. Currently they're classified as "equipment," which can prevent them from returning home with those they protect.

If a dog retires on a base abroad, considered "excess equipment," they're not entitled to fly back home. And the shipping costs are expensive, possibly thousands of dollars.

A bill that was passed in the House and awaiting a vote in the Senate would change the classification and policy. Supporters of the legislation believe the dogs deserve care at home for their contributions to the country.

Anderson spoke with Staff Sergeant Price and met Gino, a 7-year-old German Shepherd who is being adopted after years of service. Gino is an explosives patrol dog who helped with convoys, roadway searches and other risky missions in Afghanistan. "He's a friend, a family member, and definitely someone to watch my back," said Price.

Watch the interview tonight at 8 and 10 p.m. ET, and find out more about the Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act from CNN's Chris Lawrence.

Activists: Dozens killed in Syria shelling

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian troops rained tank and artillery shells down on a rebellious suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday, killing dozens of people during a particularly bloody week across the country, opposition groups and activists said.

It's difficult to get an accurate death toll in tightly controlled Syria, where journalists and human rights groups are either banned or severely restricted. But two opposition groups that compile and document casualties reported the death of more than 125 civilians in fighting across the country on Thursday alone.

Death tolls often take several days to compile because of the restrictions and chaos in the country.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday's toll included more than 60 soldiers. If confirmed, it would be one of the highest death tolls on a single day since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad in March 2011.

Activists said at least 43 people were killed in over two days of shelling in the sprawling Damascus suburb of Douma that has been a hotbed of dissent against Assad's regime. The dead included three children and five members of a single family.

The barrage is part of a fierce government offensive aimed at regaining control of parts of Damascus suburbs where rebels operate, particularly Douma.

A local activist who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons said the shelling was "relentless" throughout Thursday, and exploding shells killed people in their homes.

"They (government troops) are trying to bring Douma under control, but they are being met by fierce resistance," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's director. He said most of the dead were civilians.

The Local Coordination Committees network said 59 people were killed in Thursday's shelling of Damascus suburbs, most of them in Douma. The difference in tolls could not be reconciled.

The state-run news agency SANA said troops continue to pursue "terrorist groups" in Douma, raiding their hideouts and destroying their communications and other equipment. Clashes resulted in the death of dozens of terrorists ? the official term authorities use for rebels ? and the wounding and arrest of many others, the statement said.

Amateur videos posted by activists online showed bloodied bodies lying on blankets in a room and others shrouded in white sheets and placed on stretchers. "A new massacre by Bashar Assad," cried a man holding a dead girl in a pink blouse, a large gash on her face.

The violence around the capital's suburbs mirrored fighting across many parts of Syria that killed dozens of other people Thursday, according to the groups.

Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several huge suicide bombings this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the battle. A bomb blast rocked central Damascus on Thursday near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people and sending a cloud of black smoke into the air.

The latest carnage came as world powers show new urgency to resolve the crisis, which so far has resisted international efforts.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a breakthrough. Syria has the protection of Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call on Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan. His plan calls for the formation of a national unity government that would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene militarily.

Space Tourist Trips To the Moon May Fly On Recycled Spaceships

For those unfamiliar with the tradeoffs: Hall effect thrusters make fairly efficient use of the reaction mass - about 2000s, compared to ~250 for solid rockets or ~300-400 for liquid rockets. That means a considerable increase in your delta-v - since you only need 10-20% as much reaction mass for the same impulse, you get 5-10x more delta-v. Great, right?

The trouble is that you need a power source. Liquid fuel rockets just burn the propellant. Hall effect thrusters (and other ion thrusters) need a power source in addition to the propellant.

This is a great tradeoff for stationkeeping on satellites - you only need tiny amounts of thrust, so you can easily generate enough power using solar cells or a RTG. Thus the very efficient use of reaction mass means a much longer useful life, or more useful payload in your satellite for a given launch mass, etc. It's just plain more efficient.

But this isn't like that. They seem to want to use them to perform the Hohmann tranfer [wikipedia.org]. That means having a very high thrust for a short duration - not just because you want to get there more quickly, but because it's much more efficient than a long continuous burn.

They're talking about 100KW. That seems low. Ballpark 5000 newtons of thrust... Compare to the Apollo command/service module at ~90,000 newtons. Thus they'll need a fairly long burn at that power. How the heck are they generate that kind of power for a long duration?

These Are The 20 Best Advertising Internships In - Business Insider

There's a new set of internship rankings for Mad Men in training who are scouring America for the perfect first-advertising gig.

Internship King, a year-old website, has collected the top advertising internships across the country and is asking former interns to rank them until midnight Friday. (Click the link to vote). Interns have also listed pay, pros, and cons about their experiences.

"Some agencies will have unpaid programs so it's a way to have cheap labor, but others provide a platform," Ted Williams, founder of Internship King, told BI. "And the feedback from the agencies is great?they're happy to have a place that's a hub to talk about agency programs."

Right now the race for first is close between Campbell Mithun and MRY, which have overwhelmingly more votes than other, bigger agencies.

Although this information proves useful, two potential problems stand out. Even though an experience at CP+B Miami is probably very different from CP+B Boulder, the ratings are compiled into a single result for the agency as a whole. Salaries also only give an approximate amount since it averages pay from various years and different seasons (usually school-year internships are for course credit while summer is compensated).

Oddly, interns are encouraged to vote 25 times a day, so if you don't think that programs are being properly represented, now would be the time to cast a vote.

What do you think? If you have internship stories of agency experiences, email them to LStampler@businessinsider.com.

Introduction
Have you ever had ants ruin your picnic? Commercial ant repellents can keep them away, but who wants to spray poison near their food? In this activity, you can investigate the effectiveness of some less toxic solutions that you may have around your home. Armed with your discoveries, you may be able to keep your next picnic from turning into an ant buffet!

Background
All animals sense chemical signals in their environments. Some animals use these signals to communicate. One animal famous for chemical communication is the ant. When you see a line of ants, it is because they are following an invisible chemical trail. This type of chemical signal is positive?it is called an attractant because it is meant to attract others. But signals can also be negative, warning other ants to stay away. This type of signal is called a repellent.

Sometimes repellents can come in handy. We don't like ants to get into our homes, so if we apply a negative chemical signal around their foundations, the signal will tell the ants to keep out. Chemical companies will sometimes try to copy a negative signal to sell as an insect repellent. But sometimes these chemicals can have side effects or be poisonous to pets or small children. Luckily, there may be less toxic remedies around your home.

Materials
???? Q-tips
???? Small cups or bottle caps
???? Large, vinyl tablecloth
???? A location outside where there are plenty of ants crawling around
???? Water
???? Sugar
???? Baking soda
???? Vinegar
???? Detergent (dish soap, laundry detergent, hand soap, etcetera)
???? Tabasco sauce
???? Lemon juice (or other citrus juice)
???? Commercial ant repellent, if you want to compare its effectiveness
???? Any other solution you would like to test!
???? Watch or stopwatch (optional)

Preparation
???? In a small cup or bottle cap, make a saturated solution by dissolving some baking soda into water. Keep adding and mixing baking soda until no more will dissolve.
???? In a small cup or bottle cap, make sugar water by dissolving sugar in water until no more sugar will dissolve.
???? If you use a commercial ant repellent, you should have adult permission and supervision.
???? Separately make up additional small cups or bottle caps of the solutions you will be testing: Water, vinegar, detergent, Tabasco sauce, lemon juice and, if you choose to test it, commercial ant repellent.

Procedure
???? Lay out your vinyl tablecloth on the ground in an area of heavy ant activity. Wait awhile for the ants to walk on the tablecloth. (Be careful when working with ants?some can sting and bite!)
???? Tip: If not many ants are walking on the tablecloth, you could try putting a small piece of fruit near them, such as an apple slice, wait until the ants cover it, and then carefully shake them off onto the tablecloth. If it is very hot outside, you may need to wait until later in the day when it cools down for ants to come out of their holes.
???? Next to the tablecloth have ready the solutions you will test: saturated baking soda solution, sugar water, water, vinegar, detergent, Tabasco sauce, lemon juice and, if you want, chemical ant repellent.
???? Test a solution on an ant by dipping a Q-tip into the solution and drawing a circle around the insect, about 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Did the ant stay inside the circle or leave it? Was there anything else you observed about the ant's behavior?
???? In this way, test solutions on the ants until you have tested at least five ants with each substance.
???? Which solutions usually kept ants inside the circle? From which did the ants readily walk out? Potential repellents will be solutions that clearly trap the ants inside a circle.
???? Were there circles in which the ants spent time standing, neither quickly leaving nor appearing trapped?
???? Extra: Once you find some potential repellents, you can figure out which ones work best. Try this activity again, but now time how long the ant remains trapped in the circle. Which repellents repel the ants for the longest amount of time?
???? Extra: You can also time how long the ant stays trapped in the circle to experiment with different concentrations of repellents. How diluted can your solutions be and still act as effective ant repellents?
???? Extra: Try a similar activity to this one but only test dry or powdered substances. You won't need a tablecloth for this; rather for a hard, dry substance like chalk you can draw the circle on a sidewalk. For a powder, like baking soda, sugar or salt, just sprinkle it in a circle around the ant. Can you find some powdered or solid substances that work as ant repellents?

Oil prices rise as European debt measures spur demand

Oil prices rebounded from their lowest close in almost nine months, Bloomberg reports.

The increase was credited to speculation that European measures to fight the debt crisis could spur more demand for fuel.

Crude prices increased as much as 3.2 percent, a Bloomberg survey showed. Oil for August delivery was up $2.48 to $80.17 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices are down 19 percent this year and have dropped 22 percent this quarter.

Union angered as schools release figures

Teacher unions have told schools to flout the law and refuse to release national standards data to the media.

But some schools have already released figures showing how many of their students are meeting the standards and what they're doing to improve achievement.

The Dominion Post has asked schools across the Wellington region to release the information they were required to send to the Education Ministry about the number of pupils at, above, below or well below national standards in reading, writing and maths.

The ministry declined a request for the data, but acting senior manager Dennis Cribb said individual schools could be approached.

About 10 have already responded with information and others have indicated their data will be forthcoming.

Some of the data released includes results from 2010 and 2011, showing pupils' progress between years.

But teachers union, the New Zealand Educational Institute, said schools should not give results to the news media and should instead refer any requests for the information to the ministry.

"We are entering a new era of `naming and shaming' schools in order to sell newspapers and even worse, the publication of league tables will be unfair and based on faulty, misleading and valueless misinformation," NZEI president Ian Leckie said.

The Principals' Federation has also advised schools on ways to try to prevent league tables being created from the information they supply.

In an "urgent" advisory, NZPF president Paul Drummond suggested schools should "consider reporting in general terms".

Mr Leckie said parents wanting to know about a school's performance should talk with the teachers and principal. They could also look at Education Review Office reports.

"We would also ask members of the news media to take a close look at their own ethics before publishing data that will be narrow, unfair and inaccurate," Mr Leckie said.

Dominion Post editor Bernadette Courtney said: "We have asked for this information because we believe parents have a right to see it."

Last night, Education Minister Hekia Parata said the data was public information but she wanted to see it used responsibly.

The ministry has indicated it will release data in September.

IP E-Games eyes casino in Cagayan free port | gambler

Listed firm enters new ?gaming? sector

By: Paolo G. Montecillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Listed video game publisher IP E-Games Ventures Inc. plans to invest in a different kind of ?gaming? as it moves to set up casino operations in the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport.

In a disclosure on Thursday, IP E-Games, which recently spun off the bulk of its video gaming assets to a subsidiary it co-owns with former rival Level Up!, said it would acquire 36,000 square meters of land at the planned casino complex in Cagayan.

?The casino is a state-of-the-art casino offering the full range of gambling offerings including, but not limited to, black jack, baccarat, craps, roulette and slots,? the company told the local bourse.

The company will buy the land for P70 million and will be paid through a combination of cash and shares.

The transaction was done through IP E-Games subsidiary, RAN Online Inc.

IP E-Games said it hopes to ride on the expected growth of the country?s gaming sector, which is seen becoming a major draw for tourists across the region.

?Similar to Singapore?s tourism income, which saw a steep 74-percent increase from $10 billion to $17 billion from 2007 to 2009, the Philippines expects a boost to its tourism income due to gaming and gaming-related projects,? IP E-Games said.

The firm cited companies like Enrique Razon Jr.?s Bloomberry Resorts Corp., one of the four groups allowed to put up casinos at the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) Entertainment City in Pasay.

Casinos, IP E-Games said, ?will be key drivers in achieving President Aquino?s vision of bringing in 10 million visitors (to the Philippines) by 2016.?

The Department of Tourism says it is on track to growing tourist arrivals this year by 18 percent to 4.6 million visitors.

?(The company) believes there will be a ?spillover? effect of tourists to other key locations in the Philippines such as the Cagayan Ecozone,? the disclosure read.

IP E-Games said it was poised to be one of Cagayan?s major investors.

The company?s shares surged 2.56 percent?outperforming the main index that fell 0.03 percent?following IP E-Games? announcement.

IP E-Games? foray outside of its core video game business was approved by shareholders in a symbolic meeting last May. The corporation has a public float of 5.3 percent, which means over 94 percent of its shares are held by its controlling owners.

The expansion into gaming is in line with the IPVG group?s restructuring program in search of more lucrative industries. Earlier, IP E-Games? affiliate IP Converge was acquired by the 8990 Group, a property firm with big investments in Visayas and Mindanao. Meanwhile, its former parent firm IPVG Corp. recently ventured into mineral refining locally and overseas.

In 2011, IP E-Games acquired several Internet cafe chains in a bid to diversify its revenue stream and complement its video game publishing operations. More than two thirds of all Filipino users still access the web through Internet cafes.

Why Fish Oil Omega 3 For Puppies is the Most Important Addition ...

There?s no doubt about it, fish oil omega 3 for puppies can help with their development and protect them from degenerative diseases in the future. They can help puppies in the same way they do for us by lowering the risk of heart disease, keeping the cholesterol levels healthy which can be a real problem as they get older and keeping their joints healthy too.

Fish oil omega 3 for puppies is among the most commonly used supplement in all of veterinary medicine, to the point that they are not even recognized as an alternative treatment anymore. It is the essential omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA that provide the benefits as they have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation lies behind most health problems in puppies and older dogs which is why these oils are so effective.

They also help to heal dry or irritated hairless patches, helping the hair to regrow and promoting a healthy shining coat. These essential fats cannot be made by dogs or humans for that matter and puppy food today contains very little, making it even more important to add a daily oil to their diets.

The key is to use the best oils possible with all the toxins removed or you can cancel out any benefits. You don?t need a special one for puppies and dogs as the ones for us humans are just fine! If they are not able to swallow them, simply cut them open and pour onto their food each morning. One 1000mg capsule or soft gel is enough as the human dose is two or more!

A high proportion of DHA fats are necessary as these provide the anti-inflammatory benefits and help to keep the brain healthy and your puppy mentally alert. Look to get 250mg of DHA in each 1000mg capsule for the most benefits.

The most effective and purest fish oil omega 3 for puppies will be molecularly distilled to remove all traces of mercury, lead, arsenic and PCB?s from the fish and that are still present in many oils today, just check the label. As you can see, most puppies are lacking in these essential fats and so giving them the right daily dose of oil can really help them to live a longer and much healthier life. If you would like to learn more about the pure DHA omega 3 supplements I recommend and use for my own dogs, visit my website today.

An easy way to attract money | The Self Improvement Blog

You need a 7 Day BrainwashThe ?holy grail? of the law of attraction would surely be to find an easy way of attracting money. Ever since the end of bartering, people have searched for some simple steps to become rich. A little research ? by which I mean using myself as a guinea pig ? has led me to discover that there is such a way and that all those who use it have three things in common.

In short, these are:

1. Belief without doubt.

2. A sense of worthiness.

3. The willingness to take inspired action.

Before I explain those, however, we must define ?easy.? I have seen fire eaters who make their act look easy, but I?m extremely certain that it isn?t, so I won?t be trying that anytime soon. Could we agree that ?easy? means a way of attracting wealth which feels enjoyable, works consistently well and is fast? It?s not exactly science, but then when it comes to attracting money, it?s not a science anyway, is it?

Of the three elements which comprise our easy way to attract money, none is more or less important than the other. You must have all three in place, and when you do, you will attract money ? easily!

The first element is belief. You must believe that you have the ability to attract money. That sounds obvious, but in fact a lot of people who say they believe they could attract money fill their minds with doubts and misgivings by checking how the majority of their friends and peers are doing financially. Instead, they go back to their personal treadmill, shaking their heads and saying it can?t be done.

The second element in our easy way to attract money is your sense of worthiness. You have to know in your heart that you deserve more money. In order to do that, you?ll need to honour your uniqueness and feel deep within you that you have something of value to contribute just by being you! The more you can value yourself in your mind, the more you?ll be able to ?sell? your passion ? which in the end is what people pay for.

The third, and by no means least, of our elements is to take action. Although I said that all three are required to complete the formula for the easy way to attract money, there is a reason why I?ve left this one until last. We?re conditioned to think that a lot of activity ? usually labelled ?hard work? ? is what?s needed to get money, which we call ?earning? it.

On the other hand, there?s a terrible misunderstanding about the ?law of attraction? which is that merely visualising wealth will bring it to you. In fact, you must take action too ? but that action needs to be inspired by the belief and the sense of worthiness I?ve mentioned above. The key to the easy way to attract money is to feel good about yourself, know that you?re worthwhile, and then act on the ideas that pop up ? which is sometimes called ?inspiration.?

If feeling good, liking yourself and trusting your heart feels like hard work to you then I?m sorry for misleading you. On the other hand, if you like these ideas, then you have finally stumbled on an easy way to attract money!

Court Rules Kiwi Cops Botched Megaupload Raid

New Zealand police used invalid warrants to search and seize property from the mansion of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, a high court judge in that country has reportedly ruled. The papers that authorities used were general warrants and fell well short of describing the offenses alleged, High Court Judge Helen Winkelmann said.

Next stop for Arizona immigration law: Back to the courts?

Damian Dovarganes / AP

Members of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles hold a rally in response to the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Arizona's immigration law, outside the Los Angeles Federal Court building on Monday.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

The ?show me your papers? provision of Arizona?s immigration law that was left standing by the U.S. Supreme Court is likely to wind up in a familiar place ? back in the courtroom.

The nation?s top justices on Monday struck down three sections of SB 1070 but unanimously upheld the most-discussed provision: Section 2(B) requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop, detain or arrest for other legitimate reasons ?if there?s reasonable suspicion? the person is in the country illegally.

But exactly how local police will go about enforcing that provision is raising more questions than answers. Enforcement had been put on hold pending the Supreme Court decision; lower courts must lift the injunction before it can take effect.

Even the?Supreme Court justices hinted that they expect the?provision to be legally challenged again.

?There is a basic uncertainty about what the law means and how it will be enforced. At this stage, without the benefit of a definitive interpretation from the state courts, it would be inappropriate to assume 2(B) will be construed in a way that creates a conflict with federal law,? the high court said.

The Supreme Court declared three parts of Arizona's immigration law unconstitutional, but unanimously upheld the most controversial part. Now the high court is expected to make a ruling on "Obamacare" on Thursday. NBC's Pete Williams reports and NBC's Chuck Todd and Professor Noah Feldman weigh in.

?This opinion does not foreclose other preemption and constitutional challenges to the law as interpreted and applied after it goes into effect.?

The American Civil Liberties Union says it is exploring legal challenges to keep ?show me your papers? from ever taking effect.

?The Supreme Court vacated the injunction against it but took pains to point out the potential constitutional problems that are inherent in Section 2(B) and drew a firm line in the sand that the state cannot cross,? said Cecillia Wang, director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project. ?We are going to be in court bringing new claims and evidence to stop 2(B) again.?

Among the possible claims are that the provision violates the Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures and that it invites racial profiling, ACLU officials say.

Joe Rubio, lead organizer for the Arizona Interfaith Network, a coalition of religious groups that opposed SB 1070, said the provision ?leaves a nebulous area? if it goes into effect.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County, Ariz., shown here, about the ripple effect of the Supreme Court's ruling.

?It?s going to be important that the state monitors very closely how police deal with immigrants during regular stops and make sure racial profiling does not occur,? Rubio said.

?I think we?re going to have a few months here where people are suspending judgment to see how it?s going to be implemented.?

Jim Gilchrist, founder and president of the Minuteman Project, an anti-illegal immigration group that recruits volunteers to patrol the U.S. border with Mexico, said the Supreme Court decision ?left vague? the fate of enforcement of immigration laws by local police.

?Police will be able to ask (about immigration status); however, that?s all they can do,? he said.

?Nobody?s really getting serious about this. Everybody keeps kicking the ball around the court.?

The interpretation of Section 2(B)?also could put law officers in a precarious bind. There are no written instructions on how long local police must wait for federal immigration officials to respond, for example, when they encounter someone they suspect is illegal.? And immigration checks could open police up to accusations of racial profiling.

"Talk about 'no win' - if they find the person is not in authorized status, what do they do? Hold them for ICE which doesn't want them? Charge them with some state crime?" said Margaret Stock, an immigration attorney who has?has testified before Congress on immigration, homeland security and military issues.

"If they make a mistake, they get sued. If they make too many mistakes, the rest of the statute gets enjoined as unconstitutional as enforced."

"We're going to get sued if we do. We're going to get sued if we don't. That's a terrible position to put law enforcement officers in," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, whose territory covers much of southern Arizona, told The Associated Press.

Tucson police Chief Roberto Villasenor told the AP he estimates the statute will result in 50,000 additional calls a year to federal immigration authorities in his city alone.

Romney pledges immigration reform, wants more state 'latitude'

Suspects for minor crimes like shoplifting or vandalism, who would normally be released with a citation, must be booked into custody if immigration authorities "don't answer the phone, they never call us back after we talk to them or whatever," Villasenor said.

The Department of Homeland Security acknowledges that the provision raises the possibility that its offices might be flooded by calls for verification checks.

?The Court?s decision not to strike down Section 2?at this time will make DHS? work more challenging,? DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement.

Jon Feere, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based think tank that advocates for limited legal immigration, suggested that enforcement will ultimately lead to tougher immigration laws once Congress or the courts are forced to act definitively.

?There will now be an extensive record every time Arizona contacts ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) about an illegal alien detained by local law enforcement. When the White House inevitably refuses to take an illegal alien into custody, forcing Arizona to release the alien back out onto the streets, it will become a national story if the alien goes on to commit a serious crime. Lax federal enforcement of immigration laws will be to blame,? he wrote in a blog post.

Five other states have passed laws similar to Arizona?s --?Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah.

The ACLU says it has raised nearly $8.8 million in a special fund to challenge ?show me your papers? laws in Arizona and those other states. And it?s ready to go to court again.

?If state governments enact new immigration bills, we say bring it on, we will see them in court,? ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said Monday.

The Justice Department has set up a federal hotline for the public to report potential civil rights concerns regarding the Arizona law. The phone number is 1-855-353-1010. The email is: SB1070(at)usdoj.gov.

Blue Jays power past Red Sox

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:13 a.m. ET June 26, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Take them out of Toronto and the Blue Jays hit plenty of long balls.

Jose Bautista, Colby Rasmus and J.P. Arencibia hit two-run homers Monday night to lead the Blue Jays to a 9-6 victory over Boston despite two home runs by David Ortiz that tied him for the most multihomer games in Red Sox history.

It was the fourth win in six games for Toronto, which overcame two errors and blew an early four-run lead.

"The top of our order has been swinging good of late," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "The way Jose, Edwin (Encarnacion) and Rasmus have been going. ... They're swinging the bats well for us."

The Blue Jays are tied with the Yankees for the major league lead with 54 road homers and they have come in 39 games away from Rogers Centre.

They needed all of them Monday because of Ortiz's power display.

Ortiz hit a two-run homer and a solo shot, his 37th multihomer game for the Red Sox, tying Ted Williams for the club record. He has 398 career homers that ties Dale Murphy for 51st all-time.

"I can't tell you what to attribute it to," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said of the 36-year-old Ortiz continuing to swing a hot bat. "His batting practice every day is stellar, his games have been consistently terrific. The only time he got outside of himself was a couple of days ago. Then he got the off day (Sunday) and he came back with a vengeance tonight."

It's his 11th straight season with 20 or more homers.

Henderson Alvarez (4-6) pitched five innings then left with right elbow soreness. He allowed five runs - three earned - and six hits to snap a four-game losing streak. The Blue Jays had lost his last seven starts.

"When he went out for the sixth inning he had trouble getting loose," Farrell said. "It was a precautionary thing. We'll get him an MRI tomorrow. We don't anticipate (him missing a start), but we're going to take every precautionary measure."

Casey Janssen worked the ninth for his eighth save, striking out the only three batters he faced.

Boston's Felix Doubront (8-4) gave up seven runs - five earned - and 11 hits in six innings.

Boston lost for just the third time in its last 12 in a game delayed by rain for 1 hour, 56 minutes.

With the score tied 5-5 in the sixth, Ben Francisco had a two-out double off the wall in center field over Ryan Kalish's leap and Arencibia homered off a sign over the Green Monster seats.

Bautista's homer, his 24th, off reliever Matt Albers made it 9-5 in the seventh. The Blue Jays had a runner on first with two outs when heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder delayed the game.

After play resumed, Blue Jays first baseman Encarnacion and Bautista both made diving plays on balls.

The Blue Jays took advantage of third baseman Will Middlebrooks' fielding error to score two unearned runs in a four-run first. Brett Lawrie opened the game with a single before Rasmus hit a homer that hooked around the right-field foul pole, his 14th, to make it 2-0. Bautista reached on the error and scored on Encarnacion's double. Rajai Davis hustled down the line for a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Rasmus' homer hit the top of the short wall and bounced over.

"I knew I barreled it up," he said. "Once it hit the top, I knew it was gone."

Boston cut it to 4-2 in the bottom on the inning on Ortiz's homer that snapped an 0-for-11 stretch. His second homer made it 9-6 in the eighth.

"It's unbelievable," Middlebrooks said of Ortiz. "I thought the guy hits everything hard."

Rasmus' RBI single made it 5-2 in the fifth.

In the third, the Blue Jays made two errors - one by shortstop Yunel Escobar and the other by second baseman Kelly Johnson - which led to both runs. Johnson booted Jarrod Saltalamacchia's two-out grounder, allowing Dustin Pedroia to score from third, before Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single.

Kalish's RBI single tied it in the fourth.

NOTES: Middlebrooks was named the AL's Player of the Week on Monday. "It's a nice bonus," Valentine said. "He had a great week." Outfielder Cody Ross joked, "he stole it from me. I made a good push, though." Ross had two homers and five RBIs in Boston's win Sunday. ... Blue Jays 1B Adam Lind was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. "It was in an environment that allowed him to relax and get back to the type of player he was in Toronto," Farrell said. "His performance has forced the decision to get him back here to get a productive left-handed hitter back in the lineup. He just felt like his body was more loose and he had increased range at first base." ... Valentine said RHP Josh Beckett, on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation, may pitch Friday in Seattle. He's eligible to come off the DL Thursday.

LastPass Premium Password Manager (for Android)

It's hard to believe something as utilitarian as a password manager has such diehard fans, but LastPass, our Editors' Choice winner for both free and premium ($1/month, direct) desktop-based password managers, has a cult following. Converts swear by this tool?a Web service that securely stores passwords and login information, decrypts them locally, and automatically fills them in for you as you browse on your PC or Mac.

LastPass Password Manager Premium (free for Premium subscribers) lets you access your vault of saved logins and other login data on the go. It performs much better thanks to a recent update, but still takes too much work to auto-complete fields. Yes, it beats other mobile password managers like Dashlane (for iPhone) (free, 3.5 stars) and Keeper 5.0 for Android (free, 3 stars), but I'm reserving Editors' Choice judgment for when Dashlane releases its Android app this July. Dashlane currently shares the Editors' Choice award for desktop-based password managers, with LastPass.

Get Started?Through Your Desktop
I like apps that are easy to use the minute I download them. LastPass is not one of these. When I first launched the app, I saw a blank screen and couldn't figure out what to do?it turns out I was staring at an empty Vault, or a list of saved login information and other data. This is fine if you've already set up a LastPass account through the desktop client, but definitely not if the app is your first experience with LastPass.

Upon the advice of a LastPass spokesperson I started entering passwords for storage through my desktop browser. As you browse on your desktop, you?re prompted to save new login information and personal details commonly used to fill out generic forms (called Form Fill profiles). You can organize these into folders, like you would with bookmarks. Because this is a cloud-based service, LastPass quickly syncs your account information across PC, Mac, BlackBerry, iOS, Android, and a Dolphin HD browser plug-in.

Managing your Vault through the app itself is difficult. There are no auto-prompts when you create new accounts, and auto-filling is tedious to use unless you launch saved sites in LastPass?s slow, mediocre built-in browser. Forget about Flash or geolocation support there.

Some mobile sites, like banking sites, don't even let you auto-fill information, though this is due to the way banks code their mobile websites. The safest workaround is to download your bank's app and use LastPass to log in.

One neat feature is the ability to use LastPass to log into your apps. Simply tap and hold a login field and select Input Method/LastPass to find and fill in your login information.

Got a dirty secret to record on the fly? LastPass also lets you enter unclassifiable jibberish into a Secure Note; you can attach photos, PDFs, and voice memos as well. Your subscription comes with 50 MB of free encrypted storage. Pretty neat.

Improved Input Method
My biggest complaint about the previous version was its lousy input method when using other browsers. It didn't always work for me; now it does. When you encounter a form field you'll find a LastPass asterisk (*) on your keyboard, though at the moment it only supports the stock Android keyboard. Tap this to open your LastPass vault within the browser and select which login information to auto-fill. If you don't want to use the built-in browser, LastPass has a couple weak alternatives. You can install bookmarklets-- a tiny Java script contained in a bookmark ? that work with Opera, Chrome, and IE. When you reach a site in your browser that requires a log-in, launching the bookmark will switch to LastPass and log in to that site. If you prefer to stay in Safari, you can install bookmarklets that will automatically fill forms and passwords. The process isn't quite as simple as adding bookmarklets on a PC, so LastPass recommends installing them on a desktop browser and syncing them over. LastPass also offers free plugins to use with third-party browsers like Dolphin HD and Firefox Mobile, although they're as tedious to use as the browser.

Better, But Lags Behind Desktop Experience
LastPass for Android is a solid app for securely storing passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. However, without automated actions and prompts, it?s not nearly as useable as the Editors? Choice-winning desktop application. Furthermore it doesn?t support alternative keyboards, and I don?t think it?s far-fetched to say most of us would rather eschew LastPass than our favorite keyboard.

The app is faster and better performing than ever, but its built-in browser has a lot of work to do. LastPass (for Android) is the best of the password managers for Android that I've reviewed so far, but I'm reserving Editors' Choice judgment until I see Dashlane on Android, which is expected to come out this July.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court struck down key provisions of Arizona's crackdown on immigrants Monday but said a much-debated portion on checking suspects' status could go forward.

The court did not throw out the state provision requiring police to check the immigration status of someone they suspect is in the United States illegally. Even there, though, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges.

The decision upholds the "show me your papers" requirement for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

The court announced that Thursday would be the last day of rulings this term, which means the decision on President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul probably will come that day.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the opinion for the court that was unanimous on allowing the status check to go forward. The court was divided on striking down the other portions.

Kennedy said the law could ? and suggested it should ? be read to avoid concerns that immigration status checks could lead to prolonged detention.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.

Five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also are on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor joined all of Kennedy's opinion.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas would have allowed all the challenged provisions to take effect. Justice Samuel Alito would have allowed police to arrest undocumented immigrants who seek work, and also make arrests without warrants.

Scalia, in comments from the bench, caustically described Obama's recently announced plans to ease deportation rules for some children of illegal immigrants.

"The president said at a news conference that the new program is 'the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the administration's proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind," Scalia said.
