NEW YORK (AP) ? A widespread winter storm dumped snow over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm moving from the nation's midsection.
The National Weather Service expected up to a foot of snow in parts of southern New England, with the heaviest snowfall possibly in Providence, R.I., and Boston, which declared parking bans to allow snow removal vehicles to clean the streets. Winter storm warnings were in effect in parts of those states and in Connecticut.
New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow as the storm moved in from the west. In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.
"Expect those accumulations to kind of work their way northeastward through much of New York state and much of New England," weather service meteorologist Brian Hurley said.
Drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph.
About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.
In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.
Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.
Parts of southern Indiana saw 6 to 8 inches of snow from the storm, some in areas that had received more than a foot from a blizzard earlier in the week.
That blizzard was part of a storm system that dumped more than a foot of snow in some places and has been blamed for at least 16 deaths. It also spawned more than a dozen tornadoes in Alabama, the National Weather Service said.
But Saturday's snow wasn't as heavy as that of the previous storm, the weather service said.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A young woman who died after being gang-raped and beaten on a bus in India's capital was cremated Sunday amid an outpouring of anger and grief by millions across the country demanding greater protection for women from sexual violence.
The cremation took place during a private ceremony in New Delhi soon after the woman's body arrived in the capital on a special Air India flight from Singapore, where she died at a hospital Saturday after being sent for medical treatment.
The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from going to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from rape victims, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts can drag on for years.
Security was tight, with no access to the public or media at the crematorium.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party, were at the airport to receive the body and meet family members of the victim who were on the flight.
Hours after the victim died early Saturday, Indian police charged six men who had been arrested in connection with the attack with murder, adding to accusations that they beat and gang-raped the woman on a New Delhi bus on Dec. 16.
New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six suspects face the death penalty if convicted, in a case that has triggered protests across India and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.
After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the victim, who has not been identified, was taken Thursday to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specializes in multi-organ transplants, but her condition worsened, with her vital signs deteriorating.
Following her death, thousands of Indians lit candles, held prayer meetings and marched through various cities and towns, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, on Saturday night to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment.
But even as thousands mourned the rape victim's death and in a sign of how pervasive such crimes are, police in West Bengal state were investigating another suspected gang-rape and death.
In the latest case, the family of a woman said she and her husband were attacked by six men as they returned home after working at a brick factory.
They dragged the woman into a nearby farm after pouring acid into her husband's mouth, the family said.
The woman was found dead with multiple injuries, said police officer Bhaskar Mukherjee, adding he was waiting for an autopsy report.
No charges have been laid. Another police officer, Sugata Sen, said four men had been detained for questioning.
The alleged attack is similar to the Dec. 16 case, where the woman and a male friend, who also has not been identified, were on a bus after watching a film when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.
Dozens of protesters tried to break through a police cordon Sunday and march to the parliament building in the Indian capital, but were pushed back. The protesters, belonging to the student wing of main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, shouted anti-government slogans as they marched.
Hundreds of policemen have sealed off the high-security area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to parliament, the president's palace, the prime minister's office and several ministries.
Gandhi assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim's death "deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity."
Attitudes by Indians toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen as provocative.
Meanwhile, a United Nations statement said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "offers his sincerest condolences" to the victim's family and "utterly condemns this brutal crime."
"Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated," the statement said. "Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected."
Ban urged the Indian government to take steps to deter such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice, and to "strengthen critical services for rape victims," it said.

An expensive prostate cancer radiation treatment known as proton beam therapy has just as many side effects as a more common and cheaper radiation method, according to a new study.
In terms of side effects, ?In the long term, there?s really no difference in outcomes between proton radiation and IMRT for men with prostate cancer,? said lead author Dr. James Yu, a radiation oncologist at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.
Proton therapy advocates argue that protons blast radiation directly to the tumor and therefore avoid side effects. The more common ?intensity-modulated? radiotherapy (IMRT) exposes some healthy tissue to radiation that researchers hypothesized would increase side effects and even additional cancers.
After a year, however, the study found the same number of side effects among men who?d had both treatments.
Prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, kills about 28,000 Americans each year. However, many men don?t die of the disease, because many tumors grow very slowly.
Treatments include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, and frequent surveillance - aka ?watchful waiting.?
Although researchers are at odds over which treatment - proton therapy or IMRT - is the better option for men who choose radiation, that hasn?t stopped the growth of proton beam centers. There are ten such centers in the U.S., according to the National Association for Proton Therapy, with eight more under development or being built.
Each one can cost more than $125 million, and Medicare pays doctors about twice as much for proton therapy.
For the study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers tracked Medicare claims in 2008 and 2009 for treatment-related complications in nearly 28,000 men with prostate cancer for up to a year. Only two percent of the prostate cancer patients underwent proton therapy and the remainder had IMRT.
After six months, nearly 10 percent of IMRT-treated patients, and six percent of proton therapy patients, had side effects including incontinence, a burning sensation while urinating or difficulty getting an erection. However, the difference disappeared a year after treatment, when nearly one in five patients suffered side effects regardless of which radiation treatment they had.
Yu and colleagues found that proton therapy costs nearly twice as much: $32,428 per course of treatment, versus $18,575 for IMRT. That difference was consistent with that found in other studies.
?The ball is in the court of the proton folks in terms of proving a benefit,? Yu told Reuters Health.
The study only looked at side effects, and did not compare the effectiveness of the treatments, which proton therapy advocates said was a significant weakness.
If Yu is ?willing to make recommendation or clinical judgments based on this sort of data, I think he?s at risk to doing a disservice to his patients,? said Dr. Andrew Lee, director of the Proton Therapy Center at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. ?It?s like trying to read a license plate from 30 thousand feet up in the air.?
Lee, who was not involved in the new work, said that the study?s length - a year - wasn?t enough time to look at the full scope of side effects from either treatment. The study also failed to include side effects that didn?t require a hospital visit, and couldn?t say how long treatments lasted.
Proton therapy isn?t for everyone, both noted. Lee said the treatment was best for young healthy patients, while Yu said it is most useful for cancers in children or in sensitive areas where minimizing the radiation is critical.
Yu would not recommend it for prostate cancer.
?The cancer center next door or the radiation oncologist in the community will likely do just as good a job at treating prostate cancer with IMRT as a proton center three times out of the way,? Yu said.

Proton Versus Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer: Patterns of Care and Early Toxicity
Results
We identified 27,647 men; 553 (2%) received PRT and 27,094 (98%) received IMRT. Patients receiving PRT were younger, healthier, and from more affluent areas than patients receiving IMRT. Median Medicare reimbursement was $32,428 for PRT and $18,575 for IMRT. Although PRT was associated with a statistically significant reduction in genitourinary toxicity at 6 months compared with IMRT (5.9% vs 9.5%; odds ratio [OR] = 0.60, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.38 to 0.96, P = .03), at 12 months post-treatment there was no difference in genitourinary toxicity (18.8% vs 17.5%; OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 0.76 to 1.54, P = .66). There was no statistically significant difference in gastrointestinal or other toxicity at 6 months or 12 months post-treatment.
Conclusions
Although PRT is substantially more costly than IMRT, there was no difference in toxicity in a comprehensive cohort of Medicare beneficiaries with prostate cancer at 12 months post-treatment.

We get contemplative at the end of every year. Did we do everything we set out to do? Did we meet our goals? What were the best movies we?ve seen or books we?ve read?
Maybe our year-in-review helps us predict what?s coming in the new year, or at least think about how we?ll approach things differently.
Social business and customer service have certainly seen lots of moving and shaking in 2012. Here are some of the trends that may be foreshadowing the year to come.
Remember back in 2009 when ?social? was the new business buzzword? The world knew this was a revolution and everyone wanted to be a part of it. The only problem was that people didn?t quite know how to fit it into their budgets, how to track investments ? how to measure it.
This year marks major improvements toward wrapping numbers around social business. McKinsey?s study of the social economy exploded last summer, with predictions that the industry will add $1.3 TRILLION in annual revenue.
After years of trial and error, companies are learning where money is being wasted in social media and are modifying their course.
Stop blocking social media at work! Studies are proving the benefits of social, such as how collaboration tools are boosting productivity.
It?s safe to say that social business has grown up and, most likely, will continue to mature as technology laggards catch up.
With the variety of mobile devices (both smartphones and tablets) now available, the ubiquity of data access, and increasing reliance on information anywhere, mobile sales are exploding with no end in sight.
That means more online business, sales, and customer service is being tapped, adding extra pressure to operations internally and externally.
Businesses are scrambling to tap the benefits of mobile, but not without encountering challenges. IT professionals are learning the role of mobile within the enterprise ? no overnight task.? When it comes to customer experience, move it or lose it: 73% of mobile users feel companies don?t deserve their loyalty if their needs aren?t being met. Ouch.
When it comes to the future of mobile, it?s looking more and more interactive.
If a customer complains about a product or service and the business isn?t around to hear it? everyone else will be. Studies show that nearly half of all social media users (and that?s a lot) look to social media for customer service. This year has been all about gearing up on the strategies, tactics, and tools to give better customer experiences through social.
Analysts are predicting that internal collaboration tools will be essential to keeping up with customers in 2013. Many businesses are adopting social customer experience management software.
What?s more, we?re seeing more traditional CRM giants acquiring or integrating agile social capabilities from third parties into their software. Perhaps this is the beginning of making all business more social in 2013 and beyond!
What trends have you seen in 2012? What do you think 2013 has in store for social business?

Because people are always online and checking their emails, it?s a good idea to use marketing via email to get in touch with people that are interested in your business. If you are considering starting your email marketing campaign, this article will provide you with some advice that can help you start today.
Remember that your email list is meant to increase your business profits. This means that each email must make the readers close in terms of buying. This can be done in a few different ways, including providing information on new product launches, revealing new ways to use existing products, or offering discounts on popular products.
All images included in the messages should be tagged with Alt data. Alt tags will replace any picture that doesn?t load or isn?t allowed to. The tag should appropriately describe the missing image. Your links should also contain these tags.
Make sure your emails will grab your customers attention. This might require a bit of trial and error. If something is not working for you, try a different approach. Try a variety of techniques until you find those that work best for your business.
Do not send marketing emails to those who have not requested them. Anyone who receives an email they didn?t ask for will get angry and is likely to report you for spamming them. This is very bad for business and you may be blocked by certain Internet providers.
If your company has developed a branding practice prior to the start of your e-mail marketing program, then keep your future emails consistent with that established branding. Use the same color pattern you use regularly, while also including your company logo on each email communication you send out. Brand familiarity and recognition are an important key to successfully marketing any business.
Send emails with only text. While interesting and fun, images increase load times and can cause your message to be ignored. Many people will be viewing the email on slower connections, or connections with metered bandwidth, so keep that in mind. Try and focus more on the quality of your content rather than creating pretty images. Doing this makes it more likely that people will stick with you.
Sending an email to your list more than once every seven days is a bad idea. Most likely, your subscribers receive dozens of emails every day. Sending several emails a week can eventually result in people deleting what you send without even taking a proper look and ignoring your hard created content.
Add personalization into your emails. Look beyond just adding the name of your recipient to your message. Make use of all the information your customers have provided to you. Take the time to divide your mailing list into various groups that happen to share something in common. This will allow you to make adjustments to your email in order to tailor to each group.
It is vital to gain permission from everyone you are going to email before you send any out. Unwelcome emails soliciting goods or services are bothersome. If you send out unsolicited email, it could even hurt your company. Concentrate your efforts on marketing strategies that are well received.
When following up with your prospects, you should consider sending a follow-up email that includes a message about your products or services. Tell them about discounts or sales, and suggest items that they might be interested in based on their original purchase. You can conclude your email by offering a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Do not forget colors and your brand?s logo in your emails. Your subscribers are already familiar with your website and they are used to associating those colors, designs and logo with you. Making these e-mails look familiar will make them more likely to be read before deletion.
Make use of the subscription information you collect to make your customer?s shopping experience easier. If a customer uses an embedded link from an email you sent to get to your site, make it so that their subscription auto-fills onto the purchasing paperwork. This makes things simpler and increases the chance that they will make a purchase.
Don?t send emails that require images to present information. A lot of email clients do not display images right away. Your messages may look strange or be impossible for some people to read if the information depends too heavily on graphics. You should always present vital information in plain text, and make certain that all of your images utilize alt tags.
Make subscribing to your emails easy, but never pressure consumers to do so. Reassure customers that you won?t sell their email addresses, and point out the advantages of signing up. You need to have your customer?s information in order to be successful at e-mail marketing.
Marketing via email can be made more effective by giving your customers options. It is a good idea to allow subscribers to select the quantity of emails they will receive, along with the frequency at which these emails are sent. Any information provided by the subscriber should also be at their discretion. Giving control to the subscriber will make them feel more comfortable. They will be more likely to sign up.
Make sure you get permission from all customers whom you send correspondence to via email. By doing so, your gain customer trust, and protect your reputation. You may even be banned by some ISPs and this can severely impact your business in a negative way.
Make your emails customized. Tell them about special offers and discounts. Give them information about products they may be interested in based on purchases they?ve already made. There?s an old saying that it takes more time and money to get a new customer than to get a repeat customer, and that holds true for email marketing, as well.
This article includes a bunch of information you should be sure to remember. So, you?ll want to read this article a few times to ensure you retain all of the tips to help you reach your goals.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Shocked Indians on Saturday were mourning the death of a woman who was gang-raped and beaten on a bus in New Delhi nearly two weeks ago in an ordeal that galvanized people to demand greater protection for women from sexual violence.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred and that it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.
The victim "passed away peacefully" early Saturday at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of the hospital, said in a statement.
After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the Indian capital, the woman was brought Thursday to Mount Elizabeth, which specializes in multi-organ transplants. Loh said the woman had been in extremely critical condition since Thursday, and by late Friday her condition had taken a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating.
"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," Loh said. "She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."
The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were traveling on a bus in New Delhi after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman's body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.
Indian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with severe internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. She also suffered from a heart attack while in the hospital in New Delhi.
Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghavan told reporters that the scale of the injuries the woman suffered was "very grave" and in the end "proved too much."
He said arrangements were being made to take her body back to India later Saturday.
The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in the thousands for almost daily demonstrations.
As news of the victim's death reached New Delhi early Saturday, hundreds of policemen sealed off the high-security India Gate area, where the seat of India's government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to the president's palace, the prime minister's office and key defense, external affairs and home ministries.
The area had seen battles between protesters and police for days after the attack.
Ten metro stations in the vicinity also were closed Saturday, said Rajan Bhagat, the New Delhi police spokesman.
Police were allowing people to assemble at the Jantar Mantar and Ramlila grounds, the main areas allotted for protests in New Delhi, Bhagat said.
Mourners began gathering at Jantar Mantar to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.
Dipali, a working woman who uses one name, said the rape victim deserved justice. "I hope it never happens again to any girl," she said.
Dozens of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi marched silently to the bus stop from where the rape victim and her friend had boarded the bus on Dec. 16. They carried placards reading "She is not with us but her story must awaken us."
Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the woman's death was a sobering reminder of the vast tragedy of sexual violence in India.
"The outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated," Ganguly said.
Prime Minister Singh said he understood the angry reaction to the attack and that he hoped all Indians would work together to make appropriate changes.
"These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change," Singh said in a statement Saturday. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."
He said the government was examining the penalties for crimes such as rape "to enhance the safety and security of women."
"I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agendas to help us all reach the end that we all desire ? making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in," Singh said.
Mamta Sharma, head of the state-run National Commission for Women, said the "time has come for strict laws" to stop violence against women. "The society has to change its mindset to end crimes against women," she said.
The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, which forces them to keep quiet and not report it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Also, police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.
Indian attitudes toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen provocative.
On Friday, Abhijit Mukherjee, a national lawmaker and the son of India's president, apologized for calling the protesters "highly dented and painted" women who go from discos to demonstrations.
"I tender my unconditional apology to all the people whose sentiments got hurt," he told NDTV news.
Several Indian celebrities reacted with sadness Saturday over the woman's death. Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, "Her body has passed away, but her soul shall forever stir our hearts."
Separately, authorities in Punjab state took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.
State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were only arrested Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.
"This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously," said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.
The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.
Authorities in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh also suspended a police officer on accusations he refused to register a rape complaint from a woman who said she had been attacked by a driver.

Red wine, particularly the antioxidants in red wine, house a number of benefits and that is a fact that is widely ignored owing to be member of the alcoholic family. The researchers at the Harvard Medical School have established that the antioxidants in red wine have anti-aging properties and that it may protect from binding diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. Furthermore, researchers from the University of Barcelona have concluded that red wine may help prevent a person from sunburns and scientists belonging to the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine suggest that red wine may help prevent brain damage after a stroke.
However, recent research has found out that resveratrol present in red wine may not improve sensitivity to insulin in obese men. Even though the subject brewed interest and gained support in the some initial animal trials, a later trial did not coincide with the line of research.
Insulin sensitivity refers to how well the body makes use of the hormone insulin. The study was conducted on 24 obese men who were otherwise healthy and were made to intake 1500mg of resveratrol (similar to red wine supplements) daily for four weeks as opposed to a group of men who were given an inactive placebo for the same amount of time. The study found out that there was no difference in insulin sensitivity in between the two groups of men along with no changes in blood pressure, levels of triglycerides and other fats, and other heart health related factors. ?Hence, red wine supplements have little impact on obesity in men and cannot compensate for unhealthy living.
The study was published on an online journal called Diabetes by Dr. Morten Poulsen at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, who led the study.
Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association said, "People who drink red wine and do so in moderation may have healthy lifestyles that may allow them to live longer and decrease their insulin sensitivity, but putting it into a pill doesn't solve the problem for people who live unhealthy lives, like the men in the study," Fonseca said. "I think some of the initial animal studies on resveratrol were hyped far more than they should have been and this study should put all of that to rest."
The study demonstrated that people who are at a risk for diabetes must take preventative measures and get screened for the disease, especially if these people are over the age of 45 and if they are younger and overweight, then too must they get screened just to be on the safe side. The scientists suggest that obese individuals should aim at gradually reducing their risk of diabetes by trying to lose weight by 5% to 10% off their current body weight by consuming a decreased calorie intake and exercising for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week.
However, these researchers do not completely deny the benefits of red wine supplements and accept the benefits of alcohol, stating that the compounds present in red wine may have some effectiveness in terms of other benefits as mentioned right at the introduction of the article.

In temperate regions, the influenza virus fares best when the weather is dry. Karen Hopkin reports.

Cases of the flu peak in winter in the U.S. But why? A new study suggests it?s not the heat, but the humidity. Or lack thereof. Because in temperate regions, the influenza virus fares best when the weather is dry. That?s according to work published in the journal PLoS One. [Wan Yang, Subbiah Elankumaran and Linsey C. Marr, Relationship between Humidity and Influenza A Viability in Droplets and Implications for Influenza?s Seasonality]
Scientists have long debated why flu erupts when the days grow chilly. Is it that we spend more time cooped up together indoors? Or is there something about the virus that likes it cold and dry? To find out, researchers suspended influenza virus in a solution that mimics human mucus. They incubated this infectious soup at different humidities and measured viral survival.
And they found that at low humidity, the fake mucus dries up and the virus does just fine. But when the humidity tops 50%, the droplets only partially evaporate, leaving behind a solution that?s too salty for the virus to thrive.
Interestingly, the virus does well again when the humidity reaches 100 percent, evaporation stops and the salinity of the mucus bath is juuust right. That could explain why the flu prefers to hit the tropics in rainy season. And why you should always keep your nose clean, but moist.

An employee of the Israeli Antiquities Authority displays figurines at Tel Motza archaeological site on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
By Alan Boyle
Archaeologists have uncovered a 2,750-year-old temple near Jerusalem,?along with pottery and clay figurines that suggest the site was the home base for a ritual cult, the Israeli Antiquities Authority said Wednesday.
The discovery was made during excavations at the Tel Motza archaeological site, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of Jerusalem, during preparations for work on a new section of Israeli's Highway 1, the agency said in a statement.
"The ritual building at Tel Motza is an unusual and striking find, in light of the fact that there are hardly any remains of ritual buildings of the period in Judaea at the time of the First Temple," excavation directors Anna Eirikh, Hamoudi Khalaily and Shua Kisilevitz were quoted as saying in the statement.
The Bible says the First Temple was built in Jerusalem?by Solomon, son of King David, and archaeologists estimate that construction was?undertaken?in the 10th century B.C. The excavation's directors say the Tel Motza temple must have been active in an era "prior to the religious reforms throughout the kingdom at the end of the monarchic period (at the time of Hezekiah and Isaiah), which abolished all ritual sites, concentrating ritual practices solely at the Temple in Jerusalem."
Tel Motza was thought to be associated with the ancient settlement called "Mozah" in the Book of Joshua. During previous work, archaeologists uncovered a large structure with storehouses and a number of silos. They said that structure might have served as a storage facility for Jerusalem's grain supplies.

An overhead view shows the Tel Motza archaeological site.
The newly discovered structure has massive walls and a wide, east-facing entrance, conforming to the tradition of temple construction at the time, the site directors said. "The rays of the sun rising in the east would have illuminated the object placed inside the temple first, symbolizing the divine presence within," they said.
Inside the temple, archaeologists found what appeared to be a square altar, with a cache of ritual items nearby. Those items included fragments of pottery chalices, decorated ritual pedestals and two types of pottery figurines. Some of the figurines?represented animals???mainly horses in harnesses? while others were?humanlike heads with curling hair and flat headdresses. Such figurines hint at the influence of Philistine coastal culture.
"The find of the sacred structure, together with the accompanying cache of sacred vessels, and especially the significant coastal influence evident in the anthropomorphic figurines, still require extensive research," the directors said.

(CNN) ? Russia?s upper house of parliament has approved a controversial measure banning adoption of Russian children by U.S. families, Russian media reported Wednesday.
The legislation now goes to President Vladimir Putin to be signed into law, the semiofficial RIA-Novosti news agency said.
Russia is one of the top countries of origin for international adoptions in the United States. The legislation could affect hundreds of American families seeking to adopt Russian children.
The bill also bars any political activities by nongovernmental organizations receiving funding from the United States, if such activities could affect Russian interests, the news agency said.
The legislation also imposes sanctions against U.S. officials thought to have violated human rights.
The vote in the Federation Council, Russia?s upper house, was unanimous, but the Foreign Ministry said it may seek to challenge the bill if it is signed by Putin as expected in coming days.
Lawmakers in the State Duma, Russia?s lower house of parliament, adopted the bill last week.
The move by Russian politicians is widely seen as retaliation for a law that U.S. President Barack Obama signed on December 14. That bill, called the Magnitsky Act, imposes U.S. travel and financial restrictions on human rights abusers in Russia.
?The United States is concerned by measures in the bill passed in the Russian Duma today that, if it becomes law, would halt inter-country adoptions between the United States and Russia and would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners,? U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said last week.
The Magnitsky Act is named in honor of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who uncovered the largest tax fraud in the country?s history in the form of rebates claimed by government officials who stole money from the state. Magnitsky died in 2009 after a year in a Moscow detention center, apparently beaten to death.
The Russian bill?s implementation would nullify a recent agreement between the United States and Russia in which the countries agreed to additional safeguards to protect children and parties involved in inter-country adoptions.
?American families have welcomed more than 60,000 Russian children into American homes over the past 20 years,? Ventrell said last week. ?Just last month we implemented a bilateral adoptions agreement with Russia to improve safeguards for adopted children and their families. If Russian officials have concerns about the implementation of this agreement, we stand ready to work with them to improve it and remain committed to supporting inter-country adoptions between our two countries.?
Only China has more adoptions to the United States than Russia.
Backers of the Russian bill said American adoptive parents have been abusive, citing 19 deaths of Russian children by their foster parents since the 1990s, according to local media.
In 2010, an American woman caused outrage after she sent her adopted son back to Russia alone on a one-way flight, saying the boy, then 7, had violent episodes that made her family fear for its safety.
Groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch had urged lawmakers to reject the bill.
?This bill hits back at Russia?s most vulnerable children and could deprive them of the loving families they desperately need,? Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said last week.
John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International?s Europe and Central Asia program director, has said, ?this bill is frankly a childish response to the Magnitsky Act.?

The perception of schools as sanctuaries from violence has been "blown up" by recent events and some believe it's time for educators to literally take the situation into their own hands and carry guns.
"We've had this unwritten code, even among criminals, that schools are off limits. Those are our kids. You don't mess with that," Utah Shooting Sports Council (USSC) Chairman Clark Aposhian told ABCNews.com today.
"That perception has been blown away now," he said. "It's been shattered and if there's one thing that parents across the country are united on, it's that they are committed to and serious about protecting their kids."
Aposhian spoke shortly before opening a weapons training class for teachers and school employees that drew more than 200 Utah educators organized by the USSC, a leading gun lobby group that believes that teachers should be able to fight back when faced with an armed intruder.
"One firearm in the hands of one teacher could have made the difference at Sandy Hook or Columbine, but they weren't allowed to carry in those schools," Aposhian said.
The USSC is waiving its normal $50 training fee today for teachers who wish to attend. Aposhian said the 200 person course was filled to capacity and said he plans on holding another session for people he may have to turn away today.
INFOGRAPHIC: Gun in America: By The Numbers
"We trust these teachers to be with our kids for 8 to 10 hours a day every day," Aposhian said. "I don't think it's a far reach to think that we could think that they would act responsibly and with decorum in protecting their own lives and the lives of the kids under their care."
The idea of armed teachers has been part of a fiery debate on gun control following the rampage at Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six adults dead on Dec. 14.
Utah is one of only a handful of states, including Oregon, Hawaii and New Hampshire, that allow people to carry licensed concealed weapons into public schools. It is not known how many Utah teachers carry guns in public schools because the records are not public.
But Aposhian said that he tells detractors that Utah has not had any school shootings or accidental shootings in the approximately 12 years the law has been in effect.
In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Association is launching a pilot armed teacher training program in which 24 teachers will be selected to attend a three-day training class.
Arizona's Attorney General Tom Horne has proposed a state law amendment that would allow one educator in each school to carry a gun.
During today's six-hour training session, the educators will be taught about gun safety, loading and unloading, manipulating the firearm, how to clear malfunctions, use of force laws and state and federal firearm laws.
The training sessions normally draw about 15 to 20 people, Aposhian said, but many of the teachers who have signed up for today have expressed strong feelings about attending the class.
"I think it runs the gamut from passive desire to get a permit because they thought about it here and there to a fervor given the recent events," Aposhian said. "Perhaps they've had an epiphany of sorts and realized that that sanctuary they work in, or at least the perceived sanctuary, isn't all that safe."
The Utah State Board of Education Chair Debra Roberts released the following statement today on the matter:
"The Utah State Board of Education expresses sympathy to all involved in the recent school shooting in Connecticut. In the face of this terrible tragedy, as schools move forward in taking measures to ensure the safety of students and school personnel, we urge caution and thoughtful consideration."
The statement noted that its schools have emergency plans to handle such situations.
Carol Lear, the board's director of school law and legislation, was more blunt about Aposhian's gun training, telling the Associated Press, "It's a terrible idea...It's a horrible, no-good, rotten idea."
The gun rights advocacy group insists that teachers are the first responders and last line of defense in the critical first minutes of a situation when law enforcement is still on their way.
"Law enforcement show up with lots of weapons, lots of manpower, lots of equipment. The only problem is you can't make up for being there too late with more guns," Aposhian said. "You can mitigate the situation by having even one gun there at the right time in the hands of people who actually are responding first, which would be the teachers, the principals, the staff and the faculty."
The group insists that they are not arming teachers or suggesting they take to the hallways in search for the shooter. They expect educators to follow school lockdown procedures and insist the use of a weapon would be a last resort to protect themselves and their students.
Aposhian said he recognizes that there are many options for dealing with the problem of school shootings, but he believes that arming adults in schools is a necessary component of any viable option.
"You could put armed guards in the school if that's an option, but the option of responding to an active shooter by hiding behind a desk? That is clearly not a good option anymore," he said.
