The ballad of the flexible budget

It's essential you allow yourself to be flexible with your budget, Hamm says. Recognizing that some portions of your budget (like mortgage payments) should be fixed while others (like food) change from month to month can save you from the stress of trying to stick to a rigid budget.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / July 9, 2013

Credit cards stick out of a wallet. It's important to set a budget that gives you the flexibility of spending more or less on certain items like food and energy according to your needs, Hamm says.

There are a lot of different techniques for budgeting out there. There?s the standard ?write out a budget? method presented in a ton of personal finance books. There?s the ?envelope? method. There?s the electronic ?You Need a Budget? method.

I?m not going to get into the ins and outs of each type of budget, except to say that they have a few big things in common.

The big one is that they all push you to compartmentalize your money into groups so that you can keep careful track of where your money is going.

They want you to allot a certain amount to your energy bill. They want you to allocate a certain amount to your monthly food spending. They want you to allocate a certain amount to your mortgage. You get the idea.

The idea behind this is that you should strive to set aside enough each month to ensure that each particular area of your life is covered. So, if you have a $1,200 mortgage payment each month, then $1,200 of your monthly income should be untouchable except for your mortgage payment. If you spend $800 on your family?s food each month, then $800 of your monthly income should be untouchable except for food.

Budgeting really does make a lot of sense. Except when it doesn?t.

See, while some of your budgetary items are extremely fixed ? like your mortgage payment ? others are not. Your food spending varies depending on whether you run out of staples, whether you have guests, and many other factors. Your energy spending varies depending upon the season. Your entertainment and hobby spending can vary a lot depending on your social calendar.

Most budgeting advice encourages you to assess this number based on your recent spending. They?ll tell you to take your food receipts for the last month, trim them by 10% or so, and use that as your food budget for the month. They?ll tell you to look at your last few energy bills, average them, and use that for your energy budget.

This doesn?t work.

You?re going to have a month where it?s freezing outside and you use a ton of energy. You?re going to have a month where family members invade like locusts and your food budget goes to the moon. You?re going to have a month where you end up making too many phone calls and your cell phone budget is too low.

You absolutely must have flexibility in your budget. A rigid budget doesn?t reflect real life.

I?ve been experimenting with budgets for our family recently, and I?ve found that my best solution to the flexible budget problem is really simple.

All I do is add a new line item to my budget called ?Flex.? That ?Flex? section is equal to 10% of the rest of my entire budget. So, if all of my other budget line items add up to $3,000, the ?flex? item is $300.

The entire purpose of that ?flex? section is to make sure that, if I go overboard on a particular budget area for a good reason, it?s not panic time. The ?flex? section will pick it up.

At the end of a month, if I still have money in the ?flex? section, I carry it forward to the next month. I also dump any extra money from other budget categories into ?flex? for the next month.

If ?flex? ever totals more than 25% of my budget, I use the extra for saving for a big long-term goal, like our next house. Alternately, you could use it for additional hobby or entertainment spending that month. So far, it?s gotten close to 25%, but it?s never quite made it.

On the other hand, ?flex? has made it a lot easier to stick to a strict budget. I know that if I go over a little bit on food spending one month, it?s not a panic situation. Instead, I know that ?flex? will cover it.

It?s vital to note, however, that any time you do go over in a category, you should spend some time reassessing that category. Should you be budgeting more there? Or was this a rare exception for a good reason that won?t regularly be repeated?

If you?re struggling with budgeting, adding ?flex? to your budget can make the whole process much easier. It might put a little squeeze on some of the more ?fun? areas of your budget, like hobby and entertainment spending, but your reward for that is a lot less stress and a lot more flexibility.

Union bosses tell Ed Miliband: We'll block your new funding plan for Labout party

Ed Miliband today dismissed threats by trade union leaders to block his radical plan to reshape the relationship between Labour and its union founders.

The Labour leader said he was determined to force through "as soon as possible" a change under which union members would "opt in" to paying ?3 a year to the party rather than the present system under which they "opt out" if they do not wish to fund Labour.? ?I definitely want these changes agreed before the [2015] general election,? he said. ?No one should be in any doubt about my determination to get this done.?

Answering questions after a keynote speech in London, Mr Miliband hinted that Labour could turn down the unions? money unless their affiliation fees, which total ?8m annually, were collected in the way he proposes. He pointed out that unions decide whether to support the party financially ? and Labour decided whether to accept their money.

Asked if he would resign if he failed to secure his reforms, Mr Miliband said: ?We are going to get these changes.? I am absolutely determined.? These changes are necessary, they are the right thing to do. We are going to make them happen.?? He admitted the proposal would have ?massive financial implications? but insisted he would ?seize the moment?.

A review of the Labour-union link will he headed by Lord Collins, the party?s former general secretary, who is also a former official with Unite, the union which sparked the shake-up by alleged malpractice in trying to install its favoured candidate as Labour?s standard-bearer in Falkirk at the general election. The review will also look at the ?wider implications? of the proposed change, including the unions? 50 per cent share of the vote at Labour?s annual conference and 33 per cent share of the electoral college which chooses the party leader.

Mr Miliband denied the changes were weak, citing support for them from Tony Blair, who earlier praised the Labour leader for what he called ?a real act of leadership.? The former Prime Minister admitted that he should have introduced the same reforms when he was party leader, saying: ?I think this is a defining moment, and I think it's bold and it's strong.?? He added: "It's important not only in its own terms, because he's carrying through a process for reform in the Labour Party that's long overdue?.and I think this is also very important for the country - is that he's sending a very strong message to the country that in the end he'll do what's right for all the country and not simply for one section of it.?

But Billy Hayes, general secretary of the CWU postal workers? union, dismissed the proposal as ?a very old fashioned idea.? Asked whether he could stop Mr Miliband pushing it? through, he replied: "Well, let's see. Let's just see what happens in the process." He added: "We are going to make sure our voice is heard. We live in a democratic society and as I understand it we are entitled to have our say in the party."

Len McCluskey, the leader of Unite,? was more conciliatory, saying his union was ?more than happy? to engage in talks about the Miliband plan. ?He said: ?"It was certainly a bold and brave speech, and it may well be a historic one if Ed's vision comes to fruition.? He seemed to be saying that he wanted to see tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of ordinary trade unionists actively playing an active role within the?Labour?Party. That's something I very much welcome.

However, before the speech, Mr McCluskey threatened to block the change. He said that it would ?require?Labour?to unite with the Tories to change the law, would debilitate the unions' ability to speak for their members and further undermine their status as voluntary, and self-governing, organisations.

Can't stop, won't stop: PRX introduces an app for unending audio ...

prxremixPRX is proposing a new model for what a radio station (or a ?radio? ?station?) can be with a new app that offers up pieces from shows you like, some from a few you may not recognize, and then puts the whole thing on shuffle.

PRX Remix is a curated, unending stream of radio stories, podcasts, interviews, and more material collected from programs like The Moth, WTF with Marc Maron, and Slate?s Gabfests among others. Remix has existed online and as an actual format for terrestrial and satellite radio for some time, but as of today, it?s also all jammed into an app for your iPhone or Android, following the broad shift toward mobile devices as where audio gets consumed.

What PRX Remix does is try to take advantage of the wealth of audio storytelling options the Internet has afforded, said PRX CEO Jake Shapiro. ?For the story hungry, there?s pretty much a bottomless appetite for really good stuff,? said Shapiro. But many of those stories don?t always fit perfectly into half-hour or hour-long slots on your local public radio station ??and on many stations, many of those those timeslots have been spoken for by the same set of shows for years or decades.

As a technology producer for public media, PRX has helped develop apps for programs like Radiolab and This American Life. As a distributor, they?ve put programs like The Moth and Snap Judgment in front of larger audiences. One reason it?s great time to be a fan of audio storytelling now is the variety, Shapiro said: Traditional players in public media continue to produce new stories and shows, while the Internet has opened up a universe of new independent players.

For a growing number of people, their audio diet is representative of that, with a mix of radio programs and podcasts, news and features. In that scenario, the biggest question becomes what to listen to next. PRX Remix is one answer to that. ?It?s a way to bring together what we?ve been learning in building mobile apps for media companies the last couple of years and apply it to something really close to our heart,? Shapiro said.

While the app is rich in stories, it?s short on features ? it?s mostly one big play button. Shapiro said that was a conscious choice in building the app. The main goal is to introduce people to new stories, give them ways to remember them, and share them with others. The app?s functionality allows users the ability to skip stories and also keep track of what they?ve listened to. One big benefit for the subway-riding crowd: The app will load up to an hour?s worth of audio for when you find yourself offline.

People on their phones represent a pretty desirable demographic to people in the audio business. As our phones continue to become our replacement for everything, audio works well on mobile is because the devices feel like a companion, Shapiro said. As our devices become more personalized and attuned to our habits, users want an experience that knows what they like but can also expose them to something new.

?The reality is there?s less and less patience for the mediocre or boring or pointless,? said Shapiro. ?Part of the value of the Remix app is we?ve done a lot of distilling ahead of time, but included in that are a lot of surprises.?

Serendipity can be a hard quality to replicate. PRX producer Roman Mars oversees remix and selects which stories are fed into the remix app. (You may know him better as the host of the wonderful 99% Invisible, a podcast/radio show about design.) While the pieces are selected by a human, the order and sorting is done at random. Each week, PRX adds more to the mix. Shapiro said future versions of the app could incorporate an algorithm that learns from users? listening habits.

This is not the first attempt to make a Pandora for public media. In 2011, as an experiment, NPR showed off the first iteration of its Infinite Player, a customizable web app that lets listeners create an endless stream of radio content ? although, unlike Remix, its audio is mostly drawn from flagship NPR shows. This spring, NPR began beta testing a mobile-friendly version of the app for iPhone users.

The most significant difference between Remix and the Infinite Player is the audio sources they draw on. Infinite Player, as an NPR project, draws primarily on NPR?s flagship shows; in a runthrough this morning, its first 10 pieces came from Morning Edition (6), Weekend Edition Saturday (1), and NPR?s top-of-the-hour newscasts (3).

The first 10 pieces to show up in a similar runthrough of Remix came from a very different mix of sources: The Memory Palace (a short reflection on the Ben Franklin Death Ray!), The Kitchen Sisters (on the birth of the Frito), Sound Portraits? The Ground We Lived On (about the journalist Adrian Nicole LeBlanc), a 99% Invisible piece on San Francisco concrete, a piece called Talk to Me About Love on a sibling relationship, a piece from Radio Diaries, one from Snap Judgment, a short documentary piece from the Third Coast International Audio Festival, something called Beep Beep, and a discussion of Fiona Apple?s last album from Sound Opinions. A very different mix.

While PRX Remix is a clear bet on mobile devices, Shapiro said its important to not lose sight of the fact that terrestrial radio still commands a large audience. Even as PRX debuts the app, Remix continues to expand into new public radio stations.

As technology reshapes how radio and audio content is delivered, it?s also changing formats for storytelling, Shaprio said. Something like PRX Remix embraces the value of narrative, feature pieces, and other stories that can wind up ?on the margins of the news format,? Shapiro said. ?What Remix is establishing is a new format: It?s the story-driven audio journalism format,? he said.

The life of the child bride bin Laden's courier

Maryam was just 14 when her father arranged for her to marry Ibrahim Saeed Ahmed, the man who would become the al Qaeda courier of Zero Dark Thirty fame and unwittingly lead the Americans to Osama bin Laden.

?At the time, she had no idea her husband, Ibrahim, was a mujahid,? says the final report of a Pakistani commission that found her to be its most informative witness in its investigation into the 2011 raid at Abbottabad.

She was only 15 when a car she was in was pulled over by a Pakistani cop who apparently did not imagine any more than she did that the tall, clean-shaven man riding with her and her husband was bin Laden.

She was no more than 16 when she saw a TV news item about the 2003 arrest of Khalid Sheikh Muhammad and realized he and his family had just been her houseguests for two weeks.

She still did not know the identity of the tall, clean-shaven man until she finally confronted her husband after a decade of deception and demanded to know the full truth about him and his friends.

That was shortly before the fateful raid, in which her husband was killed along with bin Laden. Maryam was shot in the face, but she survived, now 24 and with four children. She had been in the custody of the Pakistani intelligence for five months when she was questioned by the commission.

Her account, which a commission report leaked this week to Al Jazeera?terms ?generally credible,? began with her arranged marriage in 2001 to the son of a longtime friend of her father. The couple traveled from their native Shangla district to Karachi, where they enjoyed a Walima dinner, or wedding banquet, at the home of a woman whom Maryam only knew as a native of Baluchistan province.

Not long afterward came the world-shaking news of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Maryam would tell investigators that her husband was often traveling during this period, saying he had business in Kuwait. She went back to Shangla for a brief time and then returned to Karachi, where she was joined by Ibrahim. He introduced her to a young woman named Amal, who had a baby daughter.

Ibrahim told Maryam that Amal was the wife of a friend and was having ?some problems with her passport.? He explained that they would all be flying from Karachi to Peshawar, where he hoped to rectify the passport troubles. They then traveled to Swat, where they were joined by three men, one a driver, another clad in a police uniform, and a third ?a clean-shaven Arab.?

?All she noticed was that the clean-shaven man was very tall,? the commission reports.

In Swat, they all settled into what she would describe as a beautiful house with a river running behind it and beyond that a road eventually leading to her childhood home. The others remained so reserved and close-mouthed that Maryam was greatly surprised when Amal became pregnant after they had been in Swat for six months.

?Only then did Maryam realize that Amal was the wife of the tall clean-shaven Arab,? the commission says. ?Her husband had discouraged her from being inquisitive.?

The report adds, ?Maryam of course had no occasion to speak to the tall Arab.?

A small town with a bazaar was about a half hour away, and they were all heading there when a policeman stopped them for speeding. The clean-shaven man sat silent as Maryam?s husband hopped out.

?Her husband very quickly sorted out the matter with the policeman and they drove on,? the commission?s report says.

The group in the house came to include Ibrahim?s brother, Abrar, who married a woman named Bushra. There were no other visitors save for a man who came for a fortnight with his wife and seven children. Maryam was introduced to him as ?Hafeez.? She recognized the wife as the woman who had hosted her wedding banquet in Karachi.

A month after ?Hafeez? and his family departed, Maryam saw his face in an Al Jazeera news report about the arrest in Karachi of the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

?She asked her husband about him and he told her he was a great mujahid whose name was actually Khalid Sheikh Muhammed,? the commission reports. ?Ibrahim was extremely upset about his arrest.?

Three days later, Ibrahim and the tall Arab left Swat. Ibrahim returned after two days and hired a bus. He drove Maryam, his brother, and Bushra, along with Amal and the children, to Peshawar.

?[Maryam] began to realize that her husband was a mujahid of al Qaeda, though apparently she did not guess the identity of the husband of Amal,? the report says. ?She tried to probe Ibrahim, but he firmly told her not to press him for details and not to be too curious.?

From there, they went to Haripur, where they were joined by the tall Arab, along with a number of other women and a young man. The group resided there for two years in a large house.

?Amal twice gave birth,? the report notes.

On both occasions, Abrar and Bushra took Amal to a private clinic as an outpatient. The obstetrician, a woman, was told that Amal was deaf and mute.

There were no visitors. Ibrahim and Abrar seldom spent a night away from the tall Arab. The men ate together, sharing the same food, and whiled away their time watching TV, mainly Al Jazeera, via a satellite dish. They abstained from using their cellphones. One of the two brothers would travel as far as Peshawar or even Rawalpindi to use a pay phone.

In 2005, they all moved to Abbottabad and settled into a walled compound for the next six years. The tall Arab and Amal, along with several other women and a young man, took the upper floors of the main house. Abrar and Bushra took the first floor. Maryam and Ibrahim occupied an annex building along with their four children, the oldest of whom in early 2011 was 9-year-old Rahma.

?One day, [Rahma] asked her father why ?the uncle who lives upstairs? in the main house never went to the bazaar,? the report says. ?Ibrahim invented a story that he was too poor to go out and buy anything.?

From then on, Rahma referred to the man as ?Miskin Kaka,? or ?Poor Uncle.? She was visiting the main house for school lessons taught by one of the women when she happened to encounter the tall man in a staircase. She and her siblings and their mother were immediately banned from the main house. They had no further interaction with the residents of the upper floors. Ibrahim homeschooled the couple?s kids.

Females were initially allowed to watch TV as long as even those as young as 3 covered their faces whenever a male appeared on screen. The fateful raid was five months away on the day a dutifully veiled Rahma saw someone familiar on Al Jazeera.

?A picture of Osama bin Laden came on the screen and Rahma immediately recognized him as her Miskin Kaka, who lived upstairs in the main house,? the report says. ?Ibrahim in a state of panic stopped his family from watching TV.?

His wife had reached a limit.

?Maryam demanded an explanation as well as the real identity of the so-called Miskin Kaka who was always referred to as the Sheikh,? the report says. ?He told her it was none of her business but she complained he did not trust her and stopped talking to him.?

The dynamics of the mujahid marriage proved not so different from that of many others.

?Ibrahim at last confessed to Maryam that their daughter was right,? the report continues. ?Miskin Kaka was none other than Osama bin Laden.?

Lest anyone feel unduly sorry for Maryam, she apparently did not express any shock or revulsion that her husband had been involved in the murder of thousands of innocents in defiance of all responsible Muslim teaching.

?Maryam asked Ibrahim how had he taken upon himself such a large responsibility to serve and protect such a wanted man,? the report says. ?Ibrahim said it was the will of Allah that he should have this mission.?

She told him she was not frightened at the prospect of him becoming a martyr.

?But she did fear his arrest and torture,? the report goes on. ?She would rather he was martyred than captured.?

Ibrahim seems to have sought to placate her.

?Ibrahim apparently said he would be soon be relieved of his current responsibilities and get some property in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere to compensate him for his services,? the report says.

Prior to the ban from the main house, Maryam and her children had been allowed to visit the women there once a month for 10 or 15 minutes. She now came to understand that the two older women where with Amal were bin Laden?s older wives. The two younger women were his daughters. There were also two of his sons, one an adult, the other a toddler.

Maryam further learned that her husband had practically grown up with Khalid Sheikh Muhammad in Kuwait and that the two were as close as brothers. That explained how her wedding dinner came to be in the home of the self-described mastermind of 9/11.

What Maryam did not know was that the CIA was zeroing in on her husband as bin Laden?s link to the outside world. The agents at first only identified him by his jihad name, Ibrahim al-Kuwaiti. They now learned that his real name was Ibrahim Saeed Ahmed and managed to pinpoint him as he made one of his payphone calls. They then tracked him to the compound.

The CIA still wanted to confirm bin Laden was there before risking a strike so deep inside Pakistan and so near its military academy. Bin Laden did not make it easier by never venturing beyond a small walled-in area adjacent to the main house and even then wearing a cowboy hat to thwart overhead surveillance.

In April, Maryam visited Shangla for 17 days, telling her family that she had been in Kuwait and supporting the fiction by bringing gifts she said were from there. She returned to Abbottabad on April 28.

On May 1, Maryam went to bed at 10 p.m. She was awakened around midnight by what the report describes as ?a noise of a magnitude she had never heard before.?

The eldest child, Rahma, was terrified and Ibrahim went to calm her and the other children. The cellphone he never used rang. He answered and asked if it was his brother calling, but he got no response.

?Abrar, I cannot hear you, I am coming,? he said, by his wife?s account.

At that moment, a knock came at the door.

?Abrar, is that you?? Ibrahim asked.

Ibrahim was opening the door when he was shot with a silencer-equipped weapon. He fell mortally wounded, his feet happening to close the door he had just opened.

Maryam felt a bullet graze her cheek and teeth. She was also hit in the right shoulder and went down. One of the younger children ran up to her.

?Mother, don?t die. If you die, what shall we do?? the child reportedly said.

A voice commanded her in Arabic to open the door.

?You have killed my husband and now only my children and I are in the room,? she responded, by her account.

The order came again, in Arabic and Urdu, along with a warning that otherwise access would be achieved with explosives. Maryam dragged herself over and complied.

The Navy SEALS entered and searched her, in her version slapping her when she resisted. She says that she cursed them, telling them in Arabic, ?God is great against you.?

Maryam was ordered to sit outside with her children. The surviving women in the main house would tell the commission of bin Laden?s last moments, saying he was reaching for his weapon. Maryam?s brother-in-law, Abrar, and sister-in-law, Bushra, also were killed along with bin Laden?s older son Khalid. None of the dozen children were hurt, and the SEALs made sure to move them to a far corner of the compound before destroying their crashed helicopter with a blast whose concussion shattered the buildings? windows.

The surviving helicopter carried away the SEALs along with bin Laden?s body, computer hard drives, and a purse containing his will. His oldest wife, Khairiyyah, would say she had read it but would refuse to divulge its contents.

?Other reports suggested that the will said his children should not seek the leadership of al Qaeda,? the commission says.

Pakistani police and military arrived. An ambulance came to take Maryam to a hospital. She first went back into the annex where Ibrahim lay dead. She kissed the forehead of the man she had married a decade before, when she was just 14.

What she could not have known but she should now consider and we should all remember is that the same SEALS who killed her husband saved her children, along with the other kids who were there. That includes the 3-year-old, Hussein, who had been sleeping in bin Laden?s room. The boy is the son of the youngest wife. It was her turn that night to be with his father.

The CIA, including the agent who is made a hero in Zero Dark Thirty, wanted to just ?push the easy button? and bomb the compound, even though that would have meant killing the kids who were clearly visible in the drone surveillance video.

The SEALs prevailed and at great risk to themselves saved us from also killing a bunch of youngsters when we finally brought justice to bin Laden.

We now learn from Maryam?s account that he should have been caught years before in the way of so many other common criminals, in a routine traffic stop.

Michael Beller: Fantasy baseball Waiver Wire -- The Dodgers noticed Ricky Nolasco's strong season

Ricky Nolasco, who was traded to the Dodgers July 7, has a 3.85 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 18 starts.

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Fantasy owners have seemed to miss something that the Dodgers' front office noticed: Ricky Nolasco is having a pretty good season. That's part of the reason why Miami traded him to L.A. for three prospects in one of the first significant trades of the season. He can also be a great pickup for fantasy owners looking for help in their rotations.

MACK: Derek Jeter, among other big names, returning to the lineup after the All-Star break

Nolasco (available in 72 percent of Yahoo leagues, 36 percent of CBS leagues, and 92 percent of ESPN leagues) earned his way out of Miami by making 18 starts with very good results this season. In 112.1 innings, he posted a 3.85 ERA, 3.52 FIP and 1.22 WHIP, all of which are career bests since 2009 or earlier. He has 90 strikeouts against just 25 non-intentional walks, and that 3.6 K/BB ratio would be his best in the last three seasons.

We don't have any reason to believe Nolasco is getting lucky, either. He has a .299 BABIP and 72.5 percent strand rate, both comfortably within league-average range. His velocity has remained consistent since 2010, and there isn't a ton of worry about wear and tear, since Nolasco has thrown at least 185 innings in four of the last five seasons. Now, he'll get to pitch roughly half his games in pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium. Add it all up, and Nolasco can be a great acquisition on the cheap for any fantasy owner who could use another starter.

Let's get to the rest of the waiver wire.

? 1B/OF Logan Morrison, Miami Marlins (84, 58, 81): Morrison missed the first eight weeks of the season, but he has made the most of his time on the field. In 19 games, he's hitting .318/.400/.621 with four homers and 10 RBI. Obviously it's way too early to draw any meaningful conclusions from his peripheral stats, but you have to like that his K-rate is down at 13.3 percent while his walk rate is 12 percent. Morrison essentially lost all of last year to injury, but remember that he started the year as one of the fantasy community's favorite sleepers. He belted 23 homers in 525 plate appearances back in 2011, and he's certainly capable of matching that rate again. He's definitely worth a shot in most mixed leagues.

? SS Andrelton Simmons, Atlanta Braves (58, 26, 37): Simmons is hot of late, raising his slash line from .242/.276/.337 to .251/.287/.357 in the last three weeks. He has been especially hot in July, hitting .409/.417/.727 with two homers and six RBI. Simmons is another guy whose season has been compromised by injury, but he can be a useful hitter in the rate and run categories when healthy. He also has a .257 BABIP despite respectable line-drive and ground-ball rates. Given that he plays a shallow position, he should probably be owned in deeper mixed leagues.

? OF Alfonso Soriano, Chicago Cubs (47, 40, 13): Soriano started one of his trademark hot streaks 10 games ago, which is not a moment too soon for the Cubs; they would love for him to entice an American League team into making him their DH for the last two months of the season. Since June 23, Soriano is 14-for-43 with five homers and 13 RBI. Everyone knows Soriano won't remain this hot forever, but he's the kind of guy who can really help when he's swinging the bat the way he is right now. If you're looking for short-term outfield help, Soriano is your guy.

? SS Derek Jeter, New York Yankees (43, 38, 70): Jeter took an important step in his comeback on Saturday, playing his first game in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He went 0-for-2 and played five innings at shortstop, but obviously the results don't mean a thing here. The fact that he was able to play five innings in the field without incident, and feel equally as good after the game, is the news. He'll play a few more games in the minors before rejoining the Yankees, but it looks as though there's a good chance he'll be back before the All-Star break. The time to grab him is now.

The droppables

? SP Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies: Kendrick has been hammered in each of his last two starts and three times in the last month. Just looking at his last two outings, he has allowed 10 runs on 22 hits in 11 innings, striking out just four. He was always a chancy fantasy play because of his lack of strikeouts, and that is really starting to show up as the season progresses. You can still afford to roster him in deeper mixed leagues (at least 14 teams), but those of you in the shallow end can feel free to let him go.

? 1B/3B Mark Reynolds, Cleveland Indians: If you're in a deep league, you probably want to hold on to Reynolds. Bench him for now, because he's in a terrible run at the plate, but he can get hot and carry you for a week or two. However, those of you in shallow leagues should get this rate-killer off your team. He hit .187/.288/.253 in June, and has yet to get a hit in 16 at-bats in July. You can find plenty of guys who will come just short of matching his power, but will actually get on base at a rate greater than 29 percent. There's no need for you to have Reynolds.

The "Pro" And "Anti" Egypt Coup Crowds Now Gathering, In Two ...

If there was a day when the post-military coup situation in Egypt could come to an explosive culmination, today is the first such opportunity. The pro-Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood-led supporters, having regained their bearings after last week's tumultuous events in which they were forcibly removed from power, have regrouped and are organizing protest marches across various Egyptian cities. The problem is that so are the victorious anti-Morsi groups, which match the supportive rallies in size, and also have the support of the military.

Ahram reports:

Marches in Cairo, planned to kick off at 5pm on Sunday, will set out from Fatah Mosque in Cairo's Ramses district; the nearby Sayeda Zeinab Mosque; Mohandeseen district's Mostafa Mahmoud Square and Dawaran Shubra Square in the working-class Shubra Al-Kheima district towards Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo and the Ittihadiya presidential palace in Heliopolis - focal points of mass rallies that led to the overthrow of the Islamist president.

?

Anti-Morsi groups warn of a US-Brotherhood plot to "occupy" their protest venues - namely Tahrir Square - the cradle of the 2011 revolution.

?

In Egypt's second city of Alexandria, two marches are planned to converge at the Sidi Gaber Square - a site of many recent clashes.

?

Marches are scheduled towards flashpoint squares in the pivotal city of Suez, which will meet in Al-Arbaeen Square, and the Nile Delta city of Mahala at Al-Shoun Square.

?

Provincial towns in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta will see mass rallies converge outside governors' offices. Rival demonstrations by the former president's Islamist backers ? a strong force in Upper Egypt - are planned in the same cities, heightening fears of more violent showdowns.

?

Since president Morsi's ouster on Wednesday, street battles between rival factions have killed at least 37 people and injured more than 1,400.

?

The Muslim Brotherhood-led National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy has called for mass nationwide rallies on Sunday to defend Morsi's "constitutional legitimacy." Thousands of Morsi supporters have already been camping out at Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque in Cairo for over a week with plans to continue.

?

More pro-Morsi demonstrations are planned in other focal points in Cairo, inducing the Presidential Guard Building and Nahda Square near Cairo University - a scene of fierce clashes between rival camps last week.

Yet little does the combustible situation justice quite as effectively as the following two images from Al Jazeera, showing both the anti-Morsi demonstrations in Tahrir Square...

... and the pro-Morsi protest gathering in Nasr City.

Captain of wrecked cruise ship on trial in Italy

GROSSETO, Italy (AP) ? The trial of the captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner began Tuesday in a theater converted into a courtroom in Tuscany to accommodate all the survivors and relatives of the 32 victims who want to see justice carried out in the 2012 tragedy, but the hearing was quickly postponed because of a nationwide strike by lawyers.

The sole defendant, Francesco Schettino, is charged with multiple manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing the shipwreck near the island of Giglio. He slipped through a back door and did not speak to reporters as he arrived at the courtroom.

Judge Giovanni Puliatti adjourned the hearing until July 17 because of a strike by lawyers over a long-running dispute with the Justice Ministry over proposed reforms.

Schettino's lawyer, Domenico Pepe, said that some 1,000 witnesses will be called to testify.

Many of the witnesses will be drawn from the 4,2000 passengers and crew aboard the ship that struck a jagged reef off Giglio, took on water and capsized.

Schettino, depicting himself as a scapegoat, has denied wrongdoing.

One of the lawyers representing victims, Daniele Bocciolini, said what his clients wanted was simple. "We are asking for justice," he told Sky TG24 TV, indicating frustration that only the captain was put on trial.

Schettino is the only defendant," but he is not the only one responsible," Bocciolini said. "There is still a need to shed light on what happened."

Five other defendants successfully sought plea bargains, and their hearing will be held in Grosseto on July 20. Their sentences are expected to be far milder than the 20 years in prison Schettino might face if convicted.

The Concordia itself lies on its side and half-submerged off the tiny Tuscan island of Giglio, blighting the seascape for another summer in an otherwise pristine part of the Mediterranean.

Some 18 months after the hulking ship ran aground, it is a daily reminder of slow the progress in dealing with the aftermath has been. The remains of two of the 32 dead have yet to be found. The timetable to salvage it has stretched on.

Although court-appointed experts concluded that the crew and owner Costa Crociere SpA, a unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp., committed blunders and safety breaches that contributed to the disaster off the island's rocky coast, only Schettino was ordered to stand trial.

Prosecutors contend that on the night of Jan. 13, 2012, Schettino steered the ship too close to the island's coastline in a publicity stunt for Costa Crociere and accidentally rammed the jagged reef. The cruise company denies that scenario.

Survivors described a chaotic and delayed evacuation, with crew allegedly downplaying the seriousness of the collision, which caused a gash 70 meters (230-feet) long in the Concordia's side and let seawater rush into the ship.

Schettino has protested his innocence. He insists that his skillful steering of the liner to just outside the port saved thousands of lives. He also contends the ship's navigational charts didn't indicate the reef was in its path as it cruised near the island on part of a weeklong Mediterranean tour.

A recording of a phone conversation between Schettino and an exasperated Italian coast guard official who repeatedly ordered the captain in vain to scramble back aboard the ship to direct the evacuation was played again and again in broadcasts around the world.

In interviews, Schettino insisted he is no coward. He claimed he had to leave the capsizing boat before it was impossible to launch any more lifeboats and that in the darkness he didn't see a ladder he could have used to climb back aboard.

On Giglio, where residents depend on tourism and fishing for their livelihoods, the wreckage still mars the panorama from the island's port. Salvage experts had originally predicted the ship could be tipped upright in an ambitious operation so towing could begin in spring of this year. But that timetable has slipped away.

The removal project involves some 400 workers representing 18 nationalities, including engineers and divers. On Monday, crews were busy securing some of the caissons being attached to one side of the crippled ship, which, the planners hope, will help the wreckage stay afloat when eventually righted so it can be towed to the mainland.

Islanders are impatient for the removal of the eyesore.

"We want our island back as it was," Giglio's mayor, Sergio Ortelli, told The Associated Press as he looked at the blue cove where he used to swim. Now, towering cranes and platforms of the removal team loom over the shipwreck.

Ortelli said authorities told the islanders the operation will begin in September to bring the wrecked ship upright again.

The island is still awaiting compensation for damages caused by the shipwreck, he said. "Our image was internationally damaged, and tourism figures have dropped off noticeably," the mayor said.

Meanwhile, the remains of an Italian woman who was a passenger and of an Indian man who worked as a waiter have still not been recovered.

"The saddest thing is to pass by on the ferry and think that two bodies are still there, or will never be found," said tourist Patrizia Giovanelli, who was making her second visit to the island.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale expects Dwight Howard to be the NBA's best center

Within seconds of Kevin McHale walking into Amway Center's practice gym Sunday morning for the start of the Orlando Pro Summer League, a friend approached and said, "Congratulations!"

The congratulations, of course, stemmed from Dwight Howard's decision to sign a free-agent contract with the team McHale coaches, the Houston Rockets.

"You're always evolving and changing, and I think Dwight's in the process of evolving and changing," McHale told reporters Sunday. "He says he's way healthier now than he has been. His back feels better. I just anticipate him coming in and doing what he did for years: being the best, most dominant center in the league."

McHale said he "had a pretty good feeling" that Howard would choose the Rockets over a list of suitors that consisted of the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks.

Howard made his plans known Friday night.

The news reportedly prompted Rockets center Omer Asik to request a trade.

McHale was asked about Asik on Sunday, and McHale responded that he can envision playing Howard and Asik simultaneously.

"Look," McHale said, "Omer had a great year for us last year and really became one of the top centers in the league. It's just that when you have an opportunity to get a Dwight, it's hard not to. So I'm sure right now Omer is probably a little down in the dumps. We'll pick him up."

Kidd earns a 'T'

New Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd made his coaching debut Sunday as his team lost to the Detroit Pistons 76-67.

Kidd earned a technical foul late in the fourth quarter when he left the coach's box to speak to a referee because he felt the referee missed a call.

"It happens," Kidd said. "They're not perfect. We're not perfect. So it's a lesson learned, and I know I can't go past halfcourt."

Kidd also employed a Hack-a-Shaq strategy down the stretch to send Andre Drummond to the line.

Stevens observes

New Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens observed from a courtside seat as his new team lost to the Orlando Magic 95-88.

Stevens, whom the Celtics hired from Butler University, acknowledged that he has a lot to learn before the C's begin training camp.

"I'm going to study as hard as I can," Stevens said. "I saw my wife study for the bar [exam] for two months like it was going out of style. My stuff [in basketball] is a lot more interesting than that, so it'll probably be a similar summer to what she had."

New contract

Rookie Victor Oladipo signed his contract with the Magic prior to Sunday's exhibition against the Celtics.

The salaries of first-round draft picks are set forth in the league's collective-bargaining agreement and are based on a player's draft position in a particular year.

Oladipo's salary for the 2013-14 season is expected to be $4.76 million while his second-year salary is expected to be $4.98 million. Those first two seasons are fully guaranteed, as they are with all first-round draft picks.

The Magic will hold team options on Oladipo's third and fourth seasons, with his salaries expected to be $5.2 million for the 2015-16 season and $6.55 million for the 2016-17 season.

Harris sits out

Magic forward Tobias Harris didn't play Sunday because he banged knees with a Magic teammate during a practice three days earlier.

Team officials are listing him as "day-to-day" and say he was held out as a precaution. Harris was walking without a brace and without a limp, but it's unclear whether he'll play before the league concludes.

Layups

? Rookie forward Keith Clanton from UCF, who accepted an invite to join the Magic's summer league team, was one of seven healthy players for Orlando who didn't play Sunday.

? The Magic are scheduled to face the Oklahoma City Thunder at 11 a.m. today. The Thunder's roster includes former Magic center Daniel Orton and former Magic shooting guard DeAndre Liggins. Orton scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers 76-68 Sunday. Liggins scored two points and dished out three assists.

Wyoming GOP Unsure About Liz Cheney Senate Bid

Liz Cheney is preparing for a Republican primary showdown for the Wyoming Senate seat but the former vice president's daughter may face a backlash from GOP supporters of the popular incumbent Sen. Michael B. Enzi.

"It wouldn't go over well here if she stepped over him," one of Enzi's supporters at a recent Newcastle town meeting told the New York Times.

The supporter asked that her name not be used in the Sunday report, fearing it would offend the former Vice President and Defense Secretary, Dick Cheney.

"We love her and her family, and we hope she has a place, but not his place," the supporter said. "She just moved back here, she didn?t even grow up here, and I don?t think she could beat him."

Cheney told reporters last year that she was moving with her husband and children from Virginia to Jackson Hole, Wyo., to be closer to her parents. Dick and Lynne Cheney also divide their time between homes in McLean, Va., and Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The 46-year-old Cheney brushed off political aspirations at the time, when speculation was growing that Enzi would not seek another term.

However, Enzi has since indicated he will seek a third term in next year's election, and with a 92 percent rating from the American Conservative Union, will be a tough opponent to beat.

The Times report suggested that the younger Cheney is nudging Enzi into retirement with her father's approval. The two men have been political friends since the 1970s when Cheney held the state's at-large congressional seat and Enzi served as mayor of Gillette.

Enzi referred to the former vice president as his "good friend" in an interview, and said that he expected the senior statesman would give him the courtesy of a phone call if his daughter decides to launch a primary challenge.

Enzi concedes that the younger Cheney has already called to tell him she is considering a run.

Former Wyoming Sen. Alan K. Simpson, a Republican, told the Times that a primary challenge would bring about "the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming."

"It?s a disaster ? a divisive, ugly situation ? and all it does is open the door for the Democrats for 20 years," Simpson said.

No silver bullet: 'Lone Ranger' flops at box office

Movies

Failing to fire off a silver bullet, Disney's "The Lone Ranger" posted a grim five-day debut of $48.9 million, far from enough to make up for the high cost of the Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer Western.

Disney

"The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the masked avenger, failed to light up the holiday box office.

Conversely, Universal and Illumination Entertainment's "Despicable Me 2" dazzled, posting a five-day debut of $142.1 million ? one of the best showings of all time for an animated film and just ahead of what "Toy Story 3" earned in its first five days. The 3D animated family film fueled one of the best July Fourth holiday stretches on record in terms of overall box-office revenue.

Overseas, "Despicable 2" is also looking like a mega hit. The movie grossed $88.8 million from 45 markets over the weekend for an early international total of $151.1 million and worldwide cume of $293.2 million. The sequel placed No. 1 in 42 of the 45 countries.

Despite Depp's popularity at the international box office, "Lone Ranger" turned in a soft performance as it began rolling out overseas, grossing $29.4 million from 24 markets for a worldwide opening total of $78.3 million. Westerns have always been a tough sell with foreign audiences.

STORY: Who is That Masked Man? 6 Things to Know About the Lone Ranger

Coming in No. 3 in North America after "Despicable 2"and "Lone Ranger"was 20th Century Fox's "The Heat," starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. The R-rated comedy held well in its second weekend, falling only 36 percent to $25 million for a stellar domestic total of $86.4 million.

"Lone Ranger" ?costing at least $250 million to produce ? marks the summer's third major disappointment after Will Smith tentpole "After Earth" and Jamie Foxxand Channing Tatum's "White House Down" ? both Sony pics ? and is almost certain to pose a major financial headache for Disney. "White House Down"fell to No. 6 in its second weekend, falling 47 percent to $11.2 million for a domestic total of $50.1 million.

With "Lone Ranger," Disney had hoped to whip up the same magic that producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director GoreVerbinski and Depp created with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, which played heavily to families, as well as adults and teenagers. In this latest film, Depp applies his penchant for playing quirky characters to the role of Tonto (Depp says he is part Native American), while Hammer plays the Lone Ranger.

At one point, before Verbinski began shooting, the plug was almost pulled on "Lone Ranger" because of budget concerns. The filmmakers agreed to bring the budget down to $215 million, but the price tag steadily rose once shooting began (all the stunts are real). Another issue is the film's lengthy running time of 149 minutes.

"Lone Ranger" suffered in appealing mostly to older moviegoers, with 58 percent of the audience over the age of 35, including 24 percent over the age of 50 percent. Moviegoers under the age of 18 only made up 16 percent of the audience. More problematic, families only made up 22 percent of the audience.

"Despicable Me 2" helped fuel one of the best July Fourth stretches at the box office ever.

"Despicable 2" is easily walking away with the glory, both domestically and internationally.

It's also smashing a number of records. In North America, the family pic scored the second-highest Thursday gross in history behind "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($29.1 million). (That doesn't include films that opened on Thursday.) And on Wednesday, Universal's sequel scored the third-highest opening day for an animated feature behind "Toy Story 3" and "Shrek the Third" (both those films opened on a Friday).

In the toon, Steve Carell returns to voice the role of Gru, master of the minions, while Kristen Wiig voices the role of Agent Lucy Wilde.

The third new entry of the July Fourth holiday frame was Summit Entertainment's stand-up comedy film "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain," which turned in a solid $17.4 million debut (it's only playing in 876 theaters). Summit succeeded in providing counter-programming for African-American audiences as well as comedy fans. The film, from Codeblack Films and HartBeat Productions, was shot live at New York's Madison Square Garden.

At the specialty box office, Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back" got off to a strong start, grossing $575,000 from 19 theaters for a location average of $30,263, the best of the weekend. Opening Friday, the coming-of-age dramedy, produced by OddLot Entertainment, was directed by Nat Faxonand Jim Rash and stars Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell.

Two caf?s to debut at the Michigan Union this fall

ANN ARBOR?Two new caf?s will open at the Michigan Union this fall, further expanding the variety of food offerings in the heart of University of Michigan's Central Campus.

Au Bon Pain, a caf? and bakery, will move into the space on the first floor where the University Club now operates. Starbucks also will locate on the first floor in the space traditionally used as a coffee cafe. Remodeling will begin later this summer for the new operations, with anticipated openings later in the fall semester.

"Our selection committee was very impressed with both Au Bon Pain and Starbucks," said Susan Pile, director of the Michigan Union. "Both are a good fit with the broad range of students and others who visit the Union each day."

"From a student perspective, the new vendors are a positive change," said Adam Kleven, chair of the Michigan Union Board of Representatives. "Au Bon Pain wants to ensure student needs are met in terms of food selection and social space; Starbucks is undeniably popular and will increase the number of students who come into the Union."

Au Bon Pain and Starbucks will complete the refreshed food offerings in the Michigan Union. Remodeling already is underway on the ground floor for food vendors that will include Ahmo's Mediterranean Grill, Panda Express, Subway, Freshens, U-go's and Wendy's. Those restaurants will reopen in late summer.

The Michigan Union location will be Au Bon Pain's second location in Michigan. The company operates more than 315 cafes worldwide and is located on many college campuses including Duke University, University of Chicago and the University of Maryland.

Au Bon Pain's marketplace concept offers customers a variety of made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, soups and fresh baked goods. The restaurant also offers a grab-and-go section for quicker service. It will be open the same hours that the Michigan Union is open, 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-2 a.m. Sunday. According to Pile, this is a positive change for the Union that will mean providing more food options at different times of day for students and the rest of the campus community.

"What impressed us about Au Bon Pain was the company's experience on many college campuses, its responsible product sourcing and the ability to share detailed nutritional information for every food item," Pile said. "That approach fits right in with the values that are important to our community: sustainable practices, a large, varied menu, and easy-to-find nutritional information."

Pile said Au Bon Pain architects are working closely with university staff in developing a design that ties into the tradition and spirit of the historic Michigan Union. In addition to remodeling the space for the restaurant operation, plans will incorporate a performance area for music and other presentations by student groups and special guests.

The University Club has been operating in the Michigan Union since 1937. In recent years it has been open only for lunch with its popular salad bar. Pile said the U-Club has struggled to capture a wide audience and remain financially viable for the university.

The University Club will close on Aug. 13.

Starbucks is giving the first-floor coffee shop space a makeover before it opens in the fall. The architectural features of the space, including the windows, arches, and brick walls will be maintained. Pile said Starbucks' focus on fast service, well-trained baristas, quality ingredients and responsible purchasing were some of the company's appealing features.
