KENYA: Child killed in grenade attack on Kenyan church

A nine-year-old boy was killed and three other children wounded when a hand grenade was thrown into a Sunday school session in a church in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, police and medical staff said.

Kenya has suffered a series of grenade attacks since it sent troops across the border into Somalia last October in pursuit of Islamist al Shabaab militants who it blamed for kidnapping its security personnel and Western tourists.

The attack on the church came days after Kenyan troops launched a surprise offensive on the southern Somali port of Kismayu, the last stronghold of the al Shabaab, forcing the rebels to flee.

Police said attackers threw the grenade into the Sunday school service in St. Polycarp's church on Nairobi's Juja Road.

The grenade exploded, spraying the children with shrapnel and fatally injuring the boy.
"We suspect this blast might have been carried out by sympathisers of al Shabaab," said deputy police spokesman Charles Owino.

"These are the kicks of a dying horse since, of late, Kenyan police have arrested several suspects in connection with grenades," he added.

Masked assailants launched simultaneous gun and grenade raids on two churches in the northern town of Garissa in July, killing at least 17 people.

Lincoln coach returns to field

Lincoln coach returns to the field

DES MOINES, Iowa ?

Friday night marked the fourth game Lincoln head football coach Tom Mihalovich sat out.

The coach was sidelined after a player's family expressed concerns about his discipline policies almost one month ago.

But Friday night in a surprising twist, Mihalovich made an appearance at the homecoming football game -- all because of one special request that almost wasn't granted.

On Thursday we told you about Vybert Greene's request. The co-captain of the football team asked Mihalovich and his wife to escort him out on the field for homecoming court.

The soft-spoken senior, whose mother is battling cancer, said Mihalovich has been his role model and his "rock."

"I just thought it was important to be there," Greene said.

The school had denied the request because Mihalovich isn't allowed to be on school grounds during his suspension but at the last minute school district officials changed their minds.

The loudest applause Friday night was for Mihalovich. Greene was thrilled.

"I'm glad they let me have what I wanted," he said. "It's a good feeling. Coach, I always look up to him so it's a big deal."

Mihalovich said he appreciated the school district's decision.

(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Muslims across the Middle East outraged by an anti-Islam film made in America wanted swift punishment for the man behind the movie, and now Mark Basseley Youssef is behind bars. But he's jailed for lying about his identity, not because of the video's content.

Court documents show Youssef, 55, legally changed his name from Nakoula Basseley Nakoula in 2002, but never told federal authorities, who now are using that as part of the probation violation case against him.

Youssef was ordered jailed without bail Thursday until a hearing is held to determine if he violated terms of his supervised release on a 2010 bank fraud conviction. Prosecutors allege he used multiple aliases and lied to his probation officers about his real name.

Youssef, an Egyptian-born Christian who's now a U.S. citizen, sought to obtain a passport in his new name but still had a California driver's license as Nakoula, assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Friday. Youssef used a third name, Sam Bacile, in association with the 14-minute trailer for the movie "Innocence of Muslims" that was posted on YouTube. It portrays Muhammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

Angry protests sparked by the film broke out Sept. 11 in Egypt and Libya and violence related to the film has spread, killing dozens. Enraged Muslims demanded punishment for Youssef, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

Youssef went into hiding on Sept. 15 and his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos was put up for sale. He was arrested Thursday and appeared that afternoon for a proceeding in a courtroom that was opened only to lawyers and his family. A feed was provided to the media in a different building.

Afterward, Youssef was whisked away to a federal detention center in Los Angeles where he'll stay until the hearing.

The case isn't about Youssef's First Amendment right to make a controversial film. Rather, Dugdale said, it's about his failure to live up to his obligation to be truthful with federal authorities.

"The fact that he wasn't using his true name with probation, that's where the problem is," said Dugdale, who noted federal authorities now will refer to Nakoula as Youssef.

Adam Winkler, a constitutional law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles' School of Law, said U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal's decision to order Youssef held without bail is supported by the evidence.

"He has numerous different aliases and numerous government documents with different names on them and that's exactly the kind of person that judges want to be extra careful with," he said. "This is not an end-run around constitutional protections. Those are major red flags in any case and even if this was a low-profile case and the same facts had come out, this person would be denied bond."

Given the threats against him, Youssef has the motive to flee, even if there's an arrest warrant for him in his native Egypt and a call for his head in Pakistan, said Olu Orange, a former public defender and an adjunct professor in the University of Southern California's political science department.

"He has the means to leave, as well as the inclination and the know-how. I don't see him as not being a flight risk," Orange said.

Youssef's attorney, Steven Seiden, has not replied to multiple requests for comment via letter, email and phone message. In court Thursday, he sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Youssef has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

A hearing will be scheduled to determine if Youssef violated his probation. Prosecutors also said he could face new charges, though they provided no details other than to say they could carry a two-year prison sentence.

After his 2010 conviction, Youssef was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Orange County Superior Court documents show Nakoula was granted a name change petition in 2002 and legally became Mark Basseley Youssef. As reason for the change, he said: "Nakoula is a girl's name and it cause me troubles."

Authorities said Youssef used more than a dozen aliases and opened about 60 bank accounts and had more than 600 credit and debit cards to conduct the check fraud.

When he was identified as Nakoula after the movie trailer went viral, federal probation officials questioned him. He denied using the name Sam Bacile, which was listed on the YouTube account that posted the trailer, and said his role in the film was limited to writing the script. Dugdale said there is evidence showing Youssef had a larger role in the film. He declined to elaborate.

Rebecca Lonergan, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law, said it's possible federal authorities never would have pursued a probation violation case against Youssef were it not for the film.

"They don't have enough people to go out and pick up every single violator on every single warrant, but he did something that brought him to everybody's attention," Lonergan said. "I think the reality is he brought this on himself."

Physical activity interventions for children have 'little impact', study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physical activity interventions for children have small impact on overall activity levels and consequently the body fat and mass of children, a study published on bmj.com today suggests.

Previous studies have shown that greater activity levels are associated with lower levels of BMI (body mass index) but that physical activity interventions have been unsuccessful in improving children's BMI. Many previous reviews have not, however, confined their analyses to whole-day activity and some relied on questionnaires rather than objective measures of physical activity like pedometers to measure daily steps taken. This is the first systematic review to measure physical activity using accelerometry devices which provide a measure of total bodily movement across waking hours.

Authors from Plymouth and Exeter, England, therefore took results from 30 randomised controlled trials that took place between January 1990 and March 2012. All participants were aged 16 or under and must have completed an intervention that lasted at least four weeks. Eight studies involved only overweight / obese children and the rest involved children from all BMI categories. All trials were matched on age, ethnicity and socio-economic status and were adjusted for gender and baseline activity. Effects of intervention were calculated on both total physical activity and time spent in moderate-or-vigorous physical activity.

Physical activity interventions analysed included one in the US which sought to increase the physical activity of 729 children (average age 11) by providing three 90 minute after-school activity-related sessions per week. Each session was made up of 60 minutes of high intensity activity but halfway through the trial the children were only carrying out an extra five minutes of walking or running per day and by the end of the trial this effect had disappeared completely.

Another intervention, which took place in Scotland, was carried out over 24 weeks and looked to increase the activity of 268 nursery-school aged children by providing three 30 minute sessions per week during nursery hours. Again this did not increase the activity of the children and appeared to make them less active as they spent one minute less per day walking or running compared to the children in the control group.

The review found that interventions achieved "small-to-negligible" increases in children's total activity volume with small improvements in time spent in moderate-or-vigorous intensities (equal to four more minutes walking or running per day), which would have minimal impact on children BMI or body fat (equal to a reduction of 2mm in waist circumference). The authors suggest that the interventions could be replacing periods of equally intense activity such as after-school activity clubs that would usually be spent outdoors. Previous studies have suggested that interventions do not work because they lead to higher calorie consumption.

The authors conclude that in the mind of the public, physical inactivity is a major cause of childhood obesity and although the need to increase it is intuitive the "small increase gained from formal interventions seems insufficient to improve the body mass / fat of children." They suggest that further studies should capture both whole day activity and activity related to intervention-specific periods.

In an accompanying editorial, authors from University College London suggest that the study's chosen method of analysis does have "inherent limitations" although the results provide the best evidence to date on the effectiveness of activity interventions in childhood. They suggest that the focus of other studies should also shift away from overweight and obese children and instead look at outcomes that relate to improving health in children regardless of their weight. Hamer and Fisher suggest that future research should focus on how changes to the indoor and outdoor environment can encourage children's activity.

Syria's capital strangely calm despite civil war

By Meredith Birkett

Japhet Weeks, a 31-year-old American freelance video journalist, just returned from a weeklong trip to Damascus, where he found a suprising level of quiet and normalcy in a country wracked by civil war.

Japhet Weeks

A spice merchant in Damascus's old city.

Weeks wrote in an email to NBCNews.com on Wednesday:

While fighting continues in the suburbs -- and of course most recently bombs went off in the center today -- I was surprised by how regular Damascenes seem to be trying to get on with their lives. The markets are crowded. Vegetable stands are overflowing with fresh produce. People continue to get married with lavish celebrations. Children are out playing in the streets.?

Still, signs of the ongoing conflict are everywhere: military checkpoints are frequent, there is an increased number of displaced and mostly poor families, smoke rises from fire fights between government soldiers and rebels in the capital's suburbs.

Japhet Weeks

Images of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad and his father, Hafez, hang at an unmanned checkpoint in Damascus.

Weeks' images of daily life in Syria's capital are a stark contrast to many tragic images coming out of the northern parts of the country, where fighting is fiercest. In those areas, most journalists sneak into the country in order to work independently, though they often rely on rebel troops or aid groups to help guide or shelter them. Weeks used an official visa as part of a video crew centering their work in Damascus. That city is known to be a regime stronghold, so he was accompanied by a government representative who limited his ability to photograph places where fighting was happening, buildings that were deemed a security risk, as well as government soldiers.

Japhet Weeks

Syrian children in Damascus's Christian quarter.

Most of the citizens encountered by the crew were in favor of President Bashar Assad, though it was hard to discern how much of their commentary was influenced by the government guide's presence. Those residents described the battles as occurring between Syria's army and terrorists sent in by surrounding countries to destabilize Assad, a view touted by state-run television.

Japhet Weeks

Smoke rises from fighting between government soldiers and rebels on the outskirts of Damascus.

Despite working inside this "bubble," Weeks said his use of an iPhone camera (using the Hipstamatic app and the Ben Lowy filter with borders cropped out), and shooting subtly "from the hip," enabled him to capture more candid moments than he can typically film with his much larger video camera on a tripod.

Most days in the capital, Weeks saw large plumes of smoke rising from outlying areas. Despite his proximity to the fighting, Weeks was struck by the lack of a heavy military presence in the capital's center. But that may change as rebels strike closer to the heart of the regime this week and Assad's troops fight back.

Japhet Weeks

A man leans against a car in Damascus.

Weeks said it was hard to come to grips with the dichotomies he was witnessing. After seeing a man who was seemingly relaxed while leaning against a car, he was struck by the fact that in other parts of the country, hundreds of thousands of people have fled fighting. Another example happened the first night in his hotel, where he found an opulent wedding in progress. "I guess she has a right to have her perfect wedding day. It shouldn't really matter that her countrymen are slaughtering each other somewhere else. But at some point it should matter, you know? There should there be more austerity. It all just made me more confused leaving than I was arriving."

Japhet Weeks

A wedding taking place in the lobby of the photographer's hotel. The noisy celebration included traditional singing, women wearing shimmering, sequined miniskirts, and men in suits. For Damascus's wealthy life seems to be going on despite the country's civil war.

Drive Targeted Traffic To Your Online Affiliate Marketing Business ...

?

By William Morgan

Twitter can be used to drive targeted traffic to your online affiliate marketing business.

The important thing to remember here is not to over self-promote. You want to create a balance between self-promotion and sharing information that isn?t always yours. Over self-promoting is frowned upon on Twitter. However if you continually share information that provides value to your followers and occasionally link to self-promoting resources, twitter can become a very valuable asset to your business.

Provide value and your online affiliate marketing business will flourish. When people realize that you are providing value to them they will regularly start following your links. It?s important to remember that Twitter and blogging go hand-in-hand. Twitter has changed the way people communicate online, and therefore should be included in your overall marketing plan. As powerful as twitter can be for your online affiliate marketing business it is still free to join, and you can set up an account in minutes.

Twitter is very simple to understand and really only has two main components, getting followers and you following other people. Your followers will receive your updates and you in return will receive all their updates. Twitter is often referred to as micro-blogging, because your messages are limited to just one hundred and 40 characters. Sending and receiving messages that are brief and right to the point is a fun experience, that doesn?t take up very much time.

You must choose your words wisely if you expect to get your point across and just 140 characters, say what you want to say in such a small space I believe is a major reason why Twitter has become such a popular social media.

When using Twitter for your online affiliate marketing business always try to think out of the box. Use the search feature and twitter to find people with similar interests to yours, and then follow them. Many times they will follow you back, don?t ignore them, when someone follows you be certain to communicate with them by sending them a direct message.

Twitter is a great website traffic builder that you?ll want to use in your online affiliate marketing business you can get quality traffic by sending messages (tweets) that are valuable and helpful to your followers. Twitter users come from all over the world, and communicating with people in other countries can be intriguing.

As you add followers, and as they start following you back slowly you will get to know each other, and a communication line has been developed. In business this can be a huge asset, for example if you need a favor, you can send out a tweet asking your followers for help. You never know who can help you, or who knows someone that you can get help from.

What is re-tweeting? A re-tweet is what is called when someone takes a message you sent and then sends it to their followers. Very similar to forwarding e-mail. When you send a valuable tweet to your followers, request that they re-tweeted so that it gets passed on to their followers. If your message is interesting enough it will become viral, and if it contains a link to your website, you?re golden. Your online affiliate marketing business will now receive all those back links,

in your online affiliate marketing business can drive unlimited amounts of targeted traffic to your business. It?s fun and easy to use and costs absolutely nothing. Don?t over self-promote, focus on providing value to your followers.Learn how use Twitter

Toys R Us To Add 45,000 Seasonal Hires - Careers ... - AOL Jobs

Toys R Us hiring seasonal

Toys R Us Inc said it will hire 45,000 seasonal employees across the United States to cope with the upcoming holiday season.

The toy store hired about 40,000 seasonal workers last year, roughly 15 percent of whom were kept on after the period ended.

Last week, Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it planned to hire more than 50,000 seasonal employees to work at its Walmart stores in the United States, slightly more than last year, while department store operator Kohl's Corp said it would hire 52,700 people, or 10 percent more than last year.

The increase in hiring comes as shoppers continue to spend more in stores than they did a year ago, helped by the gradually improving economy.

While the number of seasonal jobs added this year is likely to be slightly higher than a year ago, it will still trail levels seen before the recession, as retailers exercise caution when it comes to hiring, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

"Look for many to start at last year's levels and hire additional workers only if strong sales early in the season warrant it," John Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said on Monday.

Challenger's firm expects the number of seasonal retail jobs this holiday season could approach 700,000, up from 2011, when chains added just over 660,000 seasonal staffers.

Back in 2006, retailers added nearly 747,000 seasonal staffers, while in 1999 nearly 850,000 workers joined the seasonal ranks, Challenger said.

More: 7 Part-Time Jobs That Pay Up To $40 An Hour

Research firm ShopperTrak this month forecast U.S. retail sales would rise 3.3 percent this holiday season, while consulting firm Kurt Salmon expects a 4.2 percent increase.

Retailers typically add staff in the weeks leading up to the holidays to work in stores and to help in other areas, such as distribution and fulfilling online orders.

Some of the increase arises from a need for more staff at the retailers' distribution centers to help quickly deliver online orders and compete with online retailers such as Amazon.com Inc.

Not all retailers are adding a greater amount of seasonal staff. Target Corp (TGT.N) plans to hire about 80,000 to 90,000 seasonal employees for its stores and distribution centers. While Target plans to hire fewer than the 92,000 it brought on in 2011, it said that 30 percent of those who were hired to work during last year's holiday season were then given year-round positions.

China official says spat with Japan derails free trade talks

BEIJING (Reuters) - A festering territorial dispute between China and Japan has derailed talks for a free trade zone involving the two countries and South Korea, an adviser to China's central bank said on Thursday.

Sino-Japanese ties are at their lowest in decades amid a row over a series of islands in the East China Sea, waters believed to be rich in natural gas deposits, with neither side backing down on its claim of sovereignty.

Violent protests broke out across China last week after the Japanese government bought two of the islands, known as the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku in Japan. Tokyo also has a dispute over other islands with South Korea.

"We hope the suspension is temporary," Chen Yulu, a professor at China's Renmin University and an adviser to the monetary policy committee of the People's Bank of China, said of the free trade zone talks. "It will be a big loss for Asia if the process is terminated."

Chen was speaking on the sidelines of a central banking conference involving representatives of all three nations.

Despite the tension, Japanese and Chinese officials met on Thursday to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations, but the head of the Japanese side said he came "with a heavy heart".

What was meant to be a high-level celebration of normalized relations was instead a stiff acknowledgement that the world's second- and third-largest economies remain neighbors with a long history of cooperation.

"Today I have come to Beijing with a number of people who have worked hard over a long time on relations with China," former Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono told Jia Qinglin, a senior Chinese leader, in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

"The conditions are rather different from when I met Your Excellency in the spring, and I come this time with a heavy heart."

Jia, the Communist Party's fourth-ranked official, called the Japanese visitors "old friends of the Chinese people".

Occupy protester can't keep tweets from DA

1 hr.

NEW YORK???An Occupy Wall Street protester has lost his latest bid to prevent the Manhattan district attorney's office from using his tweets against him, clearing the way for the judge overseeing the case to unseal the tweets and give them to prosecutors.

In a case that has drawn the attention of electronic privacy advocates, a New York judge denied a request from the protester, Malcolm Harris, to put the tweets on ice while his appeal is pending.

Harris, 23, was arrested along with hundreds of others during a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge in October 2011 for obstructing vehicular traffic.

Prosecutors subpoenaed Twitter for several months of his tweets, which are no longer available online, to combat his argument that police appeared to lead the protest onto the bridge before turning around and arresting them for walking on the roadway.

Electronic privacy advocates worry a precedent could be set that would make it more difficult for social media users to challenge law enforcement's use of their online words against them.

Twitter and Harris have unsuccessfully fought the subpoena, which has been repeatedly upheld as lawful by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino. The San Francisco-based company finally surrendered the tweets earlier this month after Sciarrino threatened it with contempt and a hefty fine.

Sciarrino had agreed to seal the tweets until a state Supreme Court judge ruled on Harris' latest request for a stay of Sciarrino's order upholding the subpoena. The judge, Carol Huff, denied the request this week.

Martin Stolar, Harris' attorney, said he was "disappointed" but would continue to pursue other legal challenges.

Sciarrino is reviewing the tweets and will provide to prosecutors those that appear relevant to the criminal case.

Twitter still has an appeal of Sciarrino's order pending in an intermediate appellate court, scheduled to be heard in November.

Harris also has a separate civil action pending, claiming Sciarrino overstepped his authority; prosecutors have asked a court to dismiss that lawsuit as an improper attempt to circumvent the normal appellate procedure.

Harris' criminal trial is scheduled for December.

The case is People v. Harris, Criminal Court of the City of New York, No. 2011NY080152.

Pending home sales dip due to supply shortage

By Reuters

Contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes slipped in August due to a shortage of lower priced inventory in most of the country, an industry group said on Thursday.

The National Association of Realtors said its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed in August, fell 2.6 percent to 99.2, but was 10.7 percent higher than last year.

July's reading was revised up to 101.9, the highest level since April 2010, when buyers were racing to use the home-buyer tax credit before the deadline, the group said.

"The performance in month-to-month contract signings has been uneven with ongoing shortages of lower priced inventory in much of the country," the association's chief economist, Lawrence Yun, said in a statement.

Does Canada Need a National ?Stop to Smell the Flowers? Day? | Dr ...

Yesterday, I was quoted in the media regarding a private members bill introduced by MP John Weston calling for municipalities to provide cheap access to fitness centres, as considering this idea rather ?simplistic?.

Not that I don?t think Canadians should be more active or that we must not do all we can to reduce the epidemic of sedentariness.

I just don?t believe that a) this needs to happen at fitness centres and b) that this is necessarily a bill that should be offered as a solution to the obesity problem.

If anything, these type of proposals do little else but perpetuate the myth that a bit of more physical activity will reduce body weights or prevent weight gain.

Rather, with, for example, the emerging evidence on the role of sleep deprivation on metabolism and body weight, we may as well be calling for a national ?Let?s All Sleep In Late? day or (even better) a national ?Let?s All Stop To Smell The Flowers? Day.

The point is not that I am against exercise or don?t believe in its benefits. The point is that it will take more than getting more Canadians into fitness centres to combat obesity.

Not that we should be stopping anyone from getting more active. MP Weston apparently is a sports buff himself, has three kids who are sports buffs, and a wife who is a personal fitness trainer - great for them, but hardly a model for the Canadians that I see in my practice.

It is certainly not the monetary cost of visiting a fitness centre stopping them - if anything, it is lack of time, low self-esteem, poor body image, depression, sheer exhaustion after a stressful day, and perhaps far too little restorative sleep.

The last thing they need is yet one more obligation (read: visit to a fitness centre) in their already busy and overscheduled days.

If they did have the extra hour or so to actually dedicate to going to a fitness centre my advice would probably be to rather get an extra hour of sleep or perhaps just an extra hour of mindful relaxation - read a book, go for a walk, play an instrument, paint a picture, or just take the time to have a meaningful conversation with your kid or partner - or, perhaps, just pause to smell the flowers.

The problem is not that Canadians are too lazy or too cheap to pay for fitness centres - the problem is that too many Canadians are too busy, too stressed, too short of time, too exhausted, spend too much time in their cars, and are too caught up in everything else that makes a healthy lifestyle virtually impossible.

As I?ve said before, changing your lifestyle is more about changing your ?life? than your ?style?.

Perhaps a life in which there is actually time to stop and smell the flowers will do more to prevent and better manage your weight than any workout that I?ve ever heard of.

Green ideas for green manufacturing | Eco-Business.com

The Fujisawa City project in the Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo brought together nine companies and the government to develop an energy-smart community. Image: Panasonic

In this interview by Singapore?s Energy Market Authority, Panasonic Asia Pacific managing director Yorihisa Shiokawa reveals how manufacturers can contribute to an energy efficient society through innovation, collaboration and careful management.

Energy Market Authority: Panasonic?s ambition is to be the leading ?Green Innovation Company? in the electronics sector. What steps is Panasonic undertaking to achieve this target? What impact will this have on consumers and the environment?

Yorihisa Shiokawa: We want to become the number one Green Innovation Company in the electronics sector by 2018. Through our ?eco ideas? strategy, we create innovative businesses, products and services that are energy-efficient or have smart energy features, and therefore are more environmentally-friendly. But they also help consumers save money. We are on track to achieving 80 per cent of our total sales in Asia Pacific from these eco products.

Panasonic Group is also focused on developing Total Energy Solutions that involve energy creation, storage, savings and management. We set up the Panasonic Energy Solutions Development Centre Singapore in July this year to develop total energy solutions not only for the region, but also to commercialise them globally. Panasonic is working closely with the local authorities in Singapore to test-bed some of our urban solutions at the?Punggol Eco-Town project.

We have a Panasonic Eco Learning Programme, which will help 200,000 students across Asia Pacific to develop environmental awareness and an understanding of how virtually zero CO2 emissions can be achieved through technology. We will continue to spread the word so that more will come together to create a positive impact on the environment.

Panasonic applies the ?eco ideas? strategy to our own business. We aim to reduce the environmental impact of our business operations by making the best use of resources and energy through green innovation. We have set a goal of a 600,000-tonne CO2 reduction in our operations versus a ?business-as-usual? level (based on our fiscal year ending March 2005).

We are also developing three more ?eco ideas? factories by March 2013, which will demonstrate our sustainability solutions and capabilities. These factories adopt green solutions and exemplify how reductions in CO2 emissions, managing waste generation and chemical substance releases and maintaining energy efficiency can be achieved in manufacturing facilities.

EMA: In difficult economic times, some consumers may not be inclined to pay for green-certified appliances. What role can global manufacturers play in raising the awareness of the importance of such appliances?

YS: Global manufacturers can take the lead to help imbue eco-consciousness among consumers though championing environmental awareness programmes and education initiatives. Industry players must work with governments worldwide to ensure their products are compliant with the energy regulations of each country. In Singapore, Panasonic?s air conditioners and refrigerators meet the standards which are required for The Energy Label, mandated by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Asia Pacific also has many environmental challenges in emerging and rapidly growing markets. Economic growth can create environmental pressures ? especially in creating and providing a stable supply of energy and meeting the demand for improved living standards. Product customisation for particular markets is important. In India, for example, the CUBE air-conditioner takes into account specific Indian climatic conditions and space limitations. This kind of product customisation will encourage customers to purchase green-certified appliances.

EMA: Businesses, especially manufacturing companies, are some of the biggest consumers of energy. How do you think businesses can and should conserve energy through their own business practices?

YS: Business growth must be achieved with an eye on conserving the planet for future generations. We are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the impact of our business operations. There are two ways to achieve this:

First, look at reducing CO2 emission. Panasonic has been using meters and gauges to manage energy consumption during production, as well as replacing fluorescent lights with energy-efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights in our factories. By doing so, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 560,000 tonnes in our Asia-Pacific operations as of the end March this year.

Second, companies should set assessment criteria on the environmental impact of their products. This needs to be done right from the planning and design stage. Improved environmental performance can be based on criteria such as energy savings, resource savings and chemicals management.

EMA: There is much being said about public-private partnerships in developing solutions that lower energy consumption. How have Japanese companies, for instance, collaborated with the Japanese government to help meet nationwide energy intensity goals?

YS: In Japan, such collaborations are increasingly important for a nation that is dependent on imports of virtually all fossil fuels. For decades, Japanese energy policy has focused on efficiency, diversity and development of indigenous energy sources.

One such recent project is Fujisawa City in Kanagawa Prefecture, situated about 50km west of Tokyo. This collaboration sees nine companies coming together with the government to build an innovative smart town deploying services and energy systems based on Panasonic?s ?eco ideas? for green lifestyles. The companies include developers, manufacturers and service providers and will see an eventual actual operation of the town with about 1,000 households. The smart town is to be built on the vacant lot of Panasonic?s former factory site and is targeted to open in the fiscal year ending in March 2014.

Apart from these large-scale collaborations, there are other ways to contribute to the nation, especially in times of crisis. At the end of March 2011, Panasonic donated a Life Innovation Container to the Miyagi Prefecture, which suffered widespread devastation in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The container is a standalone power system equipped with solar panels and rechargeable batteries to deliver electricity to areas without access to electricity.

But such collaborations are picking up in other parts of Asia as well. For example in Singapore, we are partnering with the Housing Development Board (HDB), Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Economic Development Board (EDB) to test-bed total energy solutions on an existing public residential building in Punggol Eco-Town. This project aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions for common areas of public housing in Singapore, and provide residents with a complete total energy solutions package that helps monitor and better manage their energy consumption.

EMA: Do you think companies can combine making contributions to the environment with business growth? Do you think legislation, such as those enacted in Japan and soon to be enacted in Singapore, will push companies to be more energy-efficient?

YS: Our belief is that we must integrate environmental conservation with business growth.? As such, we strive to achieve the highest achievement levels in reducing CO2 emissions, recycling resources, the size of our energy systems business and the sales ratio of environmentally-friendly products. These are our ?Green Indexes? and they are just as important as our Global Excellence Indexes, which look at sales, operating profit and return of equity.

Legislation also has a role to play in driving mindset changes in energy consumption and the nation?s energy mix.? In July 2012, the Japanese government rolled out feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for renewable energy. The Japanese FiTs are significantly higher than those offered in both Germany and China. Such clean energy investments shift Japan?s reliance on nuclear energy. Government subsidies benefit solar panel makers such as Panasonic, spurring them to manufacture even more energy-efficient products and services.

We also applaud the Singapore government for introducing the Energy Conservation Act, which comes into effect in 2013, to improve energy efficiency across different sectors. It will also drive energy efficiency in business. The legislation requires factories that consume more than 15GWh of energy a year to implement minimum energy management standards, such as the appointment of an energy manager, reporting of energy use and submission of energy efficiency improvement plans.

This is likely to help households make more informed choices about purchasing energy-efficient appliances since the legislation stipulates the minimum energy performance standards and energy labelling scheme for common household appliances such as air-conditioners and refrigerators.

Yorihisa Shiokawa is Managing Executive Officer, Regional Head for the Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa of Panasonic Corporation, as well as Managing Director of Panasonic Asia Pacific. He assumed his role from April 2011, after three decades of building the brand name Panasonic in markets such as Europe, notably its digital audio-visual product and home appliance businesses.

Facing tough road in Ohio, Romney and Ryan embark on bus tour

DAYTON, Ohio (Reuters) - Facing a tough path to victory if they cannot win Ohio, Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan launched a two-day bus tour on Tuesday to try to boost their fortunes in a state that polls show could be slipping away from them.

The Republican nominees for president and vice president appeared together for the first time in more than three weeks, part of what aides vow will be a more aggressive phase of campaigning after Romney spent much of the past two weeks raising money and holding few public rallies.

Romney emphasized his claims that Democratic President Barack Obama's policies are preventing the U.S. economy from a full recovery and that Obama has not been tough enough in pushing back against Chinese trade practices that have led to cheap goods flooding the U.S. market and killing American jobs.

Romney accused China of a wide variety of trade abuses, from holding down the value of its currency to keep its products cheap, to stealing U.S. intellectual property.

"We cannot compete with people that don't play fair, and I will not let that go on," Romney said.

SCRAMBLING IN OHIO

Romney's message on China has been a central part of his stump speech all year. Obama's campaign has responded with a television ad that accuses Romney of outsourcing jobs to China during his time as a private equity executive at Bain Capital.

Romney and his team hope the trade message will resonate in Ohio, a politically divided state that is key to his chances of winning the presidency - but where polls indicate Obama has opened up a lead.

Ohio's unemployment rate in July was 7.2 percent, better than the national level of 8.1 percent.

It is difficult to see how Romney could win the November 6 election without Ohio.

He has a narrower path than Obama to get the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, and most scenarios require him to win the Midwestern state where thousands of jobs were saved by the Obama-backed government bailout of the auto industry.

Romney aides dismissed surveys showing the Republican presidential ticket falling behind Obama in Ohio on a day in which a Washington Post poll showed the president with an 8-point lead over Romney, 52 to 44 percent.

Romney political director Rich Beeson told reporters on the candidate's plane that the campaign's internal polling showed a closer race in Ohio, within the survey's margin of error. He accused the Obama campaign of "spiking the ball at the 30-yard line," or declaring victory in the state long before the election.

"I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign on what the public polls say," Beeson said. "We don't. We have confidence in our data and our metrics."

'MORE AGGRESSIVE, ASSERTIVE'

Romney has suffered a series of stumbles in recent weeks that have knocked him off message and given the advantage to Obama.

Some Romney supporters hope their candidate will put that behind him with an aggressive campaign schedule in the 10 or so key states that will decide the outcome of the election.

"I would like him to be more aggressive, assertive in detailing his plans, making people vote for a future and not against an alternative future. I want him to focus more on what he's going to do," said Ken Warner, 50, a software engineer from South Dayton, Ohio.

Romney sought to generate some fresh energy by appearing with Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman and budget hawk who is popular among conservatives - many of whom have been disappointed that Ryan has not been a more prominent force in Romney's campaign.

In introducing Romney, Ryan pointed to Romney's experience in the business world and said Obama is trying to distract Americans' attention from the economy.

"This president cannot run on his record. This president is going to say anything and everything to try and blame, to try and duck, to try and distort, to try and divide, to try and distract," Ryan said. "You know what, Ohio? We're not going to let him."

Joining Romney and Ryan on stage were two Republican senators, Rob Portman of Ohio and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Paul is the son of Ron Paul, a Texas congressman who ran against Romney for the Republican presidential nomination and has declined to endorse Romney.

Portman was on Romney's short list to be the vice presidential running mate. Now he is playing the role of Obama in mock debate sessions that Romney has been conducting to prepare for three presidential debates that may prove decisive in the election. The first one is on October 3 in Denver.

Romney quipped that Portman is playing the role of Obama well.

"I want to kick him out of the room, he's so good," Romney said to laughter.

Mobile Friendly Websites - Business 2 Community

Today, web content is increasingly being accessed via hand held devices. As such, businesses that are looking to capitalise online should look to offer users a mobile friendly website that is fully optimised for mobile usage.

  • Smartphone penetration reached 45% in the UK
  • Tablet usage increased as a percentage of total population to 10% in the UK
  • The average user spends 24mins 49 seconds a day surfing the internet from mobile

Source

With point and click being replaced by touching and swiping on many advices, you can take advantage of the various ways that mobile users interact with your content, but you must first ensure that all potential areas of frustration are removed or else the user will simply leave your site and log on to your competition.

Top Tips for Making Your Website Mobile Friendly

Look at the statistics.

It may be the case that your target audience is more senior. Statistics suggest that the number of mobile users over the age of 65 is still quite low, therefore any mobile optimisation strategy that you undertake for that demographic may have little impact. On the other hand, if your target audience is in the age bracket 16-24 then creating mobile friendly websites could result in a great return.

You can determine the level of demand and identify the type of phone penetration, e.g. Blackberry, Symbian, Android or iPhone, by examining your website statistics. Focus on developing your website for the platform that has the largest reach first.

Consider users using tablet devices

People using tablet devices are more than likely to be in an environment that will give them more time to browse, digest and interact with your content than mobile users. They will happily view videos and wider content than a rushed mobile user who requires a trimmed down version. That being said, the user experience for the tablet user should still be simple, touch-friendly and easy to navigate.

Check how your website appears and functions on your own phone

If you navigate to your own website on your mobile phone, what does it look like? Is the experience good, can you easily navigate between pages and click on buttons? Is your contact information clearly visible? Can you click to call your phone number? All of these things when included on a mobile optimised site can drastically improve the effectiveness of your website on mobile browsers.

You could also check out how your phone works on other devices by testing it on a number of online emulators that give the experience a user would experience on different mobile devices.

Strip away the fat.

Mobile is lean, you want to strip away any unnecessary graphics and content and consider how to make the site easier to view and navigate.

Check how your mobile phone looks across multiple browsers.

Just like traditional internet where people may choose to browse via Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Firefox, there are many different mobile browsers that people can use depending either on the device they have or personal preference. You can check on how your website looks in different browsers by using a tool such as browsershots.

Avoid extensive use of Flash.

The name of the game with mobile is simplicity. By avoiding any excessive use of flash you will minimise the risk of delaying page response or displaying error messages.

An increasingly relevant part of digital enterprise today is mobile. Furthermore, as Smartphone ownership and usage continues to rise, so will the demand for mobile friendly websites. Take the time to consider how your business is being affected by the ever growing trend.

Smart entrepreneurs and business owners know that mobile usage is an opportunity to be exploited and embraced in order to grow and enhance the way paying customers can interact with them.

Are you taking full advantage of the mobile opportunity?
